1X introduced NEO Gamma on February 21, 2025, as a softer, quieter humanoid designed for homes. Its most striking feature was a seamless knitted nylon suit. But Gamma was a development prototype, not a proven autonomous household helper—and it is not the product 1X currently offers for preorder. The successor, called NEO, was announced in October 2025.
What was NEO Gamma?
NEO Gamma was the latest stage in 1X’s effort to build a humanoid for domestic settings, following NEO Beta. The company presented it as a platform for developing and testing home robotics, not as a finished retail appliance. Its human-scale form was intended to work in spaces designed for people, using familiar household objects and navigating rooms, rather than operating in a factory built around specialized equipment.
That human-like form is also a trade-off. A biped can potentially use human-oriented rooms and tools, but balance and walking add complexity. A humanoid appearance alone does not show that a robot can reliably handle everyday chores.
1X’s February 2025 announcement described Gamma’s design and company-reported capabilities.

Why put a knitted nylon suit on a robot?
1X described Gamma’s outer garment as soft, durable nylon made through a seamless whole-garment knitting process on a Japanese Shimaseiki machine. The announcement also used the phrase “3D printed.” That wording can be confusing: the manufacturing description is digitally programmed knitting, not the familiar process of building a plastic object layer by layer.
The garment was an engineering and human-factors choice, not just styling. Soft coverage can make a machine feel less industrial in a living space, cover hard components, and reduce the severity of some incidental contact compared with exposed rigid mechanisms. It may also reduce exposed snag or pinch points. Those are useful design aims, but a fabric layer cannot eliminate the risks posed by a moving machine.
Softness does not make a robot child-safe or pet-safe. Its mass, momentum, gripping force, balance, and response to unexpected contact still matter. Safety depends on the whole system: mechanical design, force limits, sensing, control software, emergency stops, and testing in real conditions. The available announcement does not establish that Gamma had been independently validated for unsupervised use around children, older adults, or animals.

1X said Gamma improved on earlier systems with more natural-looking walking and arm swing, the ability to squat and sit, and a whole-body controller operating at 100 Hz. The company also described reinforcement-learning control trained with human motion-capture data, improved visual manipulation across different objects and scenarios, tendon-driven joints with soft covers, and expressive “Ear Rings” that provide visual feedback.

The launch material further claimed a 10-decibel noise reduction and a tenfold increase in hardware reliability. Gamma was described as having four microphones with beamforming and echo cancellation, plus a three-speaker audio system. These are company-reported specifications and improvements, not independent measurements of long-term household performance.
Promotional footage showed domestic activities including vacuuming, watering plants, making coffee, handling laundry, picking up objects, and moving around a living room. “Shown doing” is not the same as “reliably performs on its own.” A video can establish that a task was attempted or demonstrated; it does not, by itself, establish success rates, repeatability across homes, or autonomy.
The autonomy caveat: AI is not the same as independence
Contemporary reporting on Gamma’s demonstrations and planned home testing described human teleoperation. A remote operator could use the robot’s cameras and sensors and control its limbs. That distinction changes what a demonstration means: the robot may supply the physical body and some onboard intelligence while a person supplies judgment or direct control.
Recommended Free Tools
- Autonomous navigation: the robot chooses and carries out movement without direct human control.
- Autonomous manipulation: it plans and performs a task, such as picking up and placing an object, without a person directing each action.
- Supervised autonomy: it acts within limits but can ask for human help.
- Teleoperation: a remote person directly controls some or all of its actions.
Calling a system AI-powered or saying it learns from demonstrations does not establish that it can complete household chores autonomously. In a March 2025 report, TechCrunch described a demonstration in which Gamma dropped a vacuum, began shaking, and collapsed before being caught by 1X’s CEO. 1X attributed the incident to Wi-Fi problems and low battery. The episode is a reminder that a home robot has to handle not only the intended task, but also connectivity loss, low charge, unfamiliar objects, and instability safely.

For a prospective owner, the useful question is not simply whether a robot can perform a chore in a demonstration. It is how often it can do so without human intervention, across different layouts and objects, and what happens when it cannot.
What happened next: the current product is NEO
On October 28, 2025, 1X announced NEO, the successor to NEO Gamma and NEO Beta. The company’s current product is called NEO, not NEO Gamma. Gamma’s prototype specifications and demonstrations should not automatically be treated as specifications or proven performance for the successor.
For current NEO, 1X lists 22-degree-of-freedom hands, a soft body incorporating custom 3D-lattice polymer structures, and Tendon Drive actuation. Its stated weight is 66 pounds (about 30 kilograms). The company claims lifting capacity above 150 pounds, carrying capacity of 55 pounds, and a noise level of 22 dB; it also lists Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 5G connectivity. The current order materials describe a machine-washable nylon suit and shoes. These are 1X’s figures and product claims, not independent test results.
The order page also describes an “Expert Mode,” in which a 1X Expert can guide the robot through unfamiliar chores. That is an important part of the product proposition: customers should understand when remote help is available, whether it is optional or needed for particular tasks, and how it affects privacy and day-to-day usefulness.

Preorder, price, and delivery plans
1X’s current materials list two purchasing routes: $20,000 for Early Access ownership, which the company says includes a three-year warranty, premium support, and priority delivery; or a $499-per-month subscription, with delivery planned later than the ownership tier. The company has said U.S. deliveries are planned to begin in 2026, with expansion to other markets from 2027. A preorder and a planned delivery window are not evidence of broad shipment or independently reviewed consumer performance.
The NEO product page displays a separate $200 deposit. Do not treat that amount as the full price. Check the live order agreement to establish whether a deposit is refundable, credited toward an order, and applicable to either purchasing route. Before committing, also verify delivery timing, subscription duration and cancellation rules, service geography, repairs, replacement parts, and any other charges. A launch price is not a complete total-cost calculation.
Whether NEO is worthwhile depends on demonstrated task value, not on its humanoid form alone. Consider which chores it can actually complete, how often a human must step in, how the home’s thresholds, stairs, rugs, clutter, and charging location affect operation, and how downtime and maintenance are handled. For a single predictable job, a purpose-built appliance may be a more mature and less complex solution; a humanoid’s potential advantage is the ability to handle a wider range of tasks in spaces already designed for people.
Privacy and safety belong in the buying decision
A home robot may operate around cameras, microphones, household layouts, family routines, and visitors. TechCrunch reported that 1X said customers could decide when an employee could view NEO Gamma’s surroundings for auditing or teleoperation. That reported control does not answer every question about the current product or establish a complete privacy policy.

Before allowing remote access, a household should seek clear answers: When can an operator see or hear the home? Is access optional, or required for some tasks? Are recordings stored, for how long, and used for model training? Can occupants disable cameras and microphones? Can a homeowner set no-go zones, and is there an audit trail of human access? What happens if Wi-Fi, 5G, or cloud services fail during a task? Check the current privacy terms and customer agreement rather than assuming these protections.
Safety questions are equally practical: what force limits and collision responses apply, how the robot behaves when it loses balance or connectivity, and what emergency stop is available? A soft garment can make contact less harsh, but it cannot answer those system-level questions. Claims about suitability around vulnerable people or pets require evidence beyond the appearance of the suit.
The verdict on “softest humanoid”
NEO Gamma was a distinctive home-robot prototype, and its knitted nylon covering made softness a visible part of its design. “Softest humanoid” is not a verified technical ranking, however. Gamma was a development step, with demonstrations that involved teleoperation—not proof of a dependable, autonomous robot butler. The commercial proposition now belongs to successor NEO, whose preorder price, planned delivery, remote assistance, privacy terms, and real-world reliability should be assessed on their own merits.
