Short answer: A HEPA filter alone will not remove nitrogen dioxide (NO₂). Look for a purifier with substantial gas-phase media—such as activated carbon or chemically impregnated sorbents—but treat it as backup, not a fix for a combustion source. A properly outdoor-vented range hood, safe and well-maintained appliances, and other source-control steps should come first. There is no widely used consumer NO₂ equivalent to particle CADR, so product claims are difficult to compare directly.
Why indoor nitrogen dioxide needs a different kind of purifier
NO₂ is a gas produced by combustion, not an airborne particle. Common indoor sources include natural-gas or propane cooking, unvented gas or kerosene heaters, fireplaces and wood stoves, vehicle exhaust entering from an attached garage, and outdoor traffic pollution. Combustion-related wildfire pollution can also affect indoor air. Exposure varies with the appliance, room size, how long it runs, ventilation, and how the space is used; having a gas stove does not by itself tell you what your exposure is.
HEPA filters are designed to capture particles. They may reduce smoke particles and other particulate pollution, but ordinary HEPA filtration does not capture NO₂ gas. EPA explains that gas pollutants require special media, such as activated carbon or other sorbents. A purifier described as “True HEPA with carbon” is not automatically an effective NO₂ purifier: the carbon may be only a thin sheet intended mainly for odors.

EPA also notes that gas-removal ratings are not as widely established as particle ratings. The AHAM directory’s tobacco-smoke, dust, and pollen CADR values are particle measures, not NO₂ clean-air delivery rates. What can remove NO₂?
Gas-phase filters use porous or chemically active media to capture or react with gases. Common examples include activated carbon, impregnated carbon, activated alumina, and potassium-permanganate-treated media. The relevant distinction is not just the word “carbon,” but the media’s composition, quantity, depth, airflow, and how long air contacts it.
Adsorption holds molecules on the surface of a porous material. Its capacity is finite, and performance can change with humidity, airflow, the mixture of pollutants, and the amount already captured. Chemisorption uses chemically treated media to bind or transform target gases. It can be a more purposeful approach for certain reactive or inorganic gases, but the label does not guarantee a particular NO₂ removal rate.
For any product claiming NO₂ removal, ask for direct NO₂ test data: the inlet concentration, airflow, test duration, humidity, removal rate or gas clean-air delivery rate, and whether by-products were measured. A VOC test does not prove NO₂ performance. Neither does odor reduction. EPA cautions that the effectiveness of consumer units with small amounts of activated carbon may be unknown, and that gas performance depends on the gas and test conditions.

Shortlist: options with disclosed gas-phase media
This is a confidence-ranked shortlist based on disclosed gas media and the available product information—not a laboratory head-to-head test. The NO₂-specific claims below are manufacturer claims unless noted otherwise. Product prices and availability can change; verify them on the linked U.S. product pages before buying.
1. IQAir GCX ChemiSorber: specialized premium option
The GCX ChemiSorber is the clearest fit in this shortlist for someone seeking a dedicated, substantial gas-phase system. IQAir describes it as containing 32 pounds of granular impregnated alumina for inorganic and chemical pollutant control, alongside particle filtration. Its technical specifications list maximum airflow of about 370 cfm and weight of about 73 pounds with filters; check the exact model and current specifications before purchase. The U.S. product page listed it at $2,299.99 in the information reviewed for this guide. See IQAir’s product page and GCX technical specifications.
Important limit: substantial chemisorption media is evidence of gas-phase design, not proof of a specific household NO₂ reduction. The available product information does not establish an independent, current NO₂-removal percentage. This unit is bulky and expensive, and is likely excessive for occasional cooking odors or a minor concern that can be addressed with ventilation.

2. Oransi TrueCarbon 150C, 200C, or 270C: lower-cost carbon-heavy options
Oransi explicitly lists nitrogen dioxide among the gases its TrueCarbon range is intended to remove. The models disclose 3.2 pounds of carbon media. Their stated room coverage is 275 square feet for the 150C, 375 square feet for the 200C, and 475 square feet for the 270C. These coverage figures are manufacturer-stated; check the underlying method and your room conditions rather than treating them as an NO₂ guarantee. Oransi says the range uses no ionizer or ozone-generating technology.
Prices were inconsistent across Oransi pages: the comparison page showed $229.99 for the 150C, $259.99 for the 200C, and $295.99 for the 270C; individual product pages showed $229.99, $369, and $419 respectively. Treat these as observed price signals, not fixed prices. Review the TrueCarbon comparison and the current 150C, 200C, and 270C pages.
Oransi says its gas-removal claims are supported by AHAM AC-4 laboratory results, but the product information available here does not establish whether the published test directly measured NO₂, or under what concentration and conditions. These are more accessible carbon-heavy choices than the IQAir GCX models, but buyers who require independently published, molecule-specific NO₂ evidence should request the test report before relying on them for that purpose.

3. IQAir GCX MultiGas XE: broad-spectrum premium alternative
IQAir describes the GCX MultiGas XE as combining 22 pounds of carbon with alumina pellets impregnated with potassium permanganate, plus particle filtration. The U.S. product page listed it at $2,499.99 in the information reviewed. It may suit a buyer addressing a mixture of gases and particles, but broader-spectrum positioning does not establish that it removes NO₂ better than the ChemiSorber. 4. Ordinary HEPA purifiers: for particles, not a proven NO₂ fix
A conventional HEPA purifier may be useful for smoke particles, dust, pollen, and other particle pollution. A small carbon layer may also reduce some odors. Unless the unit has substantial, specified gas-phase media and relevant NO₂ evidence, do not buy it on the assumption that its HEPA label, high smoke CADR, app, or VOC claim means it removes NO₂. A purifier’s ability to detect NO₂, if it has a suitable sensor, is also separate from its ability to remove it.

How to choose without being misled by a rating
- Confirm gas media. Look for the media type and a clear description of its role. “Carbon filter included” alone is weak evidence.
- Compare disclosed quantity and construction. A thin carbon sheet, several pounds of loose carbon, a deep bed, and impregnated chemisorption media are not equivalent. There is no reliable consumer rule converting pounds of media into a guaranteed room-level NO₂ reduction.
- Ask for direct NO₂ testing. Request the test report and conditions, including concentration, humidity, airflow, duration, removal performance, and any by-product measurements. Do not substitute VOC data or a general “chemical removal” claim.
- Check airflow and intended room. Air must pass through the sorbent at a useful rate and with enough contact time. Room-size claims are not NO₂ ratings. Particle CADR can help compare particle cleaning, but it is not a gas CADR.
- Check replacement media and operating instructions. Sorbents have finite capacity. Replacement timing depends on pollutant concentration, humidity, airflow, gas mixture, and use; a timer-based indicator may not measure remaining NO₂ capacity. Confirm cartridge availability and cost for the exact model.
- Plan to run it when pollution occurs. Cooking-related NO₂ can rise without visible smoke. An automatic mode triggered by a particle sensor may not respond to a gas-only event. Use the manufacturer’s manual to set a suitable continuous or event-based operating schedule.
- Avoid intentional ozone generation. Do not choose an ozone generator, ionizer, or plasma feature as an NO₂ remedy. EPA warns against ozone generators for occupied spaces, and its technical summary notes that some ionizers and electrostatic devices can produce ozone and nitrogen oxides. CARB certification addresses device-related ozone requirements; it does not certify NO₂ removal. See CARB’s certified-device list.
Control the source before upgrading the purifier
If cooking or another appliance is generating NO₂, source control usually matters more than adding a portable unit. Use a range hood that exhausts outdoors, run it while cooking and for a while afterward, and use rear burners when practical if the hood captures them effectively. A recirculating hood may help with some particles and odors, but it is not equivalent to exhausting combustion products outside.

When outdoor conditions permit, use windows or mechanical ventilation to dilute indoor pollutants. Do not open windows automatically during a traffic or wildfire pollution event if doing so would bring in more pollution. Have combustion appliances inspected and maintained; ensure fireplaces and wood stoves vent properly. Do not use a gas oven or stovetop to heat a home. If a gas stove is a persistent source and replacement is feasible, induction cooking removes that combustion source from cooking. For attached garages, avoid idling vehicles and address pathways that allow exhaust to enter living space.
EPA’s Indoor airPLUS specifications treat NO₂ as a gaseous pollutant and recognize adsorbent or chemisorbent media as gas-phase controls. That does not make portable filtration a substitute for properly vented combustion appliances or repairs. Persistent, high, or unexplained readings warrant investigation of the source; do not use a purifier to justify continued use of an unsafe or unvented appliance. Use a monitor to investigate, not to declare the problem solved
An NO₂ monitor can help identify patterns, but readings depend on sensor type, detection limit, calibration, placement, and cross-sensitivity. Follow the monitor manufacturer’s instructions. Place it near the area of concern without putting it directly above a burner, where heat or a concentrated plume may distort the comparison.

On separate, similar occasions, compare cooking with the hood off and on, then compare the purifier off and on while holding other conditions as steady as possible. Record peaks and how quickly readings fall afterward. Repeat the comparisons if practical. This is an observational household comparison, not a controlled laboratory test: it cannot establish a purifier’s certified removal rate or prove that exposure is safe. Check that the monitor actually measures NO₂; a general air-quality display or PM sensor may not.
When a purifier is—and is not—the right purchase
- Consider a gas-phase purifier when source control and ventilation are already being addressed and you want supplemental filtration, or when outdoor gaseous pollution can enter your home and ventilation must be managed carefully.
- Consider the premium chemisorption category when the need is serious enough to justify a large, costly unit and you have checked the manufacturer’s media and testing claims. Seek direct NO₂ data before treating it as a dependable control.
- Consider a carbon-heavy unit for a lower-cost experiment with disclosed gas media, while recognizing that the manufacturer’s NO₂ claim is not the same as independently verified performance in your room.
- Do not buy a purifier as the sole response to suspected unsafe combustion, a malfunctioning appliance, an unvented heater, or persistently high readings. Request appliance inspection, ventilation improvements, or an indoor-air-quality assessment.
