Plug your Christmas lights into a remote-controlled outlet, then plug that receiver into the wall. Press the handheld remote to switch power on or off. For lights outdoors, use an outdoor-rated controller connected to a GFCI-protected receptacle. If you want schedules or phone control, choose an outdoor smart plug instead.
What the remote controls
Most remote outlets do not communicate with the light string itself. They switch power to it:
Wall outlet → remote-controlled receiver → Christmas lights
That distinction matters: the lights must turn on when power is supplied. A receiver cannot press a button on the lights’ own controller.

Choose the right control

For basic switching, an RF remote outlet is usually the simplest choice. A smart plug is more useful if you want a recurring schedule, sunset automation, or control while away. A photocell switches according to ambient light, while a mechanical timer follows set times.
Set up a handheld remote outlet
- Plug the lights directly into a working outlet. Turn them on, choose the mode you want, and leave their own switch on.
- Unplug the lights. Plug the receiver into the wall—an indoor-rated receiver indoors, or a product explicitly rated for outdoor use outdoors.
- Plug the lights into the receiver and install the remote’s battery if needed.
- If required, pair the remote with the receiver. Follow that model’s instructions; some arrive paired, while others use a learn or program button and a remote channel.
- Press On, then Off, and confirm the lights respond both ways. Test from where you expect to use the remote.
Walls, metal objects, distance, and radio interference can reduce RF range. If the receiver has a manual button, test it as a fallback. For multiple sets, check whether the product’s outlets have separate channels: several outlets may switch together rather than independently. For example, Stanley advertises a three-outlet remote hub, while some outdoor smart plugs offer two independently controlled outlets. Check the exact product’s instructions and ratings before buying.
Set up an outdoor smart plug
Smart-plug menus differ by product, app version, firmware, and region, but the general process is:

- Install the manufacturer’s app and sign in or create the required account.
- Plug the outdoor smart plug into a suitable outlet and put it into setup mode as directed.
- Connect it to the supported home Wi-Fi network. Many models require 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi; verify this for your specific plug.
- Name the outlet, such as “Tree Lights” or “Front Yard Lights,” then plug in the lights.
- Switch the outlet on in the app. Test the app and the plug’s physical button.
- Set a schedule, countdown, sunset routine, or supported voice command if desired.
Do not use an indoor smart plug outside. Product families may include both indoor and outdoor models, and the outdoor rating belongs to a specific model, not the entire brand. For model-specific examples, TP-Link lists an IP65-rated Tapo TP25 with two independently controlled outlets and Matter support, and an IP64-rated Kasa EP40A with a stated 15 A/1,875 W maximum. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not ratings that apply to other plugs. Check the current model’s instructions, load rating, and ecosystem compatibility before purchase. TP-Link also warns against setups that could overload a smart plug, including unsuitable power-strip or extension-cord arrangements.
Matter compatibility can help a plug work within supported smart-home ecosystems, but it does not guarantee every controller or feature will behave identically. Some systems, such as Lutron Caséta, can pair an outdoor plug with Pico remotes and use a hub for app scheduling. Confirm what is included: the plug, remote, and hub may be separate components.
Test your lights before relying on a schedule
Check whether the string remembers its mode and turns on after power is interrupted:

- Turn the lights on normally and select the pattern you want.
- Unplug them for 10–30 seconds.
- Plug them back in without pressing any button on the string or its controller.
If they do not light automatically, a remote outlet or schedule may not work as intended. Some strings have an inline switch, electronic controller, transformer, or mode button that needs manual activation after power returns. Others lose the chosen pattern when power is cut. Test several power cycles before relying on unattended operation, and do not tape down, bypass, or modify a controller.

Pick a schedule that suits the lights
- Countdown: Switch on now and have the plug turn off after a chosen number of hours.
- Daily schedule: Switch on and off at fixed clock times.
- Sunset or sunrise routine: Adjusts timing with seasonal daylight, if supported by the plug and app.
- Photocell: Uses ambient light to switch automatically; placement affects what it detects.
- Away mode: Varies switching times to simulate occupancy, where available.
After a power outage, both the plug and the light string may behave differently depending on their settings. Test what happens when power returns before depending on a schedule.
Outdoor safety checklist
- Use an outdoor-rated receiver or smart plug, outdoor-rated extension cord where needed, and a GFCI-protected receptacle.
- Keep plug connections off the ground and away from puddles, snow, irrigation, and roof runoff. Weather resistance of the plug enclosure does not make every exposed cord connection waterproof.
- Follow the product instructions for receptacle covers and connection protection. Never defeat a ground pin, and never use an indoor extension cord outdoors.
- Check the total load against the controller’s maximum amperage and wattage. Add the loads from the lights and decorations, and check whether the rating applies across all outlets. Do not assume that a stated 15-amp rating permits unlimited lights, or add a power strip unless the manufacturer allows that arrangement and the total load remains within limits.
- Use only light strings and cords in good condition. The CPSC identifies inadequate wire size, strain relief, or overcurrent protection as hazards in seasonal lighting products; its extension-cord guidance also covers outdoor cord characteristics and UL 817 context.
Outdoor ratings are specific to products. For example, IP65 or IP64 describes resistance under defined test conditions; it does not certify an entire installation against every kind of weather or water exposure.

Check recalls and batteries
Do not assume a decorative wireless controller is safe just because it is sold for holiday lights. In December 2024, the CPSC announced a recall of about 44,600 Mr. Christmas and Wondershop wireless decorative tree-light controllers after overheating reports, including one reported fire. Check the CPSC recall notice for affected products and model details before using an older controller.
If a remote uses a coin or button battery, keep it away from children and follow the battery-compartment instructions. The CPSC’s holiday-lighting safety meeting log discusses products and accessories containing these batteries.

The remote does nothing
Check the battery’s charge and orientation, confirm the receiver has power, and try its manual button. If the model requires pairing, repeat its pairing procedure and check that the remote is set to the correct channel. Retry close to the receiver, then test at your normal operating distance; walls and metal can affect range.

The plug’s button works, but the app does not
Check that the plug has power and is connected to the required Wi-Fi band, often 2.4 GHz. Confirm the app is signed into the right account and the plug still appears online. Consult the product’s status-light instructions rather than assuming one indicator pattern applies to all models.
The lights turn on but will not turn off, or return in a different pattern
Confirm the lights are plugged through the receiver, not around it, and that the correct outlet or channel is selected. The light string may have its own controller or may not remember its mode after a power cycle. If the plug itself does not switch reliably, stop using it and contact the manufacturer.
The outdoor plug trips the GFCI
Treat repeated trips as a fault, not an inconvenience. Water intrusion, damaged insulation, a faulty decoration, or an overloaded circuit can be involved. Disconnect the decorations and stop using any component associated with a recurring trip. Do not bypass the GFCI.

Disconnect it if you can do so safely and stop using it. Do not continue testing a controller or cord that appears damaged or overheated.
Which option should you use?
Choose an indoor RF outlet for a tree or indoor décor when you just want a handheld on/off button. For yard lights, choose an outdoor-rated RF receiver if you want simple switching without Wi-Fi, or an outdoor smart plug if app control and schedules matter. If you only want lights to follow daylight, consider a photocell or a smart plug with a supported sunset routine. Whatever you choose, verify outdoor suitability and load capacity, then test that your lights turn on after power is restored.
