Samsung called the newly combined organization the DX Division, short for Device eXperience. Its mobile business within DX was separately renamed the MX Business, or Mobile eXperience. The changes were announced in December 2021; they were corporate reorganizations, not a rebrand of Samsung products.
DX is the larger division; MX is the mobile business
The names are easy to confuse, but they refer to different levels of Samsung’s organization:
- DX Division means Device eXperience Division. It is the larger organization formed by combining Samsung Electronics’ former Consumer Electronics (CE) and IT & Mobile Communications (IM) divisions.
- MX Business means Mobile eXperience Business. It is the mobile business within DX, not the name for the combined mobile, appliance and electronics division.
- DS means Device Solutions, a separate Samsung Electronics division associated with semiconductor-related operations.
Samsung announced the DX name on December 12, 2021. Two days earlier, on December 10, the company announced that its Mobile Communications business would be renamed MX. Samsung’s DX announcement and MX announcement set out those names and dates.

The reorganization combined Samsung’s former CE and IM divisions. CE covered consumer-electronics operations such as displays and appliances; IM covered IT and mobile communications. Samsung’s 2022 business report describes the CE-and-IM merger into DX.

At the time DX was named, Samsung listed these constituent businesses:
- Visual Display, including TVs and displays
- Digital Appliances, including home appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners
- MX, covering Galaxy phones and other mobile products such as tablets and wearables
- Health & Medical Equipment
- Networks
That scope is broader than “mobile and home appliances”: TVs, medical equipment and network equipment were also included. The list reflects Samsung’s December 2021 announcement, rather than a claim that every later organizational detail has remained unchanged.

Why did Samsung choose the DX name?
Samsung said the name was meant to put greater emphasis on the experience customers have across products and services, rather than treating phones, TVs and appliances only as separate categories. The company described the restructuring as a way to pursue stronger synergies, coordinate hardware, software and services more closely, and build more integrated experiences.
Those are Samsung’s stated aims, not proof that every device became interoperable or that the restructuring produced a particular measurable benefit. The name alone does not mean all Samsung products use one operating system, work with every other Samsung device, or are developed as a single product line.

What does DX mean for Samsung customers?
The announcement changed Samsung’s internal organization and business names; it did not announce a consumer-facing product rebrand. Galaxy phones did not become “DX phones,” and Samsung appliances did not become a single product line with them. The mobile operation remained MX, while Digital Appliances and Visual Display remained distinct businesses within the broader DX organization.
Customers would continue to encounter product and service names such as Galaxy, Bespoke, SmartThings and Samsung TV. If you are checking whether a particular appliance works with a phone or smart-home service, verify compatibility for the exact model and region; the DX reorganization is not a compatibility guarantee.

The short version: DX, MX and DS
- DX — Device eXperience: the combined division formed from CE and IM, encompassing mobile, consumer electronics and the other listed businesses.
- MX — Mobile eXperience: the mobile business within DX.
- DS — Device Solutions: a separate Samsung Electronics division, not part of the DX name.
Samsung’s later materials continue to document the DX and MX terminology; its sustainability overview distinguishes DX from DS, and its 2025 half-year interim report provides a later reference for Samsung’s business terminology.
