Verdict: The Narwal Freo X Ultra is easiest to recommend in a home with mostly hard floors, where automated mop washing and drying matter more than top-tier carpet pickup. Its rotating mop pads, DirtSense cleaning behavior, and hair-resistant brush address real day-to-day chores. But it is an older premium model, not an automatic best buy: carpet performance, obstacle handling, ongoing maintenance, and the price you can actually pay all matter. Buy it at a substantial discount if mopping is your priority; compare newer Roborock and Dreame options if your home is mixed-floor or cluttered.
There is also a configuration wrinkle: the dust-storage arrangement has changed since the earliest reviews. Confirm whether the specific unit you are buying uses a base-station dust bag or an earlier arrangement before judging its convenience. Narwal’s U.S. listing showed $699.99 against a displayed $899.99 regular price in the research snapshot, but the product was marked out of stock, so neither price nor availability should be treated as a live offer.
What the Narwal Freo X Ultra is
The Freo X Ultra is a robot vacuum and mop paired with a multifunction dock. Rather than dragging a single damp cloth, it uses two rotating mop pads; the dock can wash and dry them, manage clean and dirty water, and store dust according to the unit’s configuration. The robot maps rooms using tri-laser navigation, offers app-based room and zone controls, and uses Narwal’s DirtSense system to adjust cleaning when it detects dirtier areas.
Narwal advertises 8,200Pa suction, 99% particle removal on hard floors, up to seven weeks of dust storage, and zero-hair-tangling certification. Those are manufacturer claims, not universal results: floors, debris, settings, home size, and the dust-storage configuration affect what owners experience. At 350 × 350 × 107 mm, the robot is about 10.7 cm tall. Measure the lowest point under furniture, including crossbars and hanging fabric, before expecting it to clean beneath it. The dock measures 415 × 370 × 434 mm, so allow for its footprint and room to access the tanks. These dimensions come from the Freo X Ultra manual.
6 things to love
1. Mopping is the reason to choose it
The strongest case for the Freo X Ultra is routine hard-floor mopping. Rotating pads physically scrub instead of simply trailing a cloth, and the dock washes and dries the pads after a run. Narwal says DirtSense can send the robot back over dirtier areas and continue until they are clean enough. Independent reviews likewise identify mopping as a key strength, though results depend on the mess and floor. Tech Advisor’s review and RTINGS’ review offer independent perspectives.
That combination is especially useful for tile, sealed wood, and other hard floors that collect everyday kitchen or entryway grime. It saves the repeated chore of removing and rinsing a pad by hand. It does not mean you can leave every spill to a robot: dried-on, sticky, or unusually large messes may still need prompt manual attention, and no automated system should be assumed to handle pet accidents safely without verified testing.

2. The main brush is designed to resist hair tangles
Long human hair and shedding can turn a conventional roller into a regular cutting-and-cleaning job. Narwal says the Freo X Ultra’s brush has TÜV and SGS zero-hair-tangling certification. That design should be appealing if roller maintenance is a particular nuisance, but “zero tangling” is not “zero maintenance.” Hair can still collect on side brushes, axles, or wheels, while filters and mop components need attention. Check the brush and surrounding parts periodically rather than waiting for a blockage.

3. The dock takes care of repetitive mop chores
Washing and drying the pads, replenishing clean water, and collecting dirty water are meaningful conveniences. They make it more realistic to schedule frequent mopping without manually cleaning a cloth after each run. The dock does not eliminate ownership chores: you still have to empty tanks, clean the wash tray, replace consumables, and check the robot. Narwal’s Freo X Ultra support library includes separate maintenance instructions for tanks, filters, pads, dust storage, and the tray.
4. Dust collection can avoid a loud auto-emptying blast
Depending on the unit’s dust-storage configuration, collection is designed around storing debris rather than performing the familiar loud, short auto-empty cycle common on many robot docks. That may suit apartment living, overnight schedules, or anyone who dislikes sudden vacuum noise. It is a relative advantage, not silence: the robot makes noise while cleaning, and the dock’s mop-washing and drying functions also operate.
5. Mapping is useful in open, uncluttered homes
Tri-laser navigation is intended to map rooms and plan routes without depending on a conventional forward-facing camera. That can be attractive if you prefer a camera-free approach, but verify the hardware on the regional model you are buying rather than assuming all editions are identical. Good mapping helps the robot cover an open-plan floor and supports room-by-room or zone cleaning. It is not the same as reliably recognizing every obstacle: cables, socks, toys, and other small objects can still cause trouble.

Narwal advertises millimeter-precision obstacle avoidance, but independent comparison testing tempers that claim. RTINGS found the Roborock Qrevo better at obstacle maneuvering. Keep floors reasonably clear, particularly before a scheduled run, if small objects or pet items are common in your home.
6. The app provides detailed cleaning control
The Narwal app supports setup and mapping, room and zone cleaning, schedules, boundaries, and cleaning preferences. Depending on the current app and firmware, controls include different combinations of vacuum-only, mop-only, and combined cleaning, plus settings for suction, mopping, carpets, and mop care. Menu names and options can change, so check the current app rather than relying on an old screen-by-screen guide. Narwal’s support library documents pairing, map creation, Freo Mind, and base controls.
Control depth is not the same as ease of use. RTINGS gives Roborock an edge for app usability and feature richness in its comparison. If you want a robot that needs very little setup or adjustment, plan for mapping and zone configuration rather than assuming the app will make the first run effortless.

2 things to hate
1. Vacuuming, particularly on carpet, is not its strongest argument
A robot mop can impress on tile while leaving a carpeted home wanting more. The Freo X Ultra’s headline suction number does not establish how well it will collect fine debris, pet hair, or larger pieces from a particular rug. Independent testing rates the model as less well-rounded than some alternatives; RTINGS favors the Roborock Qrevo overall and reports stronger debris pickup and obstacle maneuvering in its comparison. Its review also finds the Freo X Ultra’s capabilities uneven against competitors.
If your home has thick rugs, carpeted bedrooms, or heavy shedding on carpet, compare independent pickup tests for those surfaces before buying. A hard-floor-first home can live with a more modest vacuuming result; a carpet-heavy home cannot. For mixed flooring, test the robot’s carpet recognition and mop behavior on your actual rugs, and create no-mop zones if needed. Verify that the pads lift enough for your rugs and that the robot does not leave damp tracks; those details should not be assumed from the feature list.
2. The dock automates chores; it does not make ownership maintenance-free
You still need to empty clean and dirty water tanks, clean the wash tray, replace or maintain filters and dust bags, inspect pads and side brushes, and keep sensors and wheels clear. A complex cleaning system also means more setup: map the home, check room boundaries and no-go zones, and troubleshoot connectivity or routing if a run goes wrong.

Dust bags are a recurring cost and configuration matters. Narwal describes its bag as approximately 1 liter and says it can last about seven weeks depending on use; that is an estimate, not a promise for homes with pets, frequent runs, or heavy debris. The company’s dust bag versus dust bin guidance explains the options. Check bag and accessory compatibility and availability before purchase, especially if you want to avoid proprietary consumables.

Early coverage and later listings may describe different dust-storage arrangements. BGR notes that a later revision replaced the internal dust-storage bags criticized in its original review with a debris bag in the base station. Do not assume every Freo X Ultra listing, regional edition, or used unit includes the same setup; confirm exactly what the seller is shipping. The change matters to convenience and ownership costs, but it does not by itself establish that the robot’s vacuuming or navigation performance changed. BGR’s review discusses the revision.

Check live availability, seller authorization, included dust bags and pads, and the return terms before comparing it with newer models. Narwal also displayed paid extended-warranty options, but their presence is not evidence of repair quality; read coverage, exclusions, and eligibility before paying for one.
Who should buy the Freo X Ultra?
- Mostly hard floors: The best fit, especially if frequent mopping and automated pad care are more important than best-in-class vacuuming. A home with roughly 60–70% or more hard floor is a sensible starting point for considering it, not a guarantee of fit.
- Long hair or shedding: The brush design may reduce roller cleanup. Pet owners should separately consider carpet-fur pickup, kibble or litter collection, and how quickly the wash tray gets dirty.
- Mixed floors: Compare carpet tests, check how the robot treats your rugs, and establish no-mop zones where appropriate. Do not rely on suction claims alone.
- Mostly carpet or high-pile rugs: Usually look elsewhere first. Prioritize independent pickup results on your carpet type.
- Cluttered rooms: If cables, socks, toys, or pet items are often on the floor, a model with stronger independently tested obstacle handling is a safer shortlist.
- Low furniture: Measure clearance against the robot’s 107 mm height, including trim and obstructions under the furniture.
- Lowest running cost: Factor in bags, pads, filters, detergent, and maintenance. Verify compatible consumables and their availability before committing.

Before the first cleaning run
- Place the dock on a level surface with enough room to reach the tanks and let the robot dock.
- Install the robot’s side brush and mop components as directed, and fill the clean-water tank. Follow Narwal’s instructions for the approved detergent system.
- Pair it with the Narwal app and run its initial map with cables, socks, and small objects cleared from the floor; keep doors open to rooms you want mapped.
- Review room boundaries and create no-go or no-mop zones where needed. Avoid moving the dock after mapping unless you are prepared to check the map again.
- Test vacuum-only, mop-only, and combined cleaning, then check carpet behavior before scheduling a full mixed-floor run.
- Confirm that the robot returns to the dock and that mop washing and drying begin. After early runs, inspect the wash tray and empty the dirty-water tank.
- Keep compatible bags, pads, filters, and side brushes available, and replace or clean parts according to the manual and app prompts.
If it misses rooms, clear the route, leave doors open, and remap; then inspect boundaries and no-go zones. If it leaves debris, check the brush, side brushes, filter, and dust-storage setup before increasing suction or running a vacuum-only pass. If pads smell or remain damp, clean the tray and dirty-water tank, verify the drying cycle completed, and replace contaminated pads. If the app will not connect, follow Narwal’s current pairing workflow and check whether the physical controls can start a basic run; do not assume full offline control without verifying it on your unit.
