Yukai Engineering’s fufuly is a cushion-shaped device that expands and contracts like a breathing body while you hug it. First shown as a concept at CES 2023, it later became a retail product in Japan. The idea is simple: give your body a gentle, physical rhythm to breathe along with. But fufuly is not a medical treatment, and its current official store listing says it is out of stock.
What is fufuly?
Fufuly is better described as a robotic breathing cushion than a conventional pillow. Turn it on, select a mode, and hold it against your torso. Its body mechanically inflates and contracts to create a breathing-like sensation. The intended effect is to encourage a slower, deeper breathing rhythm without requiring a screen, app, or voice assistant.
The device does not measure your breathing or adapt to biometric readings. Its movement provides a cue; it is not a conversational robot or an internet-connected wellness system. Let the rhythm guide you only if it feels comfortable—there is no need to force your breathing to match it.

How the breathing idea is supposed to work
Yukai describes fufuly as drawing on research into respiratory entrainment: the possibility that a rhythmic physical stimulus can influence a person’s breathing. A cushion that gently expands and contracts offers that cue through touch, much as a person might notice another person’s breathing while sitting close together. The company cited University of Tokyo research on a cushion-shaped device intended to influence respiratory rhythm and depth (research paper).

That research basis should not be confused with proof that the commercial fufuly treats anxiety, insomnia, panic disorder, depression, or another health condition. The product is designed to support relaxation and breathing awareness; the available evidence does not establish it as a clinical treatment or medical device. Stop using it if following its movement brings on dizziness, breathlessness, panic, pain, or worsening symptoms, and seek appropriate professional advice when needed.
What Yukai announced at CES 2023
Yukai Engineering introduced fufuly as a concept model ahead of CES 2023, which ran in Las Vegas from January 5 to 8. The project was developed with JT and Hakuhodo, and fufuly received a CES 2023 Innovation Award in the robotics category. That award recognizes design and engineering in the CES program; it is not a clinical endorsement or evidence of medical effectiveness. The company’s CES announcement said it was aiming to commercialize the concept, but did not yet give a final price or launch date.
The early concept descriptions named “Regular,” “Deep,” and a mode based on common relaxation-breathing techniques. The finished product’s mode names and presentation changed during development, so those CES-era labels should not be mistaken for the final controls.

From CES concept to Japanese retail product
- December 2022: Yukai previewed fufuly for CES Unveiled and described the early breathing modes.
- January 2023: The company announced it as a CES concept model and Innovation Award winner.
- October 17, 2023: A Kickstarter campaign launched. Yukai later reported raising ¥4,858,806 from 209 backers—647% of its goal.
- 2024: Reservations were offered ahead of retail sales. General sales in Japan began September 20 at ¥29,800, including tax.
- Current listing: Yukai’s official store lists fufuly at ¥29,800 but marks it out of stock. Availability can change; the listing is not evidence of stock or shipping to every country.
This history matters: the memorable CES announcement was a preview, not an immediate launch. The device did eventually reach Japanese retail, but the available official information does not establish a current U.S. retail price, international shipping policy, or international warranty support.
Modes, controls, and everyday use
The commercial version has three intended-use modes: Work for a brief reset, Rest for a slower break, and Sleep for winding down. These are use-oriented settings, not a promise of a particular health outcome. Yukai’s later store copy suggests a ten-minute session; earlier campaign material mentioned five minutes. Treat these as suggested short-use examples, not validated minimum treatment durations.
- Charge the cushion before use.
- Find the power button in the slit beside the zipper. A long press turns it on or off; a short press changes modes.
- Hug it against your torso and breathe naturally while noticing its movement.
- Turn it off when finished. The official FAQ says it shuts down automatically after 180 minutes of operation.

The device is a substantial cushion rather than a featherweight travel accessory. It needs about five hours to charge for a manufacturer-stated runtime of about eight hours, with actual use depending on operating frequency. Yukai also says a motor buzz during operation is normal. Buyers sensitive to repetitive motion or mechanical sound may find that distracting.
Should you buy it?
Fufuly makes most sense for someone who specifically wants a tactile breathing cue and is comfortable with a specialized piece of wellness hardware. It may appeal if audio instructions or a meditation app feel distracting, or if a physical object makes it easier to pause and breathe. Its controls are simple and it does not require an app subscription.
It is a weaker fit if you want a low-cost cushion, silent operation, smart-home features, voice control, biometric feedback, or a clinically validated anxiety or sleep intervention. At ¥29,800, it is expensive compared with a conventional body pillow, and its roughly 2 kg weight, charging requirement, motor sound, and 90-day listed warranty are practical trade-offs. The official listing currently says it is out of stock, so check the official store page for current stock and terms. Before buying from outside Japan, confirm shipping territory, import charges, returns, warranty coverage, charger compatibility, and battery-shipping rules directly with the seller.
Alternatives solve different problems
- Body or bolster pillow: A simpler, usually cheaper, silent option with no charging, but no breathing rhythm.
- Breathing or meditation app: Offers audio or visual pacing and often more customization, but is less tactile and keeps a screen or device involved.
- Respiratory biofeedback equipment: May be more suitable when measurable feedback is the goal, but it is not a like-for-like cushion and warrants careful scrutiny of its claims.
- Yukai’s Qoobo: Another robotic comfort product, but its moving tail is about companionship rather than breathing guidance. TechCrunch noted that fufuly does not directly respond to user stimulus (CES-era coverage).
None of these alternatives should be treated as a clinically equivalent substitute for fufuly—or as a replacement for professional care.

Yukai’s official FAQ suggests these checks:
- No movement or it stops quickly: Recharge it; a low battery may prevent movement or cut a session short.
- It will not turn on: Charge it, then long-press the power button beside the zipper.
- Charging light does not come on: The battery may already be full, or the device may have been stored unused for months. The FAQ advises leaving it connected for several hours; if charging still does not start, contact customer support.
- It turns off unexpectedly: The device automatically powers off after 180 minutes.
- It buzzes: Yukai says motor noise during operation is normal.
- Cleaning or disposal: Remove and hand-wash the cover as directed. Follow local-government guidance for battery recycling and disposal.
