Seeed introduced two 60GHz mmWave sensor kits in October 2024: the MR60FDA2 for fall and presence detection, and the MR60BHA2 for breathing, heartbeat and presence detection. Both use an XIAO ESP32C6 with pre-flashed ESPHome firmware, so they can expose sensor data to Home Assistant over Wi-Fi. They are DIY smart-home devices for supplemental monitoring—not certified medical alerts or proven emergency-response systems.
What Seeed added
The range consists of two complete kits, not just bare radar modules. They share a controller platform and Home Assistant route, but use different radar algorithms and are intended for different jobs. Seeed announced them in October 2024; its announcement describes the kits and their ESPHome-based integration (Seeed’s announcement).
| Kit | Primary detection | Listed motion / presence range | Listed angle | Controller and integration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MR60FDA2 | Fall and human presence | Up to 6m motion; up to 3m presence | 120° × 100° | XIAO ESP32C6; pre-flashed ESPHome over Wi-Fi |
| MR60BHA2 | Breathing, heartbeat and human presence | Up to 6m motion; up to 1.5m presence | 120° × 100° | XIAO ESP32C6; pre-flashed ESPHome over Wi-Fi |
Seeed lists both at 5V. The range and angle figures are product specifications, not guarantees that a particular room layout or fall-monitoring position will work; placement guidance for each task is more important than the headline maximum.
What each sensor can—and cannot—tell you
MR60FDA2: fall classification and presence
A presence sensor can report that a person appears to be in an area; fall detection attempts to classify a particular movement pattern as a fall. The MR60FDA2 is intended to provide fall and presence states for smart-home automations. Seeed does not publish independent sensitivity, specificity or false-alarm rates in the cited product materials, so the fall state should not be treated as a guarantee that every fall will be detected. Seeed’s product description is at the MR60FDA2 product page.

MR60BHA2: sleep-oriented breathing and heartbeat readings
The MR60BHA2 is intended to detect presence and estimate breathing and heartbeat, particularly during sleep. Seeed warns that respiratory and heart-rate readings may be significantly inaccurate when a person is seated at a desk or exercising. A value displayed in Home Assistant is sensor output, not a clinically validated measurement. Seeed’s guidance is on the MR60BHA2 setup and installation page; product details are on the MR60BHA2 product page.
Why radar rather than a camera?
60GHz radar senses movement and small chest displacements without producing an image, offering more visual privacy than camera monitoring. It can also detect subtle or stationary presence that a basic PIR motion sensor may miss. It does not see through every obstacle reliably, and reflections, mounting, distance and movement in the room can affect results.

How Home Assistant integration works
“Home Assistant-ready” here means ESPHome firmware on the XIAO ESP32C6, not a native Matter device. Once provisioned onto Wi-Fi on the same local network as Home Assistant, the sensor can be discovered through the ESPHome integration. The pre-flashed firmware reduces setup work, but users still need Home Assistant, ESPHome support, Wi-Fi provisioning and automations configured for their own needs.

Firmware has two layers
ESPHome firmware on the XIAO can be customized and updated over the air. The radar module runs separate firmware; changing ESPHome YAML does not change the radar’s detection algorithm. Seeed says radar firmware updates require USB access inside the case and specialized Seeed software, so do not treat them like ordinary ESPHome updates (Seeed’s MR60FDA2 integration guide).
Installation determines whether the specialized functions are useful
For MR60FDA2 fall detection
Seeed recommends top-mounted installation, with guidance ranging from approximately 2.2–3.0m to a more specific 2.4–3.0m threshold in its materials. For the described fall-detection arrangement, the sensing radius is about 2m and the target fall zone is roughly 0–0.6m above the floor. These are installation recommendations, not universal performance guarantees (Seeed’s mmWave overview and MR60FDA2 installation guidance).
Rank #4
- Mount it with a clear view of the intended area; furniture can block or complicate the sensing zone.
- Keep the monitored zone within the specified mounting geometry rather than assuming the listed 6m motion range applies to fall classification.
- Consider edge cases such as a fall behind furniture, a slow slide or a person remaining in an unusual posture; these may not match the algorithm’s expected pattern and are not established error rates.
For MR60BHA2 sleep monitoring
Seeed recommends mounting about 1m above the head of the bed, tilted downward approximately 45° toward the middle of the bed, with the chest within about 1.5m and aligned with the radar’s normal direction (Seeed’s MR60BHA2 installation instructions). Movement, talking, sitting up, multiple people, excessive distance, poor alignment or obstructions can undermine readings. This is not a general-purpose vital-sign monitor for exercise, desk work or movement around the home.
Interference and room conditions
Seeed lists moving curtains or plants, water flow, metal or mirror reflections, vibration, nearby radars, glass or thin wooden barriers, and poor-quality power supplies as possible performance problems in its MR60FDA2 installation notes. Avoid treating a detection anomaly as proof of a fall or health event until the installation and surrounding conditions have been checked.

What is in the kits and what remains DIY
The kits combine a 60GHz radar module with an XIAO ESP32C6, pre-flashed ESPHome, Wi-Fi, light-level sensing, a customizable WS2812B RGB LED and Grove expansion for additional sensors or actuators. Seeed also provides a reference 3D-printable enclosure design. Its October 2024 announcement notes BLE, Zigbee and Thread capability at the XIAO ESP32C6 platform level; that does not mean those radios are configured or used by the default ESPHome/Home Assistant setup.
The hardware is compact and expandable, but it is closer to a developer kit than a polished, professionally monitored safety appliance. Users should expect to handle network setup, mounting, dashboard choices and notification reliability.
Which kit should you choose?
- Choose MR60FDA2 for experimental or supplemental fall-aware automations in a defined, top-mounted zone, where missed detection can be mitigated by another safety plan.
- Choose MR60BHA2 for sleep-oriented breathing and heartbeat experiments when you can meet the bed positioning requirements and understand that readings may be inaccurate.
- Choose a general presence sensor if you only need room occupancy or lighting triggers; the specialized fall and vital-sign functions may be unnecessary.
- Choose a professionally monitored medical-alert system when a missed event could create serious harm and dependable response is required.
For a lower-cost, general-presence DIY route, Seeed’s 24GHz Human Detection Sensor Kit uses an XIAO ESP32C3 and is listed with 5m motion and 4m presence ranges; it does not target the specialized fall, breathing or heartbeat jobs. See the 24GHz kit guide and MR24HPC1 module documentation for alternatives requiring more assembly or configuration.

What to check when a device or reading fails
It does not appear in Home Assistant
- Check USB power and confirm the device has joined the intended Wi-Fi network.
- Confirm Home Assistant and the sensor are on a network that permits local discovery and communication.
- Check that the ESPHome integration or add-on is installed and running, then restart the device and discovery.
- If provisioning is incomplete, reconnect to the device access point and revisit
192.168.4.1. - If firmware needs reflashing, Seeed’s browser workflow requires Chrome or Microsoft Edge; its guide warns that Firefox does not support that flashing path.
- Review ESPHome logs. Avoid changing radar firmware unless following Seeed’s exact procedure; recovery of a damaged radar module is distinct from an ESPHome OTA update.
Detection seems wrong
- For falls, check height, radius, obstructions, reflections, moving objects, vibration, water movement and nearby radar devices.
- For breathing or heartbeat, check distance and angle to the chest, subject movement, occupancy by more than one person and any intervening obstruction.
- Do not interpret a Home Assistant graph or notification as a validated medical finding.
Seeed’s materials do not establish clinical validation, diagnostic accuracy or published error rates for these use cases. The kits can support privacy-conscious local automation and supplementary observation, but they do not replace emergency response planning or medical-alert equipment.
