“Something went wrong” is a generic symptom, not a single Google Nest error code. It can be caused by a temporary Google service problem, your network or router, an offline display, a Google Home app or account issue, damaged configuration, outdated software, or failing hardware. Check the scope of the problem before factory-resetting anything.
The safest order is: check for an outage, test the internet, reboot the display and router, update the Google Home app, identify whether voice, media, smart-home control or setup is failing, and only then consider a factory reset.
First identify where the error appears
The remedy depends on the symptom:
- After “Hey Google”: test basic requests such as “what time is it?” or “set a one-minute timer.”
- Only with music, radio, YouTube or another service: the Assistant may work while that particular service or account integration is failing.
- Only when controlling smart-home devices: check the linked service and whether the devices themselves are online.
- During setup in Google Home: treat it as an app, Wi-Fi, permissions or account-linking problem.
- The display is missing from the Home app: investigate connectivity, account association or a corrupted configuration.
- Photos, clocks or camera feeds still appear: that does not prove every Google service is healthy; different functions can use different services or cached data.
Also note whether the touchscreen works, whether the microphone switch is muted, whether the Home app works on the same phone, and whether other Google speakers or displays fail at the same time.
Could Google Home or Nest be down?
- Check Google’s official Nest status page.
- Ask another Google Home or Nest device for a simple fact. If several devices fail together, suspect a shared service, account, router or ISP problem rather than several broken displays.
- With cellular data temporarily disabled, open
google.comon a phone connected to the same Wi-Fi. - If practical, test the display through a mobile hotspot. Working on the hotspot but not at home points toward the router, DNS, ISP or Wi-Fi configuration.
Status reporting can lag, and a clean page does not rule out a regional or newly emerging incident. Google recommends checking both internet access and Nest service status in its connectivity guidance and notes that status updates may be delayed in its service-status information. User reports can indicate symptoms, but they do not by themselves prove a Google-wide outage.

Safe fixes to try first
1. Wait briefly and retry
If the failure began suddenly or affects multiple devices, wait several minutes. Repeated resets during a service incident can erase your configuration without fixing the cause.
2. Reboot the display
- Unplug the Nest display.
- Wait at least 10 seconds.
- Plug it back in and allow it to finish booting.
This is Google’s standard reboot method for setup failures; see the official setup troubleshooting steps.
3. Restart the modem and router
Power-cycle the networking equipment, wait until the internet is restored, then test the display. Check whether the Wi-Fi name or password changed, whether the display is on a guest network, and whether the ISP is having problems.

4. Update and restart Google Home
Open the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, search for Google Home, install any available update, force-close the app and reopen it. If setup still fails, try another phone or tablet signed in to the same Google Account.
5. Test several commands and another device
Try a clock, weather request and timer, then test another speaker or display. One-device failures point toward that device’s state, configuration, firmware, microphone or hardware. Home-wide failures point toward a common service, account, router or ISP.
If setup or Wi-Fi is the problem
During setup, keep the phone on the Wi-Fi network you want the display to use, confirm the password, and keep the phone approximately 5–20 feet from the display. Stay close to the router when selecting the network. The phone must support 5 GHz if you are configuring a 5 GHz network. Try another phone or tablet if the first device cannot complete setup. These distances and checks come from Google’s setup guidance.

Also investigate client isolation, captive-portal logins, unusual DNS filtering, separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, weak signal and guest-network restrictions. Switching to 2.4 GHz can be a useful experiment in some homes, but Google does not state that it universally fixes this message.

A reset can clear corrupted configuration or resolve a device that remains linked to another account. It cannot repair a Google-side outage, ISP failure or defective hardware. Google says it is irreversible, erases device data, disconnects the display from home members and can delete associated data such as Nest Hub Max video history. It cannot be performed by voice or from the Home app. Save important information first: device name, room, Wi-Fi details, routines, integrations and Max video history.

Nest Hub and Nest Hub (2nd gen)
On the back, press and hold both volume buttons together for about 10 seconds. The display announces that it is resetting.
Nest Hub Max
Save required video history, remove the Max from the Google Home app, then hold both rear volume buttons for about 10 seconds. After any reset, complete setup again in Google Home. See Google’s factory-reset instructions for the current procedure.
If the error returns after resetting
A reset that helps for only a few hours is not proof that the reset solved the cause. Test the display on a hotspot and, if possible, another known-good Wi-Fi network. Record the exact date and time, model, firmware version, Home app version, router and network type, which functions fail, whether other devices fail, and whether the display disappears from the app. This evidence is more useful to support than “it stopped working.”

When to contact Google
Use Google Nest support when the display cannot complete a clean setup after reset, fails on multiple known-good networks, fails with another setup phone, repeatedly disappears from Home, or has abnormal power, boot-loop, touchscreen, microphone or Wi-Fi behavior. A persistent generic message alone does not prove the device is dead; escalate after cloud, account and network causes have been tested.
Replacement is sensible only after that diagnosis. A new Nest Hub or Hub Max still depends on the same Google Home account and cloud services, so it will not fix a home-wide outage, account problem or router failure. Warranty and replacement options vary by country, model, purchase date and warranty status.
