The rumored 2026 Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini refreshes may have more in common than a new wireless chip. Earlier reporting pointed to an Apple-designed combined Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth chip, potentially bringing Wi‑Fi 6E to both devices. More recent reports instead frame the products as parts of Apple’s delayed AI-powered Siri and smart-home strategy.
Neither device had been officially announced in the sources reviewed as of August 18, 2026. The safest expectation is therefore a reported fall 2026 launch—not a confirmed release date or specification.
What the two products reportedly have in common
There are two answers, depending on whether you mean the original hardware rumor or Apple’s broader product strategy.

- Original hardware rumor: both devices could use an Apple-designed combined Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth chip, possibly with Wi‑Fi 6E support.
- More relevant 2026 connection: both are reportedly being updated to support Apple’s next-generation Siri and a more capable Apple Home platform.
The wireless-chip theory came from a January 8, 2025 report by MacRumors. By 2026, reporting from 9to5Mac and MacRumors placed greater emphasis on delayed Siri and Apple Intelligence features.

How the story changed
The original expectation was that new Apple TV and HomePod mini models would arrive in 2025. That did not happen. Current reports now point to later in 2026, with both products apparently being held for—or designed around—a new Siri rollout.
That timing would make sense for Apple’s smart-home ambitions. An Apple TV could supply a substantially faster processor and remain connected to a television and home network. A HomePod mini could provide microphones, voice responses and room-level control. A future Apple smart-home hub could then provide a display and a central interface.
However, the division of work between the Apple TV, HomePod mini, iPhone and Apple’s cloud services is not known. A faster chip does not prove that either product will run Apple Intelligence locally.
Expected Apple TV 4K changes
Reports describe the next Apple TV primarily as a processor and connectivity upgrade rather than a major redesign. The commonly mentioned possibilities are:

- Apple’s rumored N1 wireless chip.
- Possible Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread support if the N1 report is accurate.
- A possible Siri Remote refresh.
- Support for new Siri or Apple Intelligence-related functions.
These are reported possibilities, not confirmed specifications. The same reports suggest little or no dramatic external redesign.
What is confirmed about the current Apple TV 4K
Apple’s current Apple TV 4K uses an A15 Bionic chip and comes in two configurations: 64GB with Wi‑Fi, and 128GB with Wi‑Fi plus Ethernet. The Ethernet model supports Thread networking, and Apple positions Apple TV 4K as an Apple Home hub for compatible smart-home accessories.
That difference matters when shopping: the two current storage models do not have identical networking features. The Ethernet version is the relevant choice if Thread support and a wired network connection are important to your home setup.

Expected HomePod mini changes
The current HomePod mini dates from November 2020 and is reported to use Apple’s S5 chip. A refreshed model could reportedly include:

- A newer Ultra Wideband chip.
- The rumored N1 wireless chip.
- New color options.
- Participation in Apple’s broader AI-powered Siri system.
The most important qualification concerns local processing. An S9-class chip would not necessarily be capable of handling Apple Intelligence locally, according to the reporting. The HomePod mini could instead depend on cloud processing, an iPhone, an Apple TV or another home device for more demanding requests.
Apple currently describes HomePod mini as a smart speaker, Siri assistant and smart-home controller designed to work with iPhone. Its role is therefore different from the Apple TV’s: the Apple TV is a display-connected streaming box and home hub, while HomePod mini is primarily a voice endpoint, speaker and room controller.
Why Apple may release them together
The likely reason is coordination. Apple reportedly delayed these products while its next-generation Siri features were delayed. Launching them as a pair would let Apple introduce a home platform rather than two unrelated hardware updates.

- Apple TV could handle television-connected entertainment, home-hub duties and some heavier processing.
- HomePod mini could hear requests throughout the room, answer through its speaker and control accessories.
- A future home hub could offer a display-based control point for HomeKit, security and FaceTime.
A July 2026 9to5Mac report described a possible separate Apple home hub with a roughly seven-inch square display, tabletop or wall-mounted designs, a tvOS-based interface with watchOS-like elements, FaceTime, security monitoring and personalized controls. That device remains a rumor and is background to this story, not proof that the Apple TV or HomePod mini will include a display or camera.

Where Wi‑Fi 6E fits
Wi‑Fi 6E extends Wi‑Fi 6 into the 6GHz band. That adds spectrum and can reduce congestion, but only when the router and client device both support it. Range, walls, interference and network layout also affect the result.
The original report suggested that a shared Apple wireless chip could support Wi‑Fi 6E, but it also treated HomePod mini support as uncertain. A chip capable of a wireless standard does not guarantee that Apple will enable that standard in the final product.
Do not buy a Wi‑Fi 6E or Wi‑Fi 7 router solely for these rumored devices. Upgrade only if your existing network has a separate reason to change, because the final radios remain unknown and the practical benefit depends on your home and compatible devices.

Apple had not confirmed the final names, launch date, prices, chips, wireless standards, Siri Remote design, AI architecture, colors or whether the larger HomePod would be updated in the sources reviewed.

What current Apple Home devices can already do
You do not need to wait for the rumored models to build an Apple smart home. Apple currently identifies Apple TV, HomePod and HomePod mini in Apple Home networking roles, including home-hub and Thread Border Router functions where supported. Apple’s Matter guidance explains those roles.
Apple also notes in its iOS feature documentation that some Home features require a home hub such as Apple TV or HomePod, compatible accessories and current software. The current Apple TV 4K can control compatible accessories, support Matter and enable remote access through the Home app.
That means the rumored refreshes may improve performance and future Siri capabilities, but they are not expected to introduce the basic idea of Apple TV and HomePod mini serving as home infrastructure.

Should you buy now or wait?
Wait if:
- You specifically want Apple’s next-generation Siri or AI-focused smart-home features.
- You are buying Apple TV mainly as a home hub and already have a working device.
- You plan to buy several HomePod minis and would regret a near-term refresh.
- You have a Wi‑Fi 6E or Wi‑Fi 7 network and want newer wireless hardware.
- You can tolerate an uncertain release date.
Buy current hardware if:
- You need a streaming box now for 4K video, AirPlay, Apple services or gaming.
- You want an inexpensive Siri speaker or Apple Home controller immediately.
- You do not care about rumored AI features.
- You find a meaningful discount rather than paying full price just before a possible refresh.
- You accept that rumors can slip again or launch with fewer changes than expected.
For an Apple TV buyer, the Ethernet model is worth considering when wired networking or Thread matters. For a HomePod mini buyer, remember that it remains a speaker and voice endpoint—not a replacement for a rumored display-based home hub.
The practical takeaway
The “one thing in common” originally meant a rumored Apple-designed Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth chip, potentially with Wi‑Fi 6E. In the more important 2026 context, the shared purpose is reportedly Apple’s effort to make Apple TV and HomePod mini parts of an AI-enabled Apple Home platform.
That makes Siri—not Wi‑Fi 6E—the more useful lens for deciding whether to wait. But the products, prices, chips and launch date were still unconfirmed as of August 18, 2026. Buy current hardware for an immediate, discounted need; wait if the promised future platform is the reason you are shopping.
