You can build a useful adjustable 1.2–24 V DC supply at home, but the range is only achievable when the input voltage and regulator are chosen to match it. For the safest practical build, use a certified, enclosed DC adapter with an adjustable buck or buck-boost module; avoid building the mains-voltage section yourself. A simple LM317 linear supply is a good learning project, but it needs input-voltage headroom and careful heat management.

What this project does—and what it does not

This is a positive-polarity, adjustable DC supply for low-voltage electronics. The stated 1.2–24 V range is nominal: actual output and usable current depend on the input source, converter or regulator, load, wiring, and cooling. A voltage knob alone does not make a precision laboratory supply, nor does it necessarily provide adjustable current limiting.

These protection terms mean different things:

  • Constant voltage (CV): the supply attempts to hold the selected voltage as the load changes, within its operating limits.
  • Constant current (CC): the supply limits current to a selected value, reducing output voltage as needed.
  • Current limiting: a circuit restricts current when the load demands too much. It may be adjustable, fixed, or fold back rather than hold a steady current.
  • Short-circuit protection: a response to a short; it may shut down, limit current, or rely on a fuse. Do not assume it is present or suitable without checking the device documentation.
  • Overtemperature protection: a regulator may shut down when too hot, but this is not a substitute for designing adequate cooling.

The LM317 includes protective features documented by its manufacturers, but a basic voltage-regulator circuit is not automatically a complete adjustable CC/CV bench supply. See the Texas Instruments LM317 documentation and STMicroelectronics LM317 documentation.

Choose the supply design

Design Best suited to Main limitation
LM317 linear regulator Learning basic regulation; applications where simplicity and low noise matter more than efficiency Needs input headroom and can turn a large voltage drop into substantial heat
Buck converter Efficiently reducing a higher DC input Cannot boost voltage; a 24 V input does not guarantee regulated 24 V output
Buck-boost converter Maintaining an output range that crosses above and below the input voltage More complex; current, thermal, and voltage limits still depend on the actual module
Commercial bench supply Repeatable work needing specified adjustment, current limiting, and instrumentation Not a DIY learning project

Recommended beginner path: an external DC adapter and converter module

Use a certified, enclosed, isolated DC adapter as the source, then build only the low-voltage side: fuse, switch, adjustable converter, meter, and output terminals in an enclosure. A buck module is appropriate if the adapter voltage is comfortably above the desired output. For a full 1.2–24 V range from a lower-voltage source, use a buck-boost module rated for the required input, output, and current.

Check the module’s actual documentation for its input range, maximum output, continuous-current and peak-current ratings, current-limit behavior, cooling requirements, polarity protection, and short-circuit response. A seller’s headline current rating is not proof that the module can deliver that current continuously in an enclosed build. Switching converters can also introduce ripple and noise, and inexpensive displays may not be accurate.

Educational alternative: an LM317 linear supply

The LM317 is an adjustable positive linear regulator. Manufacturers specify an adjustable range starting around 1.2/1.25 V and extending above 24 V, with current capability greater than 1.5 A under appropriate conditions. Those IC specifications are not a guaranteed rating for a finished homemade supply: input voltage, thermal dissipation, heatsinking, source capacity, wiring, and protection set the practical limit. Consult the TI product documentation or ST product documentation for the specific device and application requirements.

Plan the input voltage and output range

For a linear regulator

The regulator must receive more voltage than the output it is expected to hold:

Vin(min) > Vout(max) + regulator headroom + ripple margin

For a nominal 24 V output, the voltage at the LM317 input must remain above 24 V by the amount of headroom required by the regulator under load. If it falls too low, regulation is lost and the output sags. The required margin depends on the specific circuit and conditions, so do not treat 24 V at the adapter label as sufficient input for a guaranteed 24 V output.

Additionally, you can adjust the brightness of the screen according to your needs.
  • USB Fast Charging Port: The variable power supply is configured with an 18W fast charging port. No more mplaining about mobile phones or repaired devices not being charged in time. The NANKADF dc power supply allows you to avoid this dilemma. It charges your devices quickly anytime, anywhere.

For a buck converter

A buck converter steps voltage down: Vout < Vin. Its usable maximum output is below the input by a margin determined by the converter’s dropout, duty-cycle limit, load, and design. To obtain a regulated output near 24 V, use a suitable input above 24 V or choose a buck-boost design rated for the job.

If considering a transformer supply

After a bridge rectifier and filter capacitor, an unloaded DC voltage is roughly VAC RMS × 1.414, minus bridge-diode losses. Under load it is affected by transformer regulation, ripple, current, and winding resistance. A nominal 24 VAC transformer can therefore produce a substantially higher DC voltage when unloaded; that may exceed regulator input-differential or capacitor ratings. Because this approach involves mains wiring as well as potentially hazardous stored charge, it is not the recommended beginner build.

Build the LM317 voltage-setting stage

The conventional setting equation is:

Vout ≈ Vref × (1 + R2/R1) + Iadj × R2

For an illustrative calculation, use R1 = 240 Ω and Vref ≈ 1.25 V. Ignoring the small adjustment-pin current:

R2 ≈ R1 × (Vout / 1.25 − 1)

For approximately 24 V, this gives R2 ≈ 240 × (24 / 1.25 − 1) ≈ 4.37 kΩ. A circuit might use a 240 Ω resistor from output to adjustment and a 4.7 kΩ potentiometer from adjustment to ground. The resulting range is approximate, not a precision guarantee; regulator reference variation, adjustment current, resistor tolerance, load, input voltage, and wiring all affect it. Check the pinout and recommended circuit for the exact regulator package and manufacturer before wiring.

Follow the regulator datasheet for input and output capacitors and protection components. Their appropriate values depend on the circuit, source, wiring, and load; there is no universal set that suits every build. Observe electrolytic-capacitor polarity. Use any recommended reverse-protection diodes, including adjustment-pin protection when a large adjustment capacitor is fitted. Keep regulator and output return wiring short and deliberate.

Design for heat and current

Estimate linear-regulator heating

For an LM317 linear stage, a first estimate is:

Pheat ≈ (Vin − Vout) × Iout

With 30 V at the regulator input, 5 V output, and 1 A load, that is approximately (30 − 5) × 1 = 25 W of heat. That is a major heatsinking problem for a TO-220 regulator. At 30 V input, 24 V output, and 1 A, the estimate is 6 W; that can still require substantial cooling. These calculations are not thermal validation: package, heatsink, airflow, mounting, and ambient temperature matter. Use an appropriate heatsink and thermal interface, check whether the tab needs electrical insulation, provide ventilation, and verify temperature under the worst intended continuous load. A regulator’s headline current rating does not apply at every input/output combination.

If the calculated heat is too high, reduce the input voltage or current, use a suitable pre-regulator, or choose a switching converter. A buck converter is generally much more efficient than a linear regulator when dropping a large voltage.

Establish what current protection you actually have

A simple LM317 constant-current arrangement uses approximately Ilimit ≈ 1.25 V / Rsense. For about 0.5 A, this implies Rsense ≈ 2.5 Ω; its dissipation at that current is about I²R = 0.625 W. Select a resistor with an adequate power margin and design the surrounding circuit for the intended conditions. This simplified relationship is not a complete design for every current range; higher-current circuits may need additional pass-device circuitry.

On a converter module, distinguish true constant-current regulation from a fixed overcurrent trip, foldback, peak-current figure, or an unqualified maximum-current claim. Test current behavior with an electronic load or appropriately rated power resistor. Do not use a short circuit as a routine test unless the module documentation explicitly permits it.

Gather parts for the low-voltage build

  • A certified, enclosed DC adapter whose voltage suits the chosen converter and whose power rating exceeds the intended output power with margin for losses and startup demand.
  • An adjustable buck or buck-boost module with documented input/output limits and the required continuous-current capability.
  • Input fuse and holder, placed close to the source, and a DC-rated switch.
  • Enclosure, DC input connector, insulated output terminals, suitable wire, and secure terminal blocks or connectors.
  • Panel voltmeter/ammeter if desired; verify its wiring instructions before connecting it.
  • Multimeter, and a controlled test load such as a suitable power resistor or electronic load.
  • Heatsink or fan if the selected module or regulator requires it.

For perspective, a 24 V, 1 A output is 24 W. The adapter must supply more than that to allow for converter losses, and its real capability must be suitable for continuous operation. Do not infer a finished supply’s rating from a converter board label alone.

Assemble and verify the supply

  1. Write down the specification. Set the minimum and maximum output voltage, maximum continuous current, need for adjustable current limiting, acceptable noise, and whether isolation is required. Sensitive analog or RF work may need different filtering and verification from LED or motor testing.
  2. Select the topology and source. Match the adapter voltage to the converter’s documented input range. Choose buck only when the required output stays below the usable input voltage; choose buck-boost when the range must cross above and below it.
  3. Check the actual component documentation. Confirm voltage and current limits, pinout, polarity, cooling, capacitor requirements, reverse-polarity protection, current-limit behavior, and short-circuit behavior. Do not rely only on a marketplace listing.
  4. Wire the low-voltage power path. A typical arrangement is adapter positive → input fuse → DC-rated switch → converter VIN+. Adapter negative connects to converter VIN−. Converter VOUT+ and VOUT− connect to the positive and negative output terminals, respectively. Use wire, connectors, and a fuse rated for the expected current.
  5. Wire the panel meter only from its manual. Meter modules differ: some need a separate supply, some route load current through a shunt, and some use separate sense leads. Connect the voltage-sense points and current path for the exact meter model; do not assume all three-wire or four-wire meters share a wiring scheme.
  6. Mount and insulate the assembly. Secure the module and any heatsink, prevent accidental contact with conductive parts, provide airflow, fit strain relief, and keep the input fuse close to the source. Enclose the low-voltage circuitry so loose wires or tools cannot bridge terminals.
  7. Set and check the output without a load. Power it from the adapter, measure with a multimeter, slowly adjust to the intended voltage, and confirm polarity. Turn power off before attaching a load if there is no output-enable switch.
  8. Test with a controlled load. Measure output voltage and current under load, observe adapter and module temperatures, and check whether the output remains stable. Test the current limit only with a controlled load and according to the module documentation. If an oscilloscope is available, inspect ripple at the output.
  9. Label the finished unit. Mark input voltage, output range, maximum continuous current, polarity, fuse rating, and that the output is DC. Do not label it for battery charging unless the design specifically supports the battery chemistry and charging requirements.

Keep mains construction out of a beginner build

The recommended arrangement is wall outlet → certified enclosed AC/DC adapter → low-voltage supply circuit. It avoids exposing the builder to mains wiring while retaining the hands-on regulator project. Do not casually install exposed mains terminals or an open-frame mains board in a homemade enclosure.

A transformer-based mains design is an advanced electrical construction project. It requires suitable fusing, protective earthing and bonding where applicable, covered live parts, rated switches and wiring, enclosure design, strain relief, insulation spacing, and safe capacitor discharge practices. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and installation. OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.305 covers workplace electrical wiring methods, but it is not a substitute for local electrical code or qualified inspection.

  • Use an isolated certified adapter when possible; never leave live mains parts exposed.
  • Fit an enclosure, secure cable strain relief, and use appropriately rated connectors, wires, switches, capacitors, and fuses.
  • Observe polarity, secure hot components, keep ventilation openings clear, and discharge large capacitors before handling.
  • Verify output voltage and polarity with a multimeter before connecting valuable electronics; consider an output fuse for the load.
  • Never connect a homemade supply directly to a lithium battery unless the design includes charging and protection suitable for that battery.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The output will not reach 24 V

Check whether the source is high enough for the topology. A buck converter cannot boost, and an LM317 needs input headroom. Also check for adapter sag under load, converter duty-cycle limits, current limiting, and voltage drop in wiring.

The output falls when a load is connected

Possible causes include the adapter reaching its current limit, the converter limiting current, undersized wires, a poor solder joint, input-voltage sag, or thermal protection. Measure input and output voltage while the controlled load is connected to identify where the drop begins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The linear regulator gets very hot

Recalculate (Vin − Vout) × Iout. Reduce the voltage drop or load, improve heatsinking and airflow, use an appropriate pre-regulator, or replace the linear stage with a switching design if its noise is acceptable.

  • Wide Applications: The adjustable dc power supply features an intelligent temperature-controlled fan and heat sink for excellent heat dissipation and is especially suitable for laboratory, electronic repair DIY, communication equipment maintenance, products line, scientific research and teaching units

The output rises unexpectedly

A failed potentiometer, damaged feedback path, converter fault, or incorrectly placed sense connection can produce excessive voltage. Stop before connecting sensitive equipment; verify the output with a multimeter and inspect the feedback wiring and module documentation.

The panel meter reading is wrong

Check whether the meter needs a separate supply, whether its shunt is in the correct current path, and whether voltage sense is connected on the correct side of the shunt. Ground arrangement, wiring voltage drop, and meter calibration can also affect readings.

The output has excessive ripple or switching noise

Potential causes include the converter design, filtering, long leads, pulsed loads, or layout. Shorten and twist output wiring where useful, and use filtering appropriate to the module. A multimeter will not show the full ripple waveform; use an oscilloscope if ripple matters to the application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A connected device is damaged

Likely causes include incorrect polarity, an output set too high, a converter failure, absent or misadjusted current limiting, incorrect meter wiring, or load startup current beyond the supply’s capability. Verify settings and protection with a controlled load before reconnecting valuable equipment.

When a ready-made supply is a better choice

Build the low-voltage version when learning and customization are the goal. If you need repeatable measurements, dependable adjustable current limiting, documented accuracy, or multiple outputs, a commercial bench supply is a better fit. For example, the Siglent North America power-supplies page lists commercial instruments; compare the specific model’s specifications to your needs rather than treating a product-family page as a guarantee for every unit.
