Short answer: Sensi Lite is the one thermostat in this group with a clearly documented sub-$100 price: its official MSRP is $89.99, and it supports Amazon Alexa. Amazon Smart Thermostat, GE Cync Smart Thermostat, Honeywell Home T5+, and Wyze Thermostat may also fit the budget, but their current new-unit prices and availability are not confirmed here. Treat them as candidates to check—not as verified under-$100 buys.
This guide is for U.S. buyers. Before ordering any smart thermostat, confirm the exact model, current price, wiring, and HVAC compatibility. A low sticker price is not a bargain if your system needs an adapter or professional work—or is incompatible.

Price rule: Count only a new thermostat’s price before tax and installation. Keep rebates separate, and do not treat used, refurbished, open-box, or incomplete listings as qualifying. Prices change; check the seller and date before purchase.

The important qualification is “most systems,” not all. Sensi says a C-wire is not needed for most installations, but heat-only and cool-only systems may require one. Check the wiring and equipment before buying, especially if you have a heat pump or an unusual configuration. The Lite also does not offer every feature available on higher-end Sensi models, such as compatibility with room sensors.
Alexa setup: Sensi requires a registered Sensi account and setup in the Sensi app, followed by linking the thermostat with Alexa. Sensi documents a setup route through its app and an Alexa-app fallback if the usual path does not work. Its Alexa setup instructions explain the process.
Four more candidates—but check the price and current status
These models are plausible options to investigate, but the available price evidence does not establish that each is currently under $100. Check a new, complete U.S. listing for the exact model before counting it toward the budget.

Amazon Smart Thermostat: for Alexa-centered homes
The Amazon-branded thermostat is an obvious candidate if Alexa is already central to your home. Still, brand familiarity is not a substitute for checking the current listing, system compatibility, and wiring requirements. Confirm that the listing is for a new unit, not a marketplace resale, and check which controls are available through Alexa and which require the manufacturer’s app or account.

GE Cync Smart Thermostat: a possible route when there is no C-wire
Cync’s support material describes Alexa compatibility and a Power Extender Kit option for installations without a C-wire. That does not make the thermostat universally compatible: the kit still has to be installed appropriately at the HVAC control board, and the equipment must match the model’s supported configurations. Start with Cync’s compatibility information and thermostat FAQs. Confirm the exact model number; similarly named products are not necessarily interchangeable.
Honeywell Home T5+: check the plus sign and the SKU
The current Honeywell Home T5+ product listing says it supports Alexa and includes a C-wire adapter. Honeywell also provides a wiring compatibility checker. The model name matters: Honeywell identifies an older T5 version without the adapter as discontinued. Do not assume an old or third-party listing for “T5” is the same product as the current T5+. Older budget roundups may name Wyze, but an old price is not evidence of current value or support. Before considering it, verify that the exact thermostat is still sold new in the U.S., supports Alexa now, has current app and security support, and comes with a clear warranty and installation guidance. If you cannot verify those points, skip it rather than buying a questionable leftover listing.
Check these things before you buy
1. Low-voltage or line-voltage?
Many smart thermostats in this price range are made for conventional 24-volt HVAC controls. Electric baseboard heaters are often line-voltage systems, and many low-voltage smart thermostats are not compatible with them. Millivolt systems and proprietary communicating equipment can also fall outside a thermostat’s support. Do not infer compatibility from the word “smart” or from a matching display.
2. What wires and equipment do you actually have?
A C-wire (common wire) supplies continuous power to many smart thermostats. Not seeing one at the wall does not automatically rule out a smart thermostat: a particular model may work without one on certain systems, or it may support an adapter. But the wire may be tucked behind the existing thermostat, absent at both ends, or not usable with the equipment. A power kit can also require access to the furnace or air-handler control board.

Photograph the existing connections and note the terminal labels, not just wire colors. Colors are not a reliable universal guide. Do not move, combine, or jumper R, RH, RC, O/B, E, or other wires based on generic instructions: the correct arrangement depends on the equipment, transformers, and thermostat design.
3. Is it a heat pump, multistage, or zoned system?
Heat pumps can use an O/B reversing-valve connection and may have auxiliary or emergency heat. Dual-fuel systems, multiple heating or cooling stages, zoning, and accessories such as humidifiers or ventilators add more compatibility questions. Use the manufacturer’s checker for the exact thermostat and system. For context, even Google says that while many 24-volt systems work with Nest, some do not and some configurations need a C-wire or Nest Power Connector; see its compatibility guidance.
4. What does Alexa integration really provide?
“Works with Alexa” generally means you can link a service, discover the thermostat in the Alexa app, and use supported voice commands or routines. Depending on the model, Alexa may let you adjust temperature, select an operating mode, or control a fan. It does not mean the thermostat has a built-in Alexa speaker, that every setting is voice-controlled, or that it works without the manufacturer’s account, app, cloud service, or an internet connection. Check the model’s current integration documentation for the commands it actually supports.
5. What is included—and what is the real cost?
Check whether the listing includes the required adapter, wall plate, and other installation parts. A low price can conceal a missing accessory, a discontinued model, or a seller whose warranty coverage is unclear. Installation labor and any extra wiring are separate costs; a product under $100 does not guarantee a completed installation under $100.

- Confirm the thermostat and system are compatible using the manufacturer’s checker.
- Turn off HVAC power at the breaker or service switch before handling wiring.
- Photograph the old thermostat’s terminals and label wires by their terminal connections.
- Verify that the system is low-voltage and that the new model supports its stages and accessories.
- Follow the instructions for the exact model. Do not improvise with unclear wiring or an adapter.
DIY installation is usually most approachable on a compatible, conventional low-voltage system with clearly identified wires. Treat a heat pump, multiple stages, unusual terminals, absent C-wire, zoning, or accessories as a reason for extra caution. If the wiring or system type is unclear, stop and contact an HVAC professional. Never assume a thermostat is safe for line-voltage wiring.

General Alexa setup and troubleshooting
The exact menus differ by model, but the usual sequence is to install and configure the thermostat in its manufacturer app, create or sign in to the required account, then add the manufacturer integration in Alexa, link accounts, discover devices, assign the thermostat to a room, and test a supported command. For Sensi, use its documented app flow or Alexa-app fallback rather than assuming every brand follows the same steps.
If Alexa finds the thermostat but commands fail, first confirm it works in the manufacturer’s app and is online. Check that the intended accounts are linked, then disable and re-enable the relevant integration and ask Alexa to rediscover devices. Check the thermostat’s device name and room assignment; duplicate or confusing names can cause commands to target the wrong device. Reconnection or a factory reset should be a last resort, because it may require setting the thermostat up again.
Sales and utility rebates are not the same as the regular price
A sale can temporarily put a model below $100. Record the price, seller, exact model, and date you see it, and check whether the item is new and complete. A utility rebate may lower your effective cost, but eligibility can depend on your ZIP code, utility, equipment, enrollment, and proof of purchase. Keep that potential saving separate from the checkout price: do not call a thermostat a sub-$100 product solely because some customers may qualify for a rebate.
For another price reference, Google’s official U.S. store lists the current Nest Thermostat at $129.99, so it does not meet a strict under-$100 rule at that listed price. A later promotion would need to be checked and dated separately; a rebate is not the regular price.
