Google is extending its camera experience beyond Nest-branded hardware, but it has not opened Nest into a universal camera platform. On October 1, 2025, the company announced Walmart as its first partner for cameras built for Google Home. The wired onn Indoor Camera launched in the United States at $22.96, with 1080p live view, Google Home app setup and control, and intelligent alerts. The price is historical launch pricing, not a verified current Walmart price.
What Google opened—and what it didn’t
Google’s announcement is best understood as a partner-hardware expansion: selected third-party cameras can join Google Home with deeper integration than a basic connection to a smart-home app. Walmart was the first named partner, with the onn Indoor Camera Wired and onn Video Doorbell Wired announced for sale through Walmart in the United States. Google described setup and control through the Google Home app and compatibility with Google Home Premium features. Google’s announcement does not establish a public Nest camera API, unrestricted developer access, or support for arbitrary ONVIF, RTSP, or other IP cameras.
In practical terms, the onn camera gets meaningful Google Home integration and access to certain Google software features. That does not make it identical to a Nest Cam, nor does it guarantee matching image quality, recording options, hardware controls, or future feature support. Google’s first-party cameras announced alongside the partner devices were specified for 2K HDR; the onn camera’s stated live-view resolution is 1080p.

The onn Indoor Camera Wired is an indoor camera that needs wired power. Google announced 1080p live view, setup and control in Google Home, intelligent alerts, and compatibility with Google Home Premium. Its $22.96 price was the launch price on October 1, 2025; check Walmart for the current price and availability.

The announcement does not establish several details buyers might reasonably want, including field of view, frame rate, night-vision performance, local-storage support, Wi-Fi bands, privacy hardware, warranty, or whether continuous recording is supported on this specific model. Don’t infer those specifications from another onn product. The device was announced for the U.S. market, so availability and feature access elsewhere should not be assumed.
The camera is cheap; the full Google experience may not be
The camera’s hardware price is not the same as the cost of cloud history or Google’s more advanced camera analysis. Google Home Premium is a whole-home subscription rather than a separate plan for each camera, but benefits vary by plan, device, and region. Google’s feature and history documentation distinguishes event history from 24/7 recording, which is limited to eligible wired cameras.

Those are Google’s October 2025 launch prices, not independently verified current prices. At those historical prices, an illustrative first year would total $122.96 for the camera plus Standard annually, or $222.96 with Advanced annually. If you already subscribe to an eligible plan, adding the camera may not add another subscription charge. Google said AI Pro and Ultra subscribers received Home Premium benefits, but check current membership terms to confirm what is included.
Google’s support page says Gemini camera features—including AI descriptions, AI notifications, and Home Brief—require Advanced, with availability dependent on product, region, and rollout. Google’s Gemini camera feature documentation is the place to check eligibility. Do not assume the camera’s low purchase price includes cloud recording or the full AI feature set, or that a particular free recording period is available for this model.

onn versus the new Nest cameras

Google also announced a $149.99 Nest Cam Outdoor (second generation), a $249.99 outdoor two-pack, and a $179.99 Nest Doorbell (third generation) at launch. Those first-party cameras were described as having 2K HDR video, wider views, improved low-light performance, and hardware designed to provide richer data for Gemini analysis. These are announcement specifications and prices, not a current retail comparison.

It makes the most sense for someone who already uses Google Home, wants inexpensive indoor coverage, and values managing compatible devices in one app. It may be particularly convenient in a mixed household of Nest and partner cameras, or for a subscriber who already pays for Google Home Premium and wants another camera covered by the household plan.
Look elsewhere—or confirm specifications before buying—if you need an outdoor or weather-rated camera, local recording, a particular privacy control, reliable 24/7 recording, or the highest image quality. The announcement identifies this as an indoor wired model and does not document those other requirements. If you are comparing Wyze or Ring, compare their current models’ recording options, app experience, and subscription terms; the evidence here does not support a direct specification-by-specification comparison. Ring and Wyze are distinct ecosystems, while the onn camera’s clearest stated advantage is Google Home integration.

What it means for Nest owners
Google is signaling that its home software and Gemini features need not remain exclusive to Google-branded cameras. That could give existing Nest households a cheaper way to add indoor coverage, while giving Google a broader hardware base for its Home services. It is a meaningful distribution shift, but it is not proof that every camera can join Google Home or that each compatible camera will receive every Nest feature.
Before buying, check the specific camera’s supported recording modes, the Google Home Premium tier required for the features you want, and availability in your country. Even cameras in one Google Home household may differ in which history and AI features they support.
