Yes. IKEA’s Matter-compatible KAJPLATS smart bulbs began appearing for sale in the U.S. in early March 2026, ahead of the previously expected April release. Prices reported at launch started around $6 for a basic white-spectrum bulb and reached about $13 for a 1,100-lumen color model. The important catch: these bulbs use Matter over Thread, so phone-based smart-home control requires a compatible Thread Border Router—not just a Wi-Fi router or the bulb alone.
What IKEA launched in the U.S.
KAJPLATS is a family of smart bulbs, not one model. IKEA’s global announcement describes 11 variations across different socket types, brightness levels and styles, including white-spectrum and color-changing bulbs, spotlights and decorative clear-glass options. That global range does not mean every variation is currently listed or in stock at every U.S. store. Check the live IKEA U.S. smart-lighting listings for local availability.
The U.S. arrival was reported on March 6, 2026, ahead of the planned April release. IKEA’s U.S. product listing confirms at least one model is available for purchase, though store stock, delivery eligibility and prices can vary by location.

When shopping in the U.S., match the bulb to the fixture’s socket: common U.S. fittings include E26, E12 and E17. European E27 and E14 labels are not interchangeable buying instructions for a U.S. fixture. Also check whether the listing says white-spectrum or color-and-white-spectrum; not every KAJPLATS bulb changes color.

Which KAJPLATS bulb should you choose?

A verified U.S. example is the E26 KAJPLATS color-and-white-spectrum bulb, article number 306.114.62. IKEA lists it at 1,100 lumens and 8.1 watts, with a default color temperature of 2,700 K and selectable white temperatures of 2,200 K, 2,700 K, 4,000 K and 6,500 K. It supports wireless dimming and color adjustment. The remote and hub are sold separately.
Prices—and the cost of the setup
Launch-period reporting put the least expensive white-only bulb at about $6 and the 1,100-lumen color model at about $13. Reported bulb-and-BILRESA remote kits were roughly $10 for white and $15 for color. These are reported U.S. prices from the launch period, not a guarantee of today’s price; check the product listing and your local IKEA inventory before buying.

The bulb price is only the entry cost if you already own suitable smart-home equipment. IKEA’s DIRIGERA hub was listed at $119.99 on August 18, 2026. That is a substantial addition to a $6–$13 bulb, especially if you only want one light. A compatible controller and Thread Border Router you already own may avoid buying DIRIGERA, while a BILRESA remote offers physical control but is not a substitute for a full smart-home hub.
Matter is not the same as Wi-Fi: what you need
KAJPLATS bulbs use Matter over Thread. Matter is the interoperability standard that helps supported smart-home products work across platforms; Thread is the low-power wireless network these bulbs use. The bulb does not simply join ordinary Wi-Fi, and Matter compatibility by itself does not provide a controller or Thread network.

For networked phone control, IKEA says a Thread Border Router is required. You also need a compatible Matter controller/platform. IKEA recommends DIRIGERA, which it identifies as a Matter controller and bridge; a compatible third-party Matter setup may also work. IKEA lists examples of compatible ecosystems including Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey and Samsung. Actual requirements and available features depend on the specific controller and platform.
- Want IKEA Home smart app control? Plan on DIRIGERA or another compatible arrangement supported by IKEA; the product page specifies the Thread Border Router requirement for phone control.
- Already have Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings or Home Assistant? Check the specific hub or device for both Matter-controller and Thread Border Router capability. A speaker, app or Matter label alone does not prove it has Thread.
- Want a physical button? A compatible BILRESA remote can provide basic lighting control, but it does not deliver the same app, automation and ecosystem functions as a hub.
DIRIGERA connects to the home network and is set up with the IKEA Home smart app. IKEA lists iOS 16.4 or later and Android 10 or later for the hub’s app requirements. See the DIRIGERA product page for current details.

Setup and pairing
The exact pairing steps depend on whether you choose IKEA Home smart, Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or another controller; there is no universal menu path. In general:
- Install the correct socket and brightness version in a compatible fixture, then switch the fixture on.
- Make sure your Matter controller and Thread Border Router are online and operating.
- Start adding a device in the chosen app or hub. Use the bulb’s supplied Matter QR code or pairing code when requested.
- Assign the bulb to a room, then test on/off, dimming and the color or white-temperature controls that model supports.
- If you want it in more than one ecosystem, use the platform’s supported Matter multi-admin sharing flow rather than repeatedly resetting the bulb.
The IKEA app guides users through setup with DIRIGERA and supports app, remote, voice, room, group and scene controls. What a third-party app exposes may differ: Matter support does not guarantee identical color controls, scenes, firmware handling or automations everywhere.

If pairing fails or the bulb drops offline
Try to identify whether the issue is power, Thread coverage, the controller or the Matter pairing before repeatedly resetting the bulb:
- Confirm the wall switch is on, the bulb is fully seated and the controller actually supports Thread Border Router functionality.
- Bring the bulb and controller closer together during commissioning; check Thread coverage if the bulb later becomes unreachable.
- Update the IKEA Home smart app, controller software, hub firmware and bulb firmware where updates are available.
- If a previous setup stalled, remove stale or incomplete Matter pairings from the relevant app before trying again.
- Power-cycle an unreachable bulb and retry once the network is stable. Avoid repeated factory resets until you know which part of the setup failed.
- If problems persist, contact IKEA support or use the applicable return process.
Reliability reports are mixed, not conclusive. IKEA product-page reviews and launch coverage include user reports of Thread dropouts, delayed response and color-rendering problems; those are anecdotal reports, not controlled testing. WIRED’s hands-on coverage was more positive. Treat neither individual experience as a guarantee for your own network.
Who should consider KAJPLATS?
These bulbs make the most sense if you want inexpensive smart lighting, have an IKEA DIRIGERA hub or compatible Matter-over-Thread setup already, and can match the bulb’s socket and capabilities to the fixture. They are also appealing if you want physical IKEA remotes or plan to add several affordable lights.
Think twice if you expect a single bulb to connect directly to Wi-Fi and work from a phone with no controller, if you need premium lighting effects, or if you cannot tolerate some setup troubleshooting. For a buyer starting from zero, the cost of a hub can outweigh the low bulb price. Confirm the controller requirement and total setup cost before ordering.
