Apple released tvOS 18.4 on March 31, 2025, with support for controlling compatible Matter robot vacuums through Apple Home. The qualification matters: installing the update does not make every Wi-Fi vacuum work with Apple Home. Your vacuum must support the relevant Matter features, and your Apple devices and home setup must be compatible. Since tvOS 18.4 is no longer the latest release, install the newest update your Apple TV offers rather than trying to find 18.4 specifically.
What tvOS 18.4 actually added
tvOS 18.4 was released for Apple TV HD and all Apple TV 4K models. Apple included security fixes as well as support in its home ecosystem for compatible robot vacuums using Matter, the smart-home interoperability standard. Apple’s release information confirms the date and supported Apple TV models.
This is best understood as an Apple Home feature that spans Apple’s home software—not as a special vacuum-control app built into Apple TV. Apple says compatible robot vacuums can be used in Home controls, scenes and automations, and Siri can be asked to clean a particular room. Apple’s Home announcement describes the broader rollout.

So “now available” describes the 2025 release, not a current 2026 update. Apple’s security-release list and tvOS release notes document later releases.

Matter is the compatibility requirement
Matter is what lets supported smart-home accessories work across participating ecosystems. Apple identifies robot vacuums among the Matter device types its home platform can control. Apple’s Matter documentation provides the technical context.
A vacuum having Wi-Fi, a manufacturer app, or Alexa and Google Home support does not automatically make it an Apple Home accessory. Check the exact model’s specifications and manufacturer instructions for Matter support. Firmware, country availability, and whether a separate bridge is required can all affect setup. A “Matter-ready” label is not enough unless the manufacturer explains how that specific model can be commissioned into Apple Home.

What you need
- An eligible Apple TV: Apple TV HD or any Apple TV 4K model, updated to tvOS 18.4 or newer. If it is offered a newer compatible release, use that.
- A Matter-capable vacuum: Verify the exact model, firmware, region, and any bridge requirement with the manufacturer.
- Updated Apple Home devices: Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac you use with Home, as well as any HomePod or HomePod mini serving as a hub. Apple described the feature as part of its wider Home software rollout, not an Apple TV-only change. Apple’s iPadOS release information also discusses robot-vacuum support.
- A home hub for hub-dependent features: Apple TV, HomePod, and HomePod mini can act as Apple Home hubs. The hub helps keep the home available for remote access and automations; the vacuum itself must still support Matter. Apple’s Home app overview describes hub capabilities.
- The manufacturer app and current vacuum firmware: You may need the app to update the vacuum, enable Matter, retrieve its setup code, configure its map, or manage advanced cleaning settings.
Apple Home may require Apple’s newer Home architecture. If Home reports that your setup needs an upgrade, follow Apple’s instructions for the devices and software in your home rather than assuming the Apple TV update alone is sufficient.

How to update Apple TV
- On Apple TV, open Settings.
- Select System, then Software Updates.
- Choose Update Software to check for an update. If available, select Download and Install. You can also enable Update Automatically.
- Keep the Apple TV connected to power and the network while it downloads and installs; it may restart.
These are the settings used for the tvOS 18.4 update. The release coverage records the installation path. Because 18.4 is an older release, a current Apple TV may offer a later version instead; take the latest compatible update it presents.

How to add a Matter vacuum to Apple Home
The precise process varies by manufacturer, but the usual flow is:
- Update the Apple TV or other home hub, the Apple device running Home, and any HomePod hubs.
- Use the vacuum manufacturer’s app to install available firmware updates and enable Matter if the model requires it.
- Find the vacuum’s Matter QR code or numeric setup code. Depending on the product, it may be on the device, in its app, or provided during setup.
- Open Apple’s Home app and tap Add Accessory.
- Scan the code or enter it manually, then follow the on-screen steps to assign the vacuum to a room.
- Test a basic start or stop action. Then add the vacuum to a scene or automation if desired.
Manufacturers do not all expose Matter setup in the same place, and some use a bridge. Use the official instructions for the exact model; do not assume that a setup code from one app or ecosystem can be reused indefinitely.

What you can control—and what may remain in the vacuum app
Apple Home is a convenient control and automation layer. Depending on the vacuum’s Matter implementation, you may be able to start or stop cleaning, return it to its dock, or clean a room or area. Apple documents the ability to put a robot vacuum in scenes and automations, and gives asking Siri to clean a specific room as an example. Apple Home

Try commands such as “Hey Siri, start cleaning,” “Hey Siri, pause the vacuum,” or “Hey Siri, clean the living room.” Treat these as examples, not guaranteed commands: the supported actions depend on the model and firmware, and room-specific commands depend on the vacuum’s map, room assignments in Home, Siri language and region, and whether the vacuum is reachable.

Do not expect Home to replace the manufacturer’s app. Mapping, room naming, no-go zones, detailed schedules, mop and water settings, cleaning history, firmware updates, diagnostics, and advanced obstacle-avoidance options may remain there. For many households, the practical arrangement is to configure and maintain the vacuum in its own app, then use Home and Siri for everyday commands and automations.
Troubleshooting common setup problems

Should you choose a Matter robot vacuum?
Matter support is useful if you want basic vacuum control alongside lights, locks, sensors, scenes, and Siri commands in Apple Home. Before buying, verify the exact model’s Matter support and regional availability, whether setup is native or needs a bridge, which commands it exposes, and whether its manufacturer app still provides the mapping and maintenance tools you need.
Do not choose a premium vacuum solely for Apple Home integration if your priority is advanced mapping or cleaning controls inside Home; those features may still live in the manufacturer app. Likewise, there is no need to buy an Apple TV specifically for vacuum control if you already have a HomePod or HomePod mini serving as your home hub. Apple’s feature announcement describes the platform capability, but actual compatibility and controls are product-specific.
