Verdict: The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is a capable, highly automated vacuum-and-mop for mixed floors and pet hair, but its “AI” is a set of useful, limited features—not a promise that it will recognize every hazard or clean every stain. Its dock is a major convenience; its vibrating mop and obstacle avoidance are less impressive than newer designs. It makes most sense at a substantial discount, particularly if carpet and pet-hair pickup matter more to you than deep mopping or cutting-edge navigation.

What the S8 MaxV Ultra is—and what makes it the MaxV

The S8 MaxV Ultra is the top model in Roborock’s S8 family, not merely an S8 Pro Ultra with a higher suction number. It combines LiDAR mapping with camera and structured-light sensing, twin rubber rollers, a vibrating mop that lifts over carpet, an extending side brush and edge-mopping hardware. Its RockDock Ultra empties dust, refills the robot’s water tank, washes and dries the mop, and dispenses detergent.

The MaxV-specific package also includes the “Hello Rocky” voice assistant, remote viewing and pet-monitoring features, Reactive AI 2.0 obstacle recognition, DirTect dirt detection, and SmartPlan cleaning customization. Roborock’s S8-series comparison distinguishes the MaxV Ultra from the S8 Pro Ultra and S8 Max Ultra by features including its voice assistant and remote viewing.

Roborock advertises up to 10,000 Pa of suction. Treat that as a manufacturer specification, not a standardized cross-brand cleaning score: independent debris-pickup results and how the robot performs on your floors are more useful comparisons.

Detecting and skillfully bypassing objects with its 3D structured light technology, the robot vacuum creates detailed maps for precise navigation thanks to its PreciSense LiDAR navigation system.

What “built-in AI” means in practice

There is no single general-purpose intelligence that understands a home. “AI” here describes several distinct functions, each with limitations.

Reactive AI 2.0: spotting obstacles

A front-facing camera and structured-light sensing help the robot identify and route around objects. Roborock says it can recognize objects as small as 5 cm wide and 3 cm tall; that is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee for every object, floor, or lighting condition. The feature can help with ordinary clutter, but it does not make floor preparation unnecessary.

Independent testing is mixed. RTINGS found obstacle avoidance satisfactory rather than exceptional, with weaker results on carpet than on bare floors. TechRadar reported successful avoidance tests involving socks and cables. Taken together, those results suggest a useful safety net, not reliable protection from every thin cord, dark object, toy, or awkwardly placed item. Pet-waste avoidance can be prioritized in settings, but recognition is probabilistic: remove fresh accidents rather than trusting the robot to avoid them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The robot may photograph detected obstacles and show them on its map. That can make a missed area easier to understand, but it also means buyers should consider the camera and microphone alongside the convenience features.

  • 𝟴𝟬𝟬𝟬𝗣𝗮 𝗛𝘆𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Engineered to deliver unmatched cleaning performance, the roborock QV 35A robot vacuum with 8000Pa powerful suction effortlessly captures embedded dirt, stubborn debris, and pet hair from deep within carpets, rugs, and hard-to-reach corners, leaving every surface spotless.
  • 𝗔𝗹𝗹-𝗶𝗻-𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Designed for ultimate convenience, the advanced docking station automatically empties dust into a sealed 2.7L bag that lasts 7–9 weeks, refills the water with a 4L tank for 3552 sqft coverage, thoroughly washes mopping pads and dries them, ensuring the robot vacuum and mop always ready for the next cleaning. To maintain optimal operation, the dirty water tank should be cleaned regularly.
  • 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲-𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺: The upgraded asymmetrical side brush is SGS-certified for a 0% hair tangling rate, while the full-rubber spiral main brush effectively prevents hair and debris from wrapping around it, perfect for homes with pets or hair. Just say goodbye to hair tangles with the innovative robot vacuum.
  • 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗢𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: Equipped with the Reactive Tech system, the QV 35A robot vacuum detects and avoids obstacles like furniture, cords, and shoes with precision. It also intelligently identifies no-go zones, such as stairs or tight spaces, to prevent getting stuck and ensure uninterrupted cleaning.
  • 𝗗𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝟭𝟬𝗺𝗺 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝘁: Elevate the floor care and scrub away tough stains with two 200RPM high-speed rotating mopping pads. The 30 adjustable water levels help the robot vacuum cleaner adapt to all floor types, from delicate hardwoods to tiles. The 10mm lift feature allows it to seamlessly transition to low-pile carpets, ensuring no wet messes and complete cleaning versatility.

DirTect and SmartPlan

DirTect detects dirtier areas and can prompt extra cleaning or re-mopping. It is best understood as targeted repeat cleaning, not as a way to replace hand treatment for dried food, grease, mud, or sticky residue. RTINGS found the feature effective within its test scope, while noting that results can vary in normal homes.

SmartPlan uses information about the home and previous cleaning behavior to customize plans. Think adaptive scheduling and cleaning choices—not a conversational AI model or a guarantee that the robot will infer what you want.

Hello Rocky, remote viewing, and privacy

The built-in assistant supports hands-free commands such as starting a clean or asking for a room to be cleaned. It can be convenient when your phone is out of reach, but app control or a supported third-party voice assistant may be just as practical for many households. Roborock also lists video calling, pet snaps, pet search, and remote viewing as MaxV features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those capabilities make the camera more than a navigation sensor. Before enabling remote viewing, check the current Roborock privacy policy and the app’s camera and microphone permissions for your region. Review account security, decide whether you need the remote camera features, and disable permissions or functions you do not want to use. Do not assume storage, cloud processing, or regional behavior without checking Roborock’s current disclosures.

Vacuuming: a strong fit for mixed floors and pet hair

Hard floors

Hard-floor pickup is one of the S8 MaxV Ultra’s strongest points. RTINGS rated its hard-floor debris pickup highly, with good handling of medium and bulky debris. Fine material may take another pass, and some dust can remain along walls or in corners. The extending side brush is a useful attempt to improve edge coverage, not proof that every corner will be cleared.

Each side mop pads comes with screws, making installation very easy

Carpet and rugs

Carpet performance is good overall, though not dominant in every test. Carpet Boost raises suction on carpet, and the mop lifts up to 20 mm (2 cm) to reduce the chance of wetting ordinary rugs. TechRadar found that lift cleared all but the fluffiest rugs in its testing. Thick, shaggy rugs remain a risk, as do fine debris pressed into carpet edges or corners. Check rug behavior before relying on an unattended mixed-floor schedule.

Pet hair

The twin rubber rollers are a persuasive reason for pet owners to consider this model. RTINGS found strong pet-hair performance, including on low-pile carpet, and the rollers are relatively easy to remove for cleaning. That does not mean maintenance disappears: hair can still collect at brush ends, on the side brush, around wheels, and in filters. If pet hair on carpet is your main concern, the S8’s brush arrangement may be more appealing than newer robots with different brush designs; compare actual household needs rather than assuming the newest model is automatically better.

Mopping: good maintenance, not a substitute for scrubbing

The S8 MaxV Ultra uses Roborock’s VibraRise 3.0 system: a single vibrating mop pad, with up to 4,000 vibrations per minute in Roborock’s launch material, that can lift 20 mm over carpet. The robot can return to its dock for a 60°C hot-water mop wash, then heated-air drying. Dirt detection can trigger a repeat clean, while the extending edge-mopping hardware aims to reach farther along edges.

This setup is well suited to routine maintenance on hard floors. It is less convincing on dried-on or sticky messes. A vibrating pad does not scrub in the same way as dual rotating mop pads, and independent testing found the S8’s mopping behind newer rotating-pad designs. It may spread residue or leave a stain that needs manual attention. The edge mechanism improves reach but cannot make a round robot equivalent to hand-mopping tight corners or grout.

If mopping is your top priority, compare newer rotating-pad options such as Roborock’s Qrevo models or alternatives from Dreame, Ecovacs, and Narwal. TechRadar specifically points buyers whose priority is mopping toward a Qrevo model.

  • 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀-𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲: Brand New RockDock features a new one-piece cleaning tray that boosts mop coverage and water capacity for deeper washing and quieter operation. Combined with 212°F hot water washing, 131°F hot air drying, self-cleaning maintenance, and up to 65 days of auto dust emptying, it delivers a truly hands-free experience.

The RockDock Ultra: the strongest argument for buying

The dock is arguably more compelling than the AI branding. It automatically empties dust, refills the robot’s clean-water tank, collects dirty water, washes the mop with hot water, dries it with heated air, dispenses detergent, and cleans itself. In some markets, a compatible refill-and-drain configuration may reduce tank handling, but plumbing support and included hardware vary by market and package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Hands-free” still involves chores. With a tank version, you must refill clean water and empty dirty water. You will also need to replace dust bags or maintain the dust compartment, clean filters and sensors, inspect brushes and mop components, keep the dock clean, and replenish compatible detergent. Neglected dirty water can smell, and a large dock needs a suitable, accessible location.

App, Matter, and physical fit

The Roborock app supports multi-level maps, room and zone cleaning, no-go zones and invisible walls, schedules, cleaning order, carpet settings, mop washing and drying preferences, repeat cleaning, and maintenance alerts. The camera features and obstacle photos add more control options. Specific menu names can change with app versions, firmware, and region, so confirm the current interface for your market rather than relying on a fixed path.

Roborock announced the S8 MaxV Ultra as the first robotic vacuum to receive Matter certification in April 2024. Matter can improve smart-home interoperability, but certification does not mean that every platform exposes every Roborock feature. Available controls depend on the app, firmware, platform, and region. Check the current compatibility details for your smart-home system before buying; do not assume Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and the Roborock app will offer identical controls.

  • 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆-𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗟𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀: The innovative AdaptiLift Chassis, featuring left/right wheels and omnidirectional wheels, effortlessly navigates obstacles up to 4 cm high, including thresholds and U-shaped furniture legs. When carpets are detected, the Dual Spinning Mops and mop bracket automatically lift to prevent wetting long-pile carpets. During recharging, the main and side brushes are raised to avoid dirt transfer onto the floor, delivering a quiet and pristine mopping experience.

Physical dimensions can be decisive. Roborock’s specification sheet lists the robot at 350 × 353 × 103 mm and the dock at 409 × 419 × 470 mm. At 103 mm tall, the robot will not fit beneath furniture with less clearance. The dock also needs room and access for tank service. The listed battery is 5,200 mAh, the robot dustbin is 270 ml, its internal water tank is 100 ml, and the manufacturer lists 67 dB in balanced mode. These figures help with planning, but actual noise and coverage depend on settings and the home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before committing to a schedule, check thresholds, rug edges, loose cords, and tricky dark or reflective surfaces in the rooms it will clean. A carefully set map and no-go zones can prevent some recurring trouble, but neither changes the robot’s physical clearance or makes its object recognition infallible.

How it compares with newer choices

Model or family Consider it if… Trade-off versus the S8 MaxV Ultra
Roborock Saros 10R You want a newer Roborock with better obstacle avoidance, stronger mopping, faster recharging, or navigation suited to lower furniture. The S8 MaxV Ultra may remain more attractive for carpeted pet-hair pickup because of its twin rollers.
Roborock Qrevo Curv or Qrevo Master Rotating-pad mopping is more important than the S8’s vibrating pad, especially in a mostly hard-floor home. Compare dock features and pricing in your market; the S8’s twin rollers and mixed-floor balance may suit carpet-heavy homes better.
Dreame X50 Ultra You prioritize wet mopping, obstacle sensing, or handling a complex furniture layout. It uses a different app ecosystem, and carpet-dominant homes may favor another choice.
Dyson 360 Vis Nav Carpet cleaning is the priority and you do not need mopping or an auto-emptying dock. The cited comparison notes no mopping or self-emptying dock.
iRobot Roomba Max 705 You prioritize obstacle avoidance, pet hair, carpet performance, or the iRobot ecosystem. Consider the broader ownership and company context as well as cleaning features; it does not change the robot’s cleaning performance by itself.

These are different trade-offs, not a universal ranking. Check current regional specifications, support, prices, and package contents before comparing models.

Price and who should buy it

The S8 MaxV Ultra launched in the U.S. at a $1,799.99 MSRP in 2024. The official U.S. product page showed a $799.99 price signal against that list price, but also displayed “out of stock, coming soon” when checked for this article. Both price and availability are volatile; confirm the live listing in your country. Prices, bundles, plumbing versions, warranty terms, and detergent availability vary by market.

  • Buy it at a substantial discount if you have mixed floors, deal with pet hair—especially on carpet—and want the dock to take over much of the emptying, refilling, and mop care. It is most compelling if the robot’s height and the dock’s footprint work in your home.
  • Compare alternatives closely if you have mostly hard floors and want stronger stain removal, or if your home has lots of small objects, thin cables, or frequent clutter. Newer rotating-pad and obstacle-avoidance systems may fit those needs better.
  • Skip it if it is priced near a newer flagship and you do not specifically value its twin rollers, mature Roborock app, or dock package. Also skip it if you need a low-profile robot, have very fluffy rugs that cannot be excluded, or do not want a camera-equipped cleaner.

The S8 MaxV Ultra’s value in 2026 is not that it leads every category. It is that a mature all-in-one system can still be a strong mixed-floor and pet-hair cleaner when the price is right. Its dock automates a lot; its AI helps with specific tasks; neither eliminates maintenance or makes its mop and obstacle avoidance best-in-class.
