You may be able to reuse old telephone wiring for Ethernet—but the cable and wiring layout, not the wall plate, determine whether it will work. If the run is intact Cat5e or Cat6 with four twisted pairs and connects directly to both ends, you can usually reterminate it as Ethernet. If it is older two-pair phone wire, daisy-chained, or damaged, a matched pair of telephone-line networking adapters or a new cable run is usually the better choice.
First, identify what is behind the telephone jack
RJ11 describes a common telephone plug and jack format; it does not identify the cable behind it. The cable may be Cat5e, Cat6, older Cat3, low-grade telephone wire, or flat cord. A new RJ45 faceplate cannot change the cable’s electrical properties.
Remove the wall plate and inspect the cable jacket for printed markings such as CAT 5, CAT 5E, or CAT 6. Count the insulated conductors and group them into pairs. Four twisted pairs are the normal target for Gigabit Ethernet. A Cat5e or Cat6 marking is encouraging, but the cable still needs an intact, correctly terminated, point-to-point run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCat3 is older twisted-pair cable and may be usable for some lower-speed links, but do not assume it will deliver a particular speed. Two-pair wire may work with some equipment at 10 or 100 Mbps, but that is an uncertain legacy possibility, not a sound design for a dependable modern Ethernet connection. A single pair, untwisted station wire, or flat telephone cord is not a conventional Ethernet candidate.

| What you find | Likely next step |
|---|---|
| Four intact twisted pairs, Cat5e/Cat6, home-run cable | Consider direct RJ45 retermination and test the completed link. |
| Four pairs, but old or unmarked cable | Inspect carefully and test; do not promise Gigabit. |
| One or two pairs of telephone wire | Prefer matched telephone-line adapters or another medium. |
| Untwisted, brittle, corroded, spliced, or damaged cable | Replace it or choose a different network path. |
| Several phone outlets joined along the route | Correct the topology or avoid direct Ethernet conversion. |
Check the route: home-run or daisy-chain?
Standard Ethernet cabling expects a continuous run between the outlet and network equipment, such as a router, switch, or patch panel. Older telephone wiring often runs from one jack to the next, with outlets connected in parallel. That arrangement can work for voice but is not equivalent to a dedicated Ethernet home run.
Look for a structured-media enclosure, wiring closet, basement or attic junction, or telephone demarcation point. Use a toner and probe to identify the cable if several similar wires are bundled together; label both ends as soon as you identify them. Do not assume the nearest telephone junction is the right cable or that every house has a central wiring location.

Before disconnecting or modifying anything, confirm the line is no longer in use. It may still serve telephone service, DSL, an alarm, fax, or intercom equipment. If you are unsure whether a line is active, consult the service provider or a qualified installer.
Two ways to reuse the wiring
| Direct RJ45 retermination | Telephone-line adapters | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Turns suitable structured cable into a conventional Ethernet link by terminating both ends. | Uses adapters at both ends to carry network traffic over existing copper phone wiring; each adapter presents Ethernet to the device. |
| Best fit | Four-pair Cat5e/Cat6 home run with accessible ends. | Old phone wire where running new cable is difficult and the route is usable. |
| Hardware | RJ45 keystone, far-end Ethernet-rated termination, punch-down tool, and tester. | A compatible matched pair or kit, Ethernet patch cords, and an appropriate network connection at each end. |
| Main limitation | Unknown cable quality, missing pairs, or daisy-chain topology can prevent a reliable link. | Performance depends on the wire, distance, noise, junctions, and adapter support for the topology. |
| Does the phone jack itself become Ethernet? | Yes, if the cable and both terminations are suitable. | Usually no: the adapter, rather than the bare phone jack, provides the Ethernet port. |
For an old telephone-wire route, G.hn or VDSL-style adapters may be a practical alternative. They do not turn unsuitable phone cable into standards-compliant Ethernet cable; they transmit network traffic over that copper between endpoint devices. Follow the adapter maker’s current specifications and verify availability, support, and warranty in your region. A daisy-chain or bridged phone network may not work reliably with a given kit. See the Giga Copper product information for one example of this category.

How to reterminate suitable cable
Before you start
- Confirm the telephone line and any connected services are disconnected and not needed.
- Photograph the existing wiring before removing it.
- Check the jacket marking, count the pairs, and locate both ends.
- Verify that the run is not daisy-chained or joined to a telephone distribution circuit.
- Gather a Cat5e/Cat6-rated RJ45 keystone, a suitable far-end termination, an IDC punch-down tool, and a wire-map tester.
Terminate the wall and far ends
- Remove the phone plate and expose enough cable to work without pulling or damaging the run. Keep the cable jacket and pair twists as close to the termination as the hardware allows.
- Install an Ethernet-rated RJ45 keystone. Choose either T568A or T568B and follow the color diagram printed on that specific jack.
- Preserve the twisted pairs: do not split a pair across unrelated pin positions. Telephone-wire color conventions vary, so do not rely on a familiar-looking color sequence.
- Punch down each conductor with the correct IDC tool, then trim excess wire as directed by the keystone instructions.
- At the far end, terminate the same cable on a patch panel, an Ethernet-rated keystone or module, or other appropriate Ethernet hardware. Connect that port to a router or switch with a patch cable.
- Use the same termination scheme at both ends for a normal straight-through link.
T568A and T568B are both valid. The important rule is to use one consistently at both ends and preserve the correct pairs; T568B is common in many U.S. residential installations but is not required. For the standard’s color and pin assignments, consult Fluke Networks’ T568A/T568B reference. Do not connect loose telephone conductors to random RJ45 contacts or assume an ordinary voice-only distribution block is suitable Ethernet hardware.
Test the wiring—and understand what the test proves
- With the run disconnected from networking equipment, connect a wire-map tester at each end.
- Check for opens, shorts, reversals, crossed wires, and split pairs. Correct any mapping fault before connecting devices.
- Connect the far-end port to a switch or router and a laptop or other Ethernet device to the wall jack.
- Check the negotiated link speed and confirm that the connection remains stable under sustained network use.
- If the connection matters for work or high-throughput equipment, run a sustained file transfer or suitable network performance test in addition to checking link status.
A basic continuity or wire-map tester can show that conductors reach the expected pins; it does not certify that old cable meets Cat5e performance or will reliably carry a target speed. Formal certification requires appropriate test equipment. If the cable maps correctly but performs poorly, investigate the cable category, pair balance, hidden splices, damage, and termination quality.

- Cat6 Ethernet Punch Down Connector: Allow to wired the jack according to A/B color code(Need a wire stripper cutter).
- Unlike the female to female Cat6 keystone jack, you have to prepare a Ethernet cable has rj45 connectors on both end, this punch down style jack allow you to make the connection very quickly.
- Compatiple with Cat7/Cat6/Cat5e Ethernet cable, strongly recommend use with CAT6 ethernet cable in order to avoid the signal degration issue.
- Used with 1 gang low voltage mounting bracket(NOT INCLUDED).
- The Cat6 jack can be snapped into or removed from the wall plate.
What speed should you expect?
Do not predict speed from the outlet shape or a quick visual inspection. A 10-Mbps or 100-Mbps link may be possible on some older or two-pair installations, but compatibility and stability vary. Gigabit Ethernet normally uses all four pairs and calls for suitable cable and terminations; unknown telephone wire may fail to negotiate Gigabit or may drop packets even if it links. Do not promise 2.5, 5, or 10 Gbps over repurposed, unverified phone cable.

A 1-Gbps link between a computer and router does not mean the internet service delivers 1 Gbps. If a link negotiates only 100 Mbps, treat that as evidence to inspect the wiring—not proof that 100 Mbps is the maximum the cable can ever support.

Do not assume unknown phone wire is safe for PoE
Power over Ethernet adds electrical power to the cable as well as data. Suitability depends on conductor resistance, cable construction and condition, insulation, temperature, bundle conditions, terminations, and the relevant PoE implementation. A cable that carries data successfully—especially at 100 Mbps—is not automatically safe or compatible for powering an access point, camera, or other device.
Use verified Cat5e/Cat6 cable for PoE installations and follow the powered device and switch manufacturer’s requirements. If the cable category or condition is unknown, do not use it for PoE.
Quick Recap
If direct conversion is a poor fit
- Run new Cat5e or Cat6: The most predictable choice for a home office, gaming PC, NAS, access point, camera, or any connection requiring dependable Gigabit or PoE. Cable fishing, drilling, and applicable code requirements may make a low-voltage installer worthwhile.
- Use MoCA over coax: Consider this if the rooms have a usable coax path. Adapter compatibility and the coax layout—including splitters and filters—matter. See the MoCA Alliance for technology information.
- Try powerline networking: It uses electrical wiring and can be convenient, but results vary with circuits, panels, electrical noise, and appliances. Treat it as a variable fallback, not a guaranteed Ethernet replacement.
- Use Wi-Fi mesh or wireless backhaul: This avoids new in-wall cabling, but performance depends on signal quality and placement. Wired backhaul is generally preferable when a reliable wired path is available.
Troubleshooting common failures
- No link: The wrong cable may have been identified, a conductor may be open, or the far end may still be attached to a telephone circuit. Recheck the cable route and tester map.
- Tester passes but performance is poor: Look for a split pair, unsuitable cable, excessive untwisting, hidden splice, or damage. A basic tester does not certify transmission performance.
- One end uses A and the other B: Re-terminate both ends consistently for a straight-through link.
- Only 100 Mbps or an unstable link: Check that all four pairs are present and correctly mapped, then inspect terminations and topology. Do not force a higher speed in software as a substitute for fixing the physical path.
- Link drops intermittently: Check for loose punch-downs, damaged insulation, excessive untwisting, and in-wall splices.
- Telephone service stops working: The wiring may still be connected to an active service or shared equipment. Restore the photographed wiring if safe to do so and contact the provider or an installer.
Make the decision
- Is the cable four-pair Cat5e/Cat6? If yes, continue; if no or unknown, do not assume direct Ethernet will work.
- Is it a clean point-to-point run with both ends accessible? If yes, retermination and testing are reasonable. If it branches through other phone jacks, direct conversion is not a straightforward project.
- Do you need dependable Gigabit, PoE, or more? If the existing cable cannot be verified, run new cable. For old phone copper that is difficult to replace, investigate compatible endpoint adapters instead.
- Does testing show the speed and stability you need? Keep the installation only if it remains reliable under use; otherwise replace the path or choose MoCA, powerline, or Wi-Fi based on the home’s wiring and performance needs.
