Yes, capacitor-related failures in the original Shelly 2.5 are repeatedly reported, but the public evidence does not establish that every unit has a design flaw or will fail. The strongest field evidence points to a 100 µF, 16 V electrolytic capacitor in the low-voltage power supply. Hissing, Wi-Fi dropouts, and reboots can fit that failure pattern, but they are not proof of it. Because the Shelly 2.5 is a mains-powered device, diagnosis and repair inside the unit are work for someone qualified to handle mains electronics.
What the Shelly 2.5 does—and why a failure matters in a building
The Shelly 2.5 is a compact, mains-powered, two-channel Wi-Fi relay with power measurement and roller-shutter or cover control. It is intended for installation behind a switch or in an electrical box, where a fault may be difficult to see or reach. The manufacturer’s documentation gives an ambient operating range of −20 °C to 40 °C and warns that the add-on interface can carry high voltage when the device is powered. For construction and maintenance teams, the practical concern is not just whether a relay still switches a load. An intermittent device hidden in a wall box can complicate fault-finding, access, and safe isolation. Treat unexpected noise or repeated dropouts as a reason to investigate rather than as proof that a particular component has failed.

What has actually been found inside failed units?
The most specific community investigation identified a 100 µF, 16 V electrolytic capacitor in the low-voltage supply as the recurring suspect. In three examined Shelly 2.5 units, the investigators reported that this capacitor had lost most of its capacitance: measurements ranged from a few hundred nanofarads to just under 20 µF. They reported that replacing it restored the units to operation. This is useful component-level evidence, but three user-investigated devices do not establish a population failure rate, a universal repair, or a manufacturer-confirmed root cause. The same investigation describes two 4.7 µF, 400 V capacitors in the supply section. Board revisions and component placement can differ, so a designator or component location mentioned online should not be assumed to apply to every unit. The investigation also discusses capacitor markings, including Chongx, but does not map all production batches or prove that all units used the same parts.
Does this prove a design flaw?
No—not in the broad sense implied by “killing capacitors.” The reports support a real, repeated capacitor-related field failure and make the low-voltage electrolytic the strongest reported failure candidate. They do not establish that all Shelly 2.5 units fail, how common the fault is, which serial numbers are affected, or whether a single design decision caused it.

- Plausible: reduced capacitance can impair filtering in a power supply and contribute to unstable operation. Heat, ripple current, component quality, and installation conditions are general factors that can affect electrolytic-capacitor life, but the available evidence does not isolate the cause in this product.
- Not established: a known universal defect, a complete bad-batch list, a published failure rate, or an official Shelly admission that the product has a design defect.
Shelly’s extended-service page includes the Shelly 2.5 in a program covering qualifying issues within three years of purchase, subject to its terms and regional conditions. Are the two 400 V capacitors the real problem?
One forum post proposes that the two 4.7 µF, 400 V parts could be stressed by voltage peaks on 230–240 V mains. That is a user hypothesis, not a validated engineering review. The three-unit investigation described above instead reported degraded 100 µF, 16 V capacitors. The available evidence therefore does not justify calling the 400 V parts under-rated or replacing them merely because they are present. High-voltage capacitor hypothesis.
How to check simpler causes before suspecting the power supply
Do not open an energized device or probe inside a wall box. Start with external checks and the manufacturer’s troubleshooting flow, which considers wiring, LED behavior, access-point mode, and device diagnostics rather than presuming a capacitor fault. Shelly device troubleshooting.

- Have a qualified person verify wiring, terminals, and the connected load against the product instructions.
- Check router status, Wi-Fi coverage at the installation location, and whether other devices on the same network are affected.
- Note the device’s LED behavior and whether it can be reached through its normal local or access-point functions, following Shelly’s guidance.
- Consider whether a motor, LED driver, or other load is within the device’s specified limits. Load type or switching stress may matter, but the available reports do not identify a particular load as the cause of the capacitor failures.
- Look for a pattern across devices, such as similar symptoms in units installed in a warm or cramped location, without treating that pattern alone as proof of a thermal design problem.
Network and wiring checks can explain an offline relay, but they do not make a physical hiss irrelevant. A capacitor may also test acceptably at room temperature yet misbehave under heat or ripple load; visual inspection or a single reading is not a complete diagnosis.
Is a noisy or failing Shelly 2.5 dangerous?
A capacitor that has simply lost capacitance may cause noise, instability, or loss of function without an immediate fire. But the device is connected to mains and can retain stored electrical energy; damaged components, overheated PCB material, loose connections, or compromised insulation can create shock, fire, or equipment risks. The product documentation’s high-voltage warning applies regardless of whether the symptom seems minor.
If there is smoke, burning odor, unusual heat, visible damage, or persistent unexplained noise, stop using the device. Have the relevant circuit isolated and the device removed or assessed by a qualified electrician or electronics repairer. Do not rely on a forum comment about a particular unit being harmless as a safety assessment for yours.

Repair, support, or replacement: how to decide

What a competent repair requires
A capacitor swap is not a safe beginner procedure just because the component is inexpensive. A qualified repairer should disconnect and remove the device, verify it is de-energized, account for stored charge, identify the exact board revision, and establish which part has actually failed. The Shelly 2.5 documentation warns about high voltage, including at the add-on interface when powered.
For a confirmed failed capacitor, matching the printed capacitance and voltage is not enough. The replacement also needs suitable polarity, temperature rating, ripple-current capability, ESR characteristics, dimensions, and lead spacing, with safe clearance from surrounding parts. The repairer should inspect related supply components and PCB condition, then test the device in a controlled, enclosed setup. A repair that makes a relay work again does not necessarily restore the original product certification, warranty, or safety condition.

A repair video identifies example replacement capacitors, but its choices are a creator’s repair selection—not an official parts list or a universal recommendation for every board revision: repair demonstration. Do not substitute the two high-voltage capacitors for a different arrangement, or change capacitance, voltage rating, or polarity casually.
Choosing a current replacement
If replacement is the right route, compare current products against the actual installation: two-channel switching, cover control, per-channel metering, protocol, wiring requirements, regional approvals, and enclosure space. Shelly’s U.S. product page marks the Plus 2PM as discontinued and directs buyers toward newer 2PM-generation products, so it should not be treated as the automatic new-purchase choice. The Shelly 2PM Gen3 is a current-generation option listed by Shelly with two channels, per-channel power metering, cover control, and features including Matter support after the relevant firmware update. If the job calls for a different wireless standard or a building already uses another ecosystem, alternatives may include Wi-Fi, Zigbee, or Bluetooth relay families. They are not direct drop-in equivalents in every installation: compare local-control behavior, hub requirements, metering, cover mode, certification, and wiring rather than choosing on channel count alone.
