The product is BALMUDA The Clock, a compact aluminum bedside clock that combines an illuminated clock face, ambient sound, a focus timer, and a gradual fade-in alarm. It is an appealing phone-reduction device and a striking design object—but it is not a conventional sunrise lamp, sleep tracker, or medical light-therapy device.
In the United States, BALMUDA lists it at $499. That price makes sense only if you specifically value its materials, animated display, portability, and combination of bedside routines. For ordinary timekeeping or genuine sunrise-style waking, less expensive alternatives are more suitable.
What is BALMUDA The Clock?
BALMUDA The Clock is a premium alarm clock from Japanese appliance maker BALMUDA. Its design is built around a simple idea: replace some of the phone’s bedside jobs—alarm, timer, and ambient audio—without putting a bright, distracting smartphone next to your pillow.

The clock is made from a machined aluminum block and measures approximately 3 inches square. It has a physical dial, control knob, carrying loop, illuminated face, built-in stereo speakers, and USB-C charging. BALMUDA’s U.S. listing also describes it as portable and includes a travel pouch for the U.S. model. The company’s product page lists up to 24 hours of battery life and support for the BALMUDA Connect app on iOS and Android.
#1 Best Overall
- RELAX TIME - Set your phone aside at night and let 6 preset ambient sounds—rain, river, fireplace and more—help you wind down and truly rest before sleep
- ALARM - Make The Clock your bedside alarm so you can keep your phone out of the bedroom. It starts quietly 3 minutes before your set time and rises gradually for a gentler wake-up
- POWER & CHARGING - The Clock is equipped with a high-performance speaker system and light display. Use it wire-free when you want portability, or keep it plugged in via USB-C for continuous use. For the best experience, we recommend charging it overnight each day. USB-C cable and AC power adapter not included
- TIMER - Set 1–60 minutes. Add steady white noise to support focus or a short reset without phone notifications
- CONNECTED PLATFORM - The Clock is built on a connected software platform designed to evolve over time through feature updates
BALMUDA’s origin story describes founder Gen Terao wanting an alternative to playing rain sounds on a bright tablet at bedtime. That explains the product’s premise, but it is not evidence that the clock itself improves sleep.
How the unusual light display works
The display, called “Light Hour” in product coverage, is more atmospheric than a standard digital clock. Glowing numbers represent the 12-hour clock, while minutes and seconds appear as concentric rings of tick marks. Animations make the passage of time visible rather than simply showing static digits.
This can be attractive if you want a bedside object that feels calmer and more considered than a rectangular digital display. It is less practical if you need a large, instantly readable time display—or if you sleep best in a completely dark room.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe crucial distinction is that the light is primarily part of the clock face and its timekeeping animations. Available product information does not establish that The Clock produces the powerful, room-brightening light used by a dedicated sunrise alarm.
What it does for sleep
The sleep-oriented feature is Relax Time. It plays ambient audio such as rain, fireplace sounds, a babbling river, piano, or other nature-oriented recordings, depending on the software and regional version. Sound selection and related settings can be customized through the clock or BALMUDA Connect.
That makes The Clock a wind-down and ambient-sound device, not a sleep monitor or treatment. There is no basis in the supplied product information to say that it tracks sleep stages, treats insomnia, improves sleep quality, or regulates circadian rhythms.
Light remains an important consideration. Morning light can support alertness and help time the body’s sleep-wake schedule, while excessive light at night can interfere with sleep. The Sleep Foundation’s guidance on light and sleep supports keeping a bedroom as dark as is practical. If you are light-sensitive, use the dimmest display setting available, move the clock farther from the pillow, or consider a no-light alarm instead.

Before buying, check practical audio details that are not fully established by the available product pages: the volume range, whether sounds loop seamlessly, whether playback has an automatic timer, and how an alarm behaves when Relax Time is active.
What the focus mode does
The focus feature is a standalone timer for work, study, reading, or other timed sessions. Product coverage describes settings from approximately 1 to 60 minutes, with optional sound playback through the stereo speakers.

- RELAXING LIGHT AND SOUND FROM NIGHT TO MORNING — Create a comfortable evening setting with The Lantern’s soft, adjustable light, then wind down with ambient sounds, white noise, and a gentle wake up alarm from The Clock.
- SOFT, ADJUSTABLE ILLUMINATION — The Lantern shifts from flickering Candle light to a warm Amber glow and Warm White light with the turn of a knob, making it easy to use for relaxing, reading, or getting ready for bed.
- RELAX, SLEEP, WAKE — The Clock includes 6 preset ambient sounds, optional white noise, a gradual alarm, and a calm LED display for evening routines, quiet moments, and gentle mornings.
- DESIGNED FOR RESTFUL SPACES — The Lantern uses soft, indirect illumination with a hidden LED light source to reduce harsh glare, while The Clock provides clear, crisp sound from its compact 3-inch aluminum body without the distractions of a phone.
- DESIGNED FOR MODERN ROOMS — This BALMUDA bundle brings together a rechargeable, lightweight lantern and compact sound machine alarm clock for bedrooms, guest rooms, reading spaces, home offices, and other quiet areas of the home.
Its main advantage is avoiding a phone, browser tab, or productivity app. You can start a defined session without exposing yourself to notifications or unrelated tasks. The trade-off is that this is a simple timer, not a complete productivity system: there is no indication of task lists, Pomodoro history, analytics, or cross-device productivity tracking.
Available coverage describes sound and visual cues at the end of a session, but the precise current behavior should be confirmed in the latest owner’s manual before relying on it in a shared or quiet workspace.
How the alarm wakes you
The Clock’s main wake-up feature is a gradual sound alarm. Coverage describes the alarm beginning quietly approximately three minutes before the programmed time, then increasing in volume until the set wake time. The illuminated dial may provide an additional visual cue.
That is different from a sunrise alarm. A sunrise clock normally brightens a substantially larger light source over roughly 20 to 30 minutes before the alarm. The Clock’s display is an illuminated time interface; the available evidence does not show that it simulates a full sunrise or provides clinically specified light therapy.
In practical terms, “wakes you naturally” should be read as “uses a less abrupt fade-in sound,” not as “wakes you with light alone.” Heavy sleepers may need a louder backup alarm, and people who must wake reliably should test the device before making it their only alarm.
What BALMUDA Connect adds
The clock can be used as a physical bedside object, but the companion app supplies much of its customization. BALMUDA says the app connects over Bluetooth and works with both iOS and Android.
According to BALMUDA’s U.S. product and app information, you can use the app to:
- Set and manage alarms.
- Register up to three alarms.
- Choose sounds for alarms, Relax Time, timers, and hourly chimes.
- Set a second time zone.
- Turn the second hand and hourly chime on or off.
- Adjust additional display and sound settings.
This creates an important distinction between phone-free use and phone-free setup. The clock’s purpose is to reduce the need for a phone during ordinary bedtime, focus, and wake-up routines. Advanced configuration still involves Bluetooth and a smartphone. The available product pages indicate standalone operation, but the current manual should be consulted for definitive details about initial setup, offline behavior, retained settings, and what happens after a power loss.

- UNIQUE ILLUMINATION - Bright enough to read by, or subdued enough to calm the mind, BALMUDA The Lantern illuminates your environment and enhances your spirit. The LED light placed at the top is guided into a central tube and emits light softly. The light source is hidden in the top so that it does not shine directly in your eyes.
- ADJUSTABLE BRIGHTNESS - Adjust the brightness or change the color temperature with the turn of a knob. The light will change from a fluctuating candlelight to an amber glow, and then to a warm white light, to match any scenario of your daily routines. Candle: Emulating the soft dance of a candle's flame to create a relaxing atmosphere. Amber: A natural and gentle brightness with warmth in color. It can be used as a bedside lamp. Warm White: A warm white light, perfect for reading in the dark.
- MULTI-PURPOSE DESIGN - BALMUDA The Lantern is the perfect addition to any situation -- whether it's at the dinner table, in your bedroom, or in the outdoors. Its sophisticated and multi-purpose design suits countless scenarios that call for quality illumination.
- LIGHT WEIGHT AND WATER-RESITANT - BALMUDA the Lantern can safely illuminate even after a few light splashes or rain drops. It is the perfect companion for outdoor dining or a peaceful evening stroll.
The battery is a serious practical drawback
“Up to 24 hours” is unusually consequential for an alarm clock. A portable clock that needs charging roughly daily introduces a failure mode that a permanently plugged-in bedside clock does not: forgetting to charge it can leave you without your primary alarm.

If you keep it on a nightstand, leaving it connected to power may be the safest approach. If you travel with it, treat the 24-hour figure as a maximum estimate rather than a schedule. Speaker volume, display brightness, Bluetooth activity, and the selected mode can affect runtime.
During the first week, confirm how it charges, whether the alarm operates while charging, whether settings survive disconnection or power loss, and whether alarms remain active without Bluetooth. Until those behaviors are clear in your own setup, keep a backup alarm.
What the evidence does—and does not—support
The Clock has several plausible comfort and convenience benefits: ambient sound may help some people create a consistent wind-down routine, a standalone timer may reduce phone checking, and a gradual alarm may feel less abrupt than an immediate beep.
Those are descriptions of possible use, not product-specific clinical findings. The available information does not demonstrate that The Clock improves sleep quality, prevents morning grogginess, enhances productivity, or changes circadian timing. It should not be described as sleep therapy, a sleep tracker, or a light-therapy device.

Pros and cons
Reasons to consider it
- Machined aluminum construction and a distinctive illuminated dial.
- Alarm, ambient sound, and focus timer in one dedicated device.
- Less reason to keep a phone beside the bed during normal use.
- Gradual alarm sound rather than an abrupt full-volume start.
- Compact, lightweight, USB-C-rechargeable design.
- App customization, up to three alarms, and a second time zone.
Reasons to avoid it
- $499 is a very high price for basic timekeeping.
- Up to 24 hours of battery life is weak for a portable alarm.
- It is not a verified full-room sunrise lamp.
- Bluetooth and the app matter for advanced setup and customization.
- The focus mode is a timer, not a productivity platform.
- The artistic display may be less legible than a large conventional clock.
- There is no evidence that it tracks sleep or detects sleep stages.
- There is no indication of a vibration or private alert for shared bedrooms.
Who should buy BALMUDA The Clock?
It is a reasonable fit for a design-conscious buyer who wants one compact object for bedtime sound, timed focus sessions, and a gentler alarm. It also suits someone trying to reduce phone use at the bedside and willing to pay for premium materials and a distinctive interface.
It is a poor fit for anyone seeking inexpensive timekeeping, a bright sunrise simulation, sleep tracking, medical-grade light therapy, or an alarm that can run for weeks without charging. Heavy sleepers and people with non-negotiable wake times should use a tested backup alarm.
Alternatives by primary need
| If you primarily want… | Consider… | How it differs from BALMUDA |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep content and bedtime routines | Loftie Clock | Offers sleep stories, sound baths, white noise, a two-phase alarm, and a small night light. Check current membership requirements if subscriptions are a concern. |
| A disconnected, music-focused alarm | OneClock | Uses an analog, deliberately offline approach with music from real musicians rather than BALMUDA’s app customization and Light Hour display. |
| True sunrise-style waking | Philips Wake-Up Light | Built around a larger light source that gradually brightens, with wake-up sounds. It is generally less compact and less design-led. |
| Many bedside features | Sharper Image Circadian Rhythm Clock | Includes sunrise simulation, evening dimming, guided breathing, color modes, temperature and humidity information, and USB charging. California buyers should review its Proposition 65 warning. |
These products address different jobs. Loftie emphasizes sleep content, OneClock emphasizes disconnection and simplicity, Philips emphasizes light-based waking, and Sharper Image emphasizes feature breadth. BALMUDA is strongest when industrial design, portability, ambient sound, and a phone-reducing ritual matter more than raw functionality.
