Build a desk lamp you can control from a phone or browser with an ESP32, a short 5 V addressable LED strip, and WLED. The ESP32 handles the Wi-Fi and data signal; a separate, correctly sized power supply runs the LEDs. Add a diffuser and stable enclosure to turn the electronics into a usable lamp.
What you’re building
This project uses addressable LEDs: individual pixels can display colors and animated effects. WLED supplies a local web interface, presets, timers, and other lighting controls for compatible ESP32 boards and LED types. See the WLED getting-started guide and WLED project.
For a small lamp, use a 5 V WS2812B strip for colored ambient effects, or a 5 V SK6812 RGBW strip if useful white illumination matters. RGBW strips add a dedicated white channel; RGB strips make white by mixing red, green, and blue. Neither makes an exposed strip comfortable to look at: put the LEDs behind a diffuser.
Choose addressable, not ordinary analog RGB
Addressable strips commonly have three connections: power, ground, and data. A four-pin analog RGB strip usually has shared power and separate red, green, and blue channels; its LEDs change together and it needs MOSFET driver circuitry. It cannot be wired to one ESP32 data pin as though it were a WS2812B strip. WLED’s addressable-LED workflow supports compatible addressable RGB and RGBW products, not ordinary non-addressable strips; see Espressif’s WLED overview.

Parts and tools
Required for the basic build
- An ESP32 development board, such as an ESP32-DevKitC or comparable supported board.
- A short, 5 V addressable WS2812B or SK6812 strip. Around 30–60 pixels is a practical starting range for a compact lamp.
- A regulated 5 V power supply sized for the strip’s current draw.
- USB cable for flashing and initial setup.
- Wire, soldered connections or suitable terminals, heat-shrink tubing, and a physical enclosure with strain relief.
- A frosted acrylic, polycarbonate, silicone, or translucent printed diffuser and a stable base.
Recommended protection and reliability parts
- An inline fuse close to the power source, rated for the wiring and expected load.
- A 74AHCT125 or 74HCT245 level shifter if the data connection is long, noisy, or unreliable.
- A 220–470 Ω data-line resistor and a 500–1,000 µF electrolytic capacitor across LED 5 V and ground are optional additions often used to help protect or stabilize the circuit.
- Wire and connectors suitable for the expected current, plus a service opening that keeps USB access available.
The ESP32 uses a 3.3 V operating domain. Espressif recommends an external supply capable of at least 500 mA for the ESP32 itself; that is separate from the LED supply requirement. Do not feed 5 V into the ESP32’s 3.3 V pin. Check the exact board’s power-input markings and documentation before sharing the 5 V supply with its VIN or 5V input. Sources: ESP32 datasheet and ESP32 hardware-design guidelines.
Size the LED power supply
Do not size the supply by guesswork or expect the ESP32 board to carry strip current. As a conservative planning estimate for WS2812B designs, budget about 60 mA per pixel at full-brightness white. This is not a guaranteed draw for every strip: actual current depends on the LED type, construction, color, efficiency, and firmware brightness limit.
Required current ≈ pixel count × 0.06 A. Choose a regulated supply with additional capacity rather than running it continuously at its limit. At 5 V, the following estimates use that 60 mA-per-pixel planning assumption:

| Pixels | Estimated current | Approximate power at 5 V |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | 1.8 A | 9 W |
| 60 | 3.6 A | 18 W |
| 100 | 6 A | 30 W |
| 150 | 9 A | 45 W |
For 60 pixels, a regulated 5 V, 5 A supply provides useful headroom under this estimate. You can use a lower-rated supply only with a suitable brightness limit and a load kept within the supply’s rating. WLED recommends powering the strip directly from the supply and connecting the controller in parallel; it advises considering power injection as installations grow, with direct strip power for roughly 30–300 RGB LEDs and power injection worth considering above roughly 150. Those ranges are guidance, not a substitute for checking voltage drop and wiring. See WLED’s wiring pro tips.
- Use a certified, protected low-voltage supply, an inline fuse, and wire sized for the current.
- Keep the LED run short for a desk lamp; 5 V systems carry more current than higher-voltage systems for the same power and can be more sensitive to voltage drop.
- Keep exposed mains wiring out of a hobby enclosure. Do not put the power supply against heat-sensitive printed plastic or fabric.
Plan the lamp body and diffuser
Mount the strip so the LEDs shine into or through a diffuser instead of directly into your eyes. More distance between the pixels and diffuser generally blends hotspots more effectively. A reflective inner surface can help direct light, while a wide, stable base keeps the lamp from tipping.
- Provide ventilation around power electronics and the ESP32; do not permanently seal heat-producing parts in hot glue.
- Keep the ESP32 antenna clear of metal shielding and dense wiring where practical.
- Route power and data separately where convenient, secure wires, and add strain relief so moving the lamp cannot pull apart solder joints.
- Leave a service opening for USB access and firmware recovery; use connectors if you expect to replace the strip.
For decorative color, a modest RGB strip and strong diffuser can work well. For desk work, choose RGBW or add a separate neutral-white light source; colored RGB effects and useful task illumination are different goals.

Wire the ESP32, supply, and strip
Use a parallel power arrangement: the supply feeds the strip directly and, only if appropriate for the board, its 5 V/VIN input. The ESP32’s data output connects to the strip’s data input. All grounds must be common.

ESP32 GPIO16 ─ optional level shifter/resistor ─ LED strip DIN
- Check the strip’s voltage markings and identify its data-in end. Follow the printed arrows; connect to DIN, not DOUT.
- Connect supply positive to strip 5 V and supply ground to strip ground.
- Connect ESP32 ground to that same ground. Without this shared reference, the data signal may not work reliably.
- Connect the ESP32 data pin to strip DIN. GPIO16 is WLED’s documented basic ESP32 recommendation, not a universal choice for every board. WLED also lists GPIO4, GPIO13, and GPIO16–33 as usable options; board pin labels and constraints vary, so check your specific pinout. See WLED getting started.
- Add a level shifter if the data wire is long, electrically noisy, or unreliable. Keep the data run short where possible.
- Check every connection and polarity before applying power. Do not route substantial LED current through the ESP32 board’s USB connector.
Install WLED and join it to Wi-Fi
WLED avoids writing a complete lighting-control program for a standard Wi-Fi lamp. Its web installer and setup details can change, so consult the live WLED guide if a screen, credential, or address differs.
- Connect the ESP32 to a computer over USB.
- Open the WLED web installer in a supported desktop version of Chrome or Edge and flash the firmware. Espressif’s WLED overview describes this route as requiring no local build environment.
- Reboot the board and look for the temporary Wi-Fi network named
WLED-AP. Join it using the default password shown in current WLED setup documentation. - During access-point setup, open the device setup page at
4.3.2.1if directed by the current WLED instructions. - Enter your home Wi-Fi credentials and save. After the controller joins the network, use its local address or WLED interface to configure the LEDs.
Installer browser support, setup steps, and access-point details are operational information that may change between releases; follow the current WLED documentation rather than relying on an old tutorial’s screenshots.

Configure and test the LEDs
In WLED’s LED configuration, match the settings to the actual strip and wiring. Menu names can vary by release, but these are the decisions to make:
- LED type: WS2812B, SK6812, or the strip’s actual chipset.
- Pixel count: Enter the number of individually addressable pixels, not the strip’s length in meters.
- Data pin: Set the GPIO physically wired to DIN; GPIO16 is the documented basic ESP32 example.
- Color order: GRB is common for WS2812B, but verify your strip. If colors are wrong, change the setting rather than rewiring.
- RGB or RGBW: Choose the correct mode for the strip’s channels.
- Brightness and current limit: Set a conservative maximum suitable for your supply and wiring.
- Lighting behavior: Save a restrained desk-light preset and, if useful, configure a startup preset, timer, or schedule.
Before fitting the enclosure, test at low brightness: red, green, blue, then white. Confirm each color looks correct and the full strip responds. Increase brightness only after checking for flicker, resets, hot wires, brownouts, or visible color changes caused by voltage drop.
Troubleshoot common faults
| Symptom | Likely causes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No LEDs light | No LED power; reversed connection; wrong data end; missing common ground; incorrect chipset or GPIO. | Verify supply voltage and polarity, connect to DIN, share ground, and check WLED’s LED type and pin settings. |
| Only the first pixel lights | Wrong strip direction, bad data connection, damaged first pixel, wrong configuration, long/noisy data run. | Follow the arrows, inspect DIN wiring, confirm chipset and color settings, and try a shorter data lead or level shifter. |
| Flicker, dimming, or ESP32 resets | Undersized supply, voltage drop, weak ground, thin wire, long data line, electrical noise, or unstable ESP32 supply. | Lower the brightness limit, improve wiring and ground, power the strip directly, use a suitably rated supply, and consider power injection or a level shifter where appropriate. |
| Colors are swapped or incorrect | Strip color order differs from the configured order. | Change the color-order setting and test red, green, and blue again. |
| White looks unsuitable for reading | RGB strip is mixing colored channels to produce white. | Use an RGBW strip with a dedicated white channel or add a neutral-white light source. |
| Wi-Fi setup does not appear | Board is not booted, setup process differs, board is stuck, or radio performance is poor. | Confirm power, move it away from metal, follow the board’s reset/boot instructions, and consult current WLED setup guidance before reflashing. |
Low-voltage wiring can still be a fire hazard when it carries high current. WLED’s wiring guidance discusses current, voltage drop, and power distribution; inspect connectors and wires during first tests and stop if anything becomes unusually hot.

Optional controls and firmware paths
Add physical controls
After the browser-controlled version works, add a pushbutton for on/off or preset cycling, a rotary encoder for brightness, or a sensor for presence or ambient light. A microphone can enable sound-reactive effects. Check WLED’s current documentation for supported button and timer configuration and the wiring appropriate to your board and sensor.
Connect smart-home automation
WLED supports local web and mobile control, presets, playlists, scheduling, and smart-home integration. Local control can operate on the local network; integrations or remote access may involve additional services. Espressif describes WLED and its capabilities in its overview. Home Assistant users can also consider ESPHome, but its LED component configuration should be checked against current ESPHome documentation before choosing that route.
When custom firmware makes sense
Use Arduino with FastLED or Adafruit NeoPixel if the aim is to learn embedded programming or implement specialized sensor behavior rather than quickly obtain a configurable Wi-Fi lamp. For most first builds, WLED is the simpler starting point. A prebuilt WLED controller can also reduce wiring work by integrating terminals or signal conditioning, at the expense of flexibility and the hands-on learning of a bare ESP32.
Make it comfortable and safe to use
- Set a brightness ceiling and save a low, steady preset for ordinary use; avoid strobe or rapid flashing for routine desk lighting.
- Use a physical switch if you want to shut the lamp off without opening the web interface.
- Secure the enclosure, protect solder joints from movement, and keep the diffuser from touching hot components.
- Use a fuse near the source, prevent shorts, and inspect the supply, wiring, and connectors after initial operation.
- Keep mains-voltage wiring outside the hobby-built enclosure unless you understand and follow applicable electrical-safety requirements.
WLED includes a photosensitivity warning; exercise caution with strobe, rapid effects, and high-speed lighting. See the WLED project.
