The XGIMI HORIZON S Max is an excellent large-screen projector for a living room or multipurpose room, but it is not a replacement for a reference-grade home theater. Its strengths are high brightness, wide color, Dolby Vision and IMAX Enhanced support, automatic setup, a rotating stand, and unusually good built-in audio. Its weaknesses are grayish blacks in very dark scenes, fixed placement, officially unsupported Netflix, limited connectivity, and gaming latency that is good rather than exceptional.
At the time checked on August 16, 2026, XGIMI’s U.S. page showed a sale price of $1,429, reduced from $1,899, while also marking the projector unavailable. Treat that as a dated price and stock snapshot, not a permanent offer.
What is the XGIMI HORIZON S Max?
The HORIZON S Max is a long-throw home projector designed to produce a large image in a living room, media room, bedroom, or temporary outdoor setup. It uses a 0.47-inch DMD and 4K XPR DLP technology to produce a 3840 × 2160 output. That is not native 4K in the sense of a 4K imaging chip; it is a pixel-shifting XPR design.
XGIMI’s Dual Light 2.0 system combines RGB laser and LED light sources. The projector supports HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision, 3D, and IMAX Enhanced. It runs Android TV 11 and includes automatic focus, keystone correction, screen alignment, obstacle avoidance, wall-color adaptation, and eye-protection dimming.

The product’s defining tension is simple: it offers many premium home-theater features in a highly convenient lifestyle design, but its black levels and installation flexibility do not match the best dedicated cinema projectors.

What does IMAX Enhanced actually add?
IMAX Enhanced is best understood as a certification and content ecosystem, not a magic setting that turns every film into a commercial IMAX presentation.
- Certification: The projector is certified to support IMAX Enhanced playback.
- Content: The movie or show must also be supplied in an IMAX Enhanced version by the relevant streaming service, disc, or external player.
- Processing: The projector provides an IMAX Enhanced picture mode or processing behavior intended for compatible material.
- Presentation: The mode cannot recreate the screen size, auditorium geometry, sound pressure, projection brightness, or calibrated environment of a commercial IMAX theater.
In practice, the benefit depends on the source, HDR format, player, region, picture mode, screen, and personal preference. The badge does not mean every movie will look visibly different. It also does not guarantee that a particular streaming app will expose compatible content on the projector’s built-in platform.
The IMAX Enhanced mode measured about 2,055 ANSI lumens in ProjectorCentral’s testing, broadly similar to the projector’s normal high-brightness modes. That makes it a useful feature, but not necessarily a brighter or automatically superior alternative to Dolby Vision or a well-adjusted Movie mode.
Some content may look more appealing in IMAX Enhanced, while other material may benefit from a different color balance or processing choice. Viewers should compare modes with compatible content rather than treating the certification alone as proof of better image quality.

Brightness: genuinely strong, but mode matters
XGIMI advertises 3,100 ISO lumens. That is a manufacturer specification measured under laboratory conditions, not a promise that every picture mode will produce 3,100 lumens with movie-appropriate color.
ProjectorCentral measured approximately:
- Standard: 2,045 ANSI lumens
- Movie: 2,007 ANSI lumens
- Sport: 2,055 ANSI lumens
- Brilliant: 2,010 ANSI lumens
- Soft: 1,247 ANSI lumens
- Custom: 2,061 ANSI lumens
- IMAX Enhanced: 2,055 ANSI lumens
- High Power: 3,166 ANSI lumens
The practical conclusion is favorable. Around 2,000 ANSI lumens is enough for a large image in a dim or moderately lit room and gives HDR highlights more impact than many lower-output lifestyle projectors. It is not television-like performance in direct sunlight, however. Curtains, controlled lighting, and a suitable screen still matter.

High Power mode reaches the advertised brightness range, but ProjectorCentral measured substantially more noise in that mode: roughly 59–61 dBA at three feet, compared with about 34 dBA in normal operation under its test conditions. Those are test-environment measurements, not an official noise rating, but they illustrate the trade-off.

Color and HDR
The HORIZON S Max has a wide color gamut and generally strong out-of-box color performance. XGIMI claims 110% BT.2020 coverage and cites a typical factory color-accuracy value of ΔE < 1. That is a factory-laboratory claim, not a guarantee that every unit will measure identically after installation.
Independent testing found good color accuracy and uniformity. Dolby Vision support is useful for compatible sources, while HDR10 and HLG cover more conventional HDR material. The projector’s brightness makes bright HDR scenes and saturated highlights convincing on a properly sized screen.
Do not assume, however, that the widest-gamut or brightest mode is automatically the best movie mode. High Power and laser-focused modes can change color balance, fan noise, and overall viewing comfort.
Contrast and black levels are the main weakness
Dark-scene performance is where the HORIZON S Max falls behind dedicated home-theater projectors. Bright scenes look punchy, but very dark scenes can show grayish blacks and less shadow separation than buyers may expect from a premium cinema projector.

RTINGS described the contrast as impressive in bright scenes but disappointing in very dark scenes. ProjectorJunkies also identified black levels and contrast as significant limitations. The effect is most noticeable in a fully darkened room while watching films with long shadowy sequences, night photography, or space scenes.
Room reflections make the issue worse. A white ceiling, pale walls, glossy furniture, or a bright screen can reflect light back onto the image and lift perceived blacks. A dark, controlled theater helps, but it does not turn this projector into a class leader for native contrast.
This is the central buying decision: choose the HORIZON S Max for brightness, HDR impact, and convenience; choose a more cinema-focused projector if deep blacks and shadow detail are your highest priorities.

Laser speckle depends on the setup
The RGB laser portion of the Dual Light 2.0 system can expand color gamut, but ProjectorCentral noted that using the tri-color laser alone may introduce laser speckle. Another independent review reported no visible speckle with its tested content.
Neither result should be treated as universal. Perception varies by viewer, content, screen material, image size, and viewing distance. An ALR screen can make some artifacts, hotspotting, shimmer, or uneven color more noticeable. If you are sensitive to these effects, test the projector with the screen you intend to use before committing to an expensive installation.
Setup and placement
The automatic setup is genuinely useful
XGIMI’s ISA 5.0 automation includes:
- Auto focus
- Auto keystone correction
- Intelligent screen alignment
- Obstacle avoidance
- Wall-color adaptation
- Automatic eye protection
The projector also has a rotating built-in stand and supports front, rear, ceiling-front, and ceiling-rear projection. That makes it unusually adaptable for a projector that is not battery-powered. You can use it on a coffee table, move it between rooms, point it at a wall, or install it on a ceiling without buying a separate stand immediately.
These features are most valuable in rental homes, multipurpose rooms, temporary setups, and occasional outdoor movie use. In a carefully installed theater, they are less important because the projector can be aligned once and left in place.

Physical alignment still beats digital correction
Keystone correction and screen fitting alter the projected image digitally. They improve convenience, but they can reduce effective sharpness, waste pixels, and complicate low-latency gaming. For the best picture, place the projector squarely in front of the screen and avoid keystone correction whenever possible.
The rotating stand does not eliminate the need to measure the room. The HORIZON S Max has a fixed 1.2:1 throw ratio and no optical zoom. ProjectorCentral gives approximate examples of about 3.5 feet for a 40-inch image and about 17.4 feet for a 200-inch image. Actual placement depends on the image size, installation geometry, and manufacturer tolerances.
A 100- to 120-inch image is a more realistic everyday target for many rooms than the maximum advertised 200 inches. Measure from the intended lens position to the screen before buying, and remember to leave room for ventilation and cable routing.
A matte white screen is the safest general-purpose choice. An ambient-light-rejecting screen may help in a brighter room, but it can also produce narrower viewing angles, hotspotting, sparkle, shimmer, uneven color, or more visible laser artifacts. ALR is not automatically an upgrade.

Smart features and streaming
Android TV 11, Google Cast, 64GB of storage, Wi-Fi 5, and Bluetooth 5.1 make the projector easy to use for many streaming and casting tasks. The built-in software is convenient for everyday viewing, but it should not be treated as a complete replacement for an external streaming device.
Netflix is the important caveat
In the reviewed platform configuration, Netflix is not officially authorized or natively supported. XGIMI says Netflix is not pre-installed, while ProjectorCentral identifies the lack of official Netflix authorization as a limitation.
This does not make the projector unusable for Netflix. A certified external streaming player, game console, Blu-ray player, or compatible AV receiver can provide the app, depending on region and device support. It does mean that Netflix-first buyers should budget for another source and should not assume that Android TV app availability equals certified television-style support.
The same advice applies to other services: verify regional app availability and firmware behavior before purchase. XGIMI’s review page discusses its Netflix caveat.

One HDMI input with eARC is enough for a simple setup, but it is restrictive for a home theater with several consoles, a disc player, and a streaming box. An AV receiver or HDMI switch may be necessary. The two USB ports are useful for compatible media and accessories, but they do not compensate for having only one direct HDMI input.

This is a capable occasional-gaming projector, not a gaming-first display.
XGIMI advertises game latency of 20ms or less with auto-keystone disabled. ProjectorCentral’s measurements were more specific:

Ultra-Low Latency mode may restrict image-processing features, and keystone correction may be unavailable or limited. The 19ms result is respectable for casual play, racing games, RPGs, and single-player titles. Competitive players who are accustomed to a fast gaming monitor will find the response less suitable, especially at 120Hz.
For the best gaming result, physically align the projector, disable keystone, select the appropriate low-latency mode, and connect through an HDMI switch or receiver if you have several consoles.

Audio and physical design
The two 12-watt Harman/Kardon speakers are one of the HORIZON S Max’s strongest convenience features. They are useful for everyday television, casual movie nights, and temporary setups without immediately adding a sound system. HDMI eARC allows connection to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver.
For a genuine theater installation, external audio remains preferable. A projector’s built-in speakers cannot create the scale, bass, or surround field of a properly placed soundbar, receiver, and speaker system.
The motorized sliding lens cover protects the optics when the projector is not in use. The rotating stand supports quick repositioning and different projection angles. XGIMI also lists optional floor-stand and ceiling-mount compatibility.

It requires mains power and is considerably larger and heavier than a true travel projector. Its portability is room-to-room flexibility, not cordless operation.
Who should buy the HORIZON S Max?
Buy it if:
- You want a very large image in a living room or multipurpose room.
- You value brightness and HDR highlights more than reference-level black levels.
- You want automatic focus, keystone, obstacle avoidance, and flexible placement.
- You want Dolby Vision and IMAX Enhanced support in this general price category.
- You occasionally game but do not need esports-level latency.
- You are comfortable using an external streaming device for Netflix.
- You want built-in speakers that are usable before buying a separate audio system.
Choose something else if:
- You want the deepest possible blacks in a fully dark home theater.
- Netflix must work natively without another device.
- You need several HDMI inputs directly on the projector.
- You require optical zoom or optical lens shift for precise installation.
- You want especially low-latency 4K/120 gaming.
- You are highly sensitive to laser speckle and cannot test the projector with your screen.
- The current sale price is close to newer projectors with more modern or better-certified smart platforms.
Alternatives worth investigating
The best alternative depends on which HORIZON S Max weakness matters most.
- XGIMI HORIZON S Pro: Relevant for buyers who like the same design family but may accept lower brightness or fewer premium features. Compare current specifications and price before choosing.

- A dedicated Epson or LCD/DLP home-theater projector: Potentially preferable for a permanent installation, lens-shift flexibility, or film-oriented contrast, depending on the exact model and price.
Do not assume any alternative is better without checking current regional pricing, stock, app certification, installation features, and independent measurements.
Final verdict
The XGIMI HORIZON S Max is a strong choice for buyers who want an impressive big-screen picture without building a highly specialized theater. It is bright, colorful, easy to position, well equipped for HDR, and supported by good built-in sound. IMAX Enhanced is a useful differentiator when compatible content is available, but it does not recreate a commercial IMAX auditorium or guarantee that every movie will look better.
Its limitations are equally important: dark-scene blacks are not class-leading, the 1.2:1 throw ratio demands careful placement, Netflix is not officially supported on the built-in platform, there is only one HDMI input, and gaming latency is merely adequate for competitive play.
At a substantial discount, the HORIZON S Max becomes an attractive bright, flexible living-room projector. Near its full list price, compare newer lifestyle models and dedicated home-theater alternatives carefully. Buy it for the combination of brightness, convenience, and large-screen versatility—not for the IMAX badge alone.
