The Samsung HW-Q990B is an 11.1.4-channel soundbar system with a main bar, wireless subwoofer and two wireless rear speakers. To get it working well, position all four units with their drivers unobstructed, connect the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the bar’s HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC) port, and configure the TV to pass multichannel audio. Then check the wireless links, update firmware and verify that the soundbar actually receives Dolby Atmos when you play Atmos content.
This guide covers setup for Samsung and other TVs, external players and consoles, SmartThings, calibration, sound modes and common faults. TV menus and SmartThings features can vary by model, software version and region.
Before you begin: identify the system and its parts
The HW-Q990B is a 2022-generation Samsung system. Its 11.1.4 configuration means 11 main and surround channels, one subwoofer channel and four up-firing height channels. It does not mean every source will use every speaker: the mix, playback device and selected sound mode all affect what you hear. The upward-firing drivers also depend on having a reasonably clear path to the ceiling. See Samsung’s Q990B specification sheet.

If buying used or open-box, confirm that both rear speakers, the subwoofer, their power cables, remote and any needed mounting parts are present. “Wireless” describes the audio link between components, not their power: the subwoofer and rear speakers still need outlets.

Before installation, check that the TV has an HDMI ARC or eARC port and that the intended source devices can deliver the formats you want. Have a suitable HDMI cable available. Samsung’s manual recommends a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet; a reliable, appropriately long cable is preferable to an expensive specialty cable. Find the correct manual and region-specific firmware on Samsung’s Q990B support page.
Place the soundbar, subwoofer and rear speakers
Soundbar
- Center the bar beneath the TV, aligned with the screen and the main seat.
- Keep it forward and clear of cabinet edges so the front, side and top-firing drivers are not blocked. Avoid a closed cabinet.
- If wall-mounting, leave clearance above the bar for its up-firing drivers and ensure the display remains visible. Check that the bar does not block the TV’s infrared receiver or picture.
Subwoofer
Start near the TV along the front wall, with open space around the cabinet. Do not begin by wedging it into a tight corner or cabinet: that can make bass boomy or uneven. If bass sounds weak or exaggerated at the seat, try a few positions along the front or side wall. Room position can change bass substantially, and simply making it louder does not necessarily make it more balanced.
Rear speakers
- Put the left and right units behind or just to either side of the main seating area, keeping the correct channel on each side.
- Orient them as shown in the Q990B manual, with their upward-firing openings clear and the speaker faces directed toward the seating area.
- Avoid enclosing them in shelves or pressing them flush against a wall. Stands can help when furniture or a sofa-against-wall layout makes placement difficult.
If the sofa is against the back wall, the speakers may have to sit beside the listeners rather than well behind them. Move them slightly forward if practical and avoid expecting ideal separation from a compromised position. Samsung describes the rear units as up-firing speakers intended to project sound above and around listeners; clear placement matters to that effect. The specification sheet provides product details, while the manual’s diagrams show the intended orientation.

HDMI ARC/eARC is the preferred TV connection for a full-featured setup. Connect the TV port labelled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC to the soundbar port labelled HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC). The names matter: a regular TV HDMI input will not provide the ARC audio return connection.
- Turn off the TV and soundbar while connecting the HDMI cable.
- Connect the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the Q990B’s HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC) port.
- Turn both devices on. If the bar does not switch automatically, choose D.IN or TV ARC as its source.
- On the TV, set sound output to the soundbar or receiver and enable HDMI-CEC, which may be needed for device control and ARC operation. Brand names include Samsung Anynet+, LG Simplink and Sony BRAVIA Sync.
- If the TV supports eARC, enable it. Set digital audio output to Pass Through, Bitstream or the equivalent when you want the TV to send a multichannel format through rather than downmixing to stereo PCM. Menu labels and appropriate choices vary by TV and source.
For compatible Samsung TVs, the manual gives this example: Home → Menu → Settings → All Settings → Sound → Expert Settings → HDMI-eARC Mode → Auto. Other Samsung software versions and other brands may use different paths. The Q990B manual recommends eARC where available.
ARC and eARC in practice
eARC offers greater bandwidth and is generally preferable for lossless and higher-bandwidth audio formats when the TV, source and content support them. ARC can carry common Dolby Digital formats and, in some setups, compressed Atmos, but capabilities depend on the devices and the route the audio takes. An Atmos label in a streaming app is not proof that the soundbar is receiving Atmos. Optical can be a fallback for basic TV audio, but it is not the preferred connection for an Atmos-focused system.

Choose how to connect consoles and other sources
There are two useful HDMI layouts. Choose based on your TV’s audio pass-through and video capabilities, not on a single universal rule.

Route the source through the TV
Source device → TV HDMI input
TV HDMI ARC/eARC → Q990B HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC)This is often the simplest layout and can preserve the TV’s video features, provided the TV can pass through the source’s audio format. Check that it supports the required audio pass-through and the source’s resolution, refresh rate and HDR format.
Connect the source to the soundbar first

Q990B HDMI TO TV → TV HDMI ARC/eARCThe Q990B has HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 inputs. Direct connection can help if the TV does not correctly pass through Atmos or multichannel audio. Before using it for a console or high-end player, check the soundbar’s video passthrough against the device’s needs—such as 4K/120 Hz, VRR, ALLM, HDR and HDR10+. If a video feature is lost, try routing the source through a compatible TV input instead.
Optical fallback
TV optical output → Q990B DIGITAL AUDIO IN (OPTICAL)Optical is available if HDMI ARC/eARC is not working or the TV lacks it, but it is a limited fallback for this system and is less suitable for Atmos. See the manual’s connection instructions.
Power on and check the wireless components
- Unpack and place all four main units before connecting power; remove protective film and check that no grille or up-firing opening is blocked.
- Connect power to the soundbar, subwoofer and both rear speakers.
- Turn on the TV and soundbar, then allow time for the wireless units to link automatically.
- Check the status indicators on the subwoofer and rear units. If a unit does not link, use the manual’s manual-pairing procedure rather than repeatedly power-cycling the whole system.
Keep the wireless speakers within a sensible range of the bar and away from avoidable obstructions or sources of interference. If the used system is missing proprietary wireless components or a required power cable, replacement may be difficult; confirm completeness before purchase.

Add the soundbar in SmartThings and check firmware
SmartThings can provide supported network, calibration and sound controls. Install the app on a compatible phone, sign in or create a Samsung account if prompted, and connect the phone to the Wi-Fi network you intend to use. In the app, add a device and follow the discovery and network prompts. Rename the bar if you have several Samsung devices, then check for a firmware update and the controls available for your model.

App screens and features can change, and availability can depend on country, account, phone operating system and soundbar firmware. If the app cannot find the Q990B, check Bluetooth and local-network permissions, confirm the phone is on the intended Wi-Fi network, and retry discovery near the bar. You can still use the remote and physical connections if you do not use the app, although some convenient setup controls may be unavailable.
Update through SmartThings if it offers an update. If network updating fails or the bar cannot be added, consult Samsung’s support page for USB firmware and the matching upgrade instructions. Samsung’s UK support listing includes version 1010.0, dated January 9, 2023; that is a regional listing, not proof of the latest release for every hardware suffix or country. Download only from Samsung, confirm the file matches your exact model and region, and follow its USB formatting and update steps. Do not interrupt power during an update. If the bar remains unresponsive, use Samsung’s documented recovery guidance or contact service rather than repeatedly reinstalling firmware.
Run SpaceFit Sound+ after placement
SpaceFit Sound+ is Samsung’s room-analysis and sound-calibration feature, including bass adjustment. Run it once the bar, subwoofer and rears are in their final positions, in a quiet room. If the app asks for a listening position, use the main seat. Calibration is a starting point rather than a guarantee that every room or seat is corrected.

Available controls depend on the TV and firmware. Afterward, compare on and off with familiar dialogue and bass passages at normal listening volume rather than moving speakers during calibration and treating the result as final. Pick a sound mode for the content
- Standard: A useful starting point when you want less processing and a closer presentation of the source mix, especially for stereo music. Two-channel content may not use every speaker prominently.
- Adaptive Sound: Analyzes content and adjusts presentation. It can help with mixed TV viewing or dialogue, but may be less predictable with music.
- Surround: Expands sound across more of the system. Try it when you want a more enveloping effect; it changes the character of stereo material.
- Game Mode Pro: Intended for games. Judge it with your own console for positional sound and latency, while confirming the console’s output format and video path.
- Voice Enhance: Try when speech is hard to follow.
- Night Mode: Reduces disruptive bass and dynamic peaks for quieter listening.
There is no single best mode for every source. A sound mode changes processing and speaker distribution; it is separate from channel-level balance, tone controls and SpaceFit room compensation. Independent testing by RTINGS describes the Q990B as broadly suitable for TV, movies, music and dialogue-heavy content, with extensive sound controls; those are review findings, not a guarantee for every room.
Adjust channel levels without overcorrecting
Begin with the channel levels at their defaults. Listen from the main seat at ordinary volume, then change one group at a time:

- If dialogue is difficult to understand, raise the center channel slightly and compare. Check Voice Enhance and the source mix before making a large adjustment.
- If rear or rear-height effects are genuinely too quiet in a passage that should contain them, raise those levels modestly. Do not set them to maximum just because Atmos is enabled.
- Adjust subwoofer level and bass separately. If bass is uneven or boomy, try repositioning the subwoofer before turning it up.
Some films and programs contain little rear-channel activity in a given scene, so quiet rears are not automatically a fault. Recheck the balance with familiar content at normal listening level; a setting that seems helpful at very low volume may be excessive when played louder.
Verify Dolby Atmos instead of assuming it
- Choose a known Atmos title or test source, and confirm your subscription tier, app and playback device support Atmos.
- Check that the source is configured for Atmos or bitstream output as applicable. On the TV, use eARC and pass-through/bitstream where supported; avoid an output setting that downmixes the source to stereo PCM.
- Play the content, then use the Q990B remote’s information function or front display to check the incoming format. When Atmos is active, the display shows DOLBY ATMOS.
- If it does not appear, test another known Atmos source. That helps distinguish a title, app or TV pass-through limitation from a soundbar connection problem.
The manual notes that Atmos requires supporting content and identifies the front-display confirmation. An “Adaptive” or “Surround” mode name alone does not establish that the incoming signal is Atmos. The TV, source device, app, cable and output settings all affect the result.
Practical starting points for movies, TV, music and gaming

Console output may be Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital or multichannel PCM depending on the console, game, TV and connection. PCM can be appropriate in a gaming configuration, but it may also prevent Atmos or another bitstream format from reaching the bar in a particular signal chain. Test the actual format and features you need rather than assuming PCM or bitstream is always best.

For Bluetooth, press PAIR on the Q990B remote to enter Bluetooth pairing mode, then select the soundbar in the phone or tablet’s Bluetooth list. Bluetooth is convenient, but playback is normally stereo. Wi-Fi and AirPlay options depend on region and device ecosystem. Google Assistant and Chromecast availability is also region-specific; check local support rather than assuming those features are available everywhere. For music, compare Standard with Surround or Adaptive: the latter modes can spread the presentation but alter the recording’s original balance.
Troubleshooting: start with the signal path
No TV sound
- Verify the cable runs from the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC) port.
- Set the bar to D.IN or TV ARC, and select the soundbar as the TV’s audio output.
- Enable HDMI-CEC and, if supported, eARC. If the TV does not show TV ARC, check the port and cable before changing other settings.
- Check the TV’s digital audio output. Use pass-through or bitstream for multichannel audio when supported; PCM stereo may limit what reaches the bar.
- Restart the devices: turn off the TV, soundbar and source, then power on the TV, soundbar and source in that order.
Atmos does not appear
Confirm the title, subscription, app and playback device support Atmos; check that the TV is passing through the format; enable eARC if available; and make sure the source has not been set to stereo PCM. Test a second source. If routing a source through the TV fails, try connecting it to HDMI 1 or HDMI 2 on the Q990B, provided that preserves the video features you need.

Check power and wireless-link indicators, confirm the components are paired and correctly placed, and test content with known surround activity. Review the selected sound mode and channel levels. A quiet scene or stereo source may not send much sound to the rears; judge the system using known multichannel content before concluding that a unit has failed.

Wireless dropouts
- Power off the system and unplug the affected components and soundbar for several minutes.
- Reconnect the soundbar, subwoofer and rear speakers, allowing time for the links to return.
- Temporarily move the affected unit closer to the bar to test for distance or obstruction problems.
- Check for an available firmware update and use the manual’s pairing procedure if the link does not recover.
- If the same component repeatedly drops out, contact Samsung service; persistent faults may indicate a hardware problem.
Dialogue is difficult to hear
Try a small center-level increase, Voice Enhance, or a comparison between Adaptive and Standard. Check that furniture is not blocking the center of the bar and that TV processing is not worsening the mix. Night Mode can reduce loud effects that mask speech, though it also changes dynamics.
Bass is boomy or weak
Move the subwoofer to a different position along the front or side wall, then rerun SpaceFit if needed. Try reducing the subwoofer level before changing overall bass tone. Check more than one familiar recording: room position can make bass uneven at a particular seat even when the subwoofer is working.
Lip-sync is wrong
Check the TV’s audio delay and the soundbar’s audio-sync adjustment, then compare the TV-routed and direct-to-soundbar source paths. Game Mode or other processing can affect timing. Bluetooth can introduce extra latency, so use HDMI for TV and gaming if synchronization matters.

SmartThings cannot find the bar
Check Bluetooth and local-network permissions, confirm the phone is on the intended Wi-Fi network, and retry close to the soundbar. If discovery still fails, use the remote and physical connections for basic operation and consult Samsung’s regional support guidance for app and firmware compatibility.
Buying a Q990B now: what to check
The Q990B is an older premium system, not Samsung’s latest Q990-series generation. Later Q990C, Q990D and Q990F models exist; the Q990F has an official product page in Canada, but that does not establish availability or pricing in every market. Compare actual local price, condition, warranty and HDMI/video requirements rather than relying on a historical launch price or model letter alone.
For a used or open-box Q990B, verify that the soundbar, subwoofer and both rear speakers work together; check for all power cables, remote and included mounting accessories; test HDMI and wireless operation; and confirm that Samsung service and firmware support are available for the regional model suffix. Missing wireless components can make an apparently cheap system an expensive or impractical purchase. The Samsung support page is a starting point for regional documentation and firmware. If you are comparing alternatives, the RTINGS Q990B review describes the Q930B as a lower-cost alternative with fewer channels; newer Q990 models may offer a longer support horizon, but their local price and features need checking.
