If your TV intermittently loses sound, switches back to its built-in speakers, drops Dolby Atmos, or forgets a connected soundbar or AV receiver, the cause is usually an HDMI handshake, cable, CEC, firmware, or compatibility problem—not the audio format by itself.
Use this sequence rather than changing settings at random: reduce the system to the TV and audio device, replace the HDMI cable, perform a complete power reset, re-enable HDMI-CEC and eARC, update firmware, and then test audio formats one at a time.
First, identify what is actually failing
“eARC keeps dropping” can describe several different faults. The symptom helps determine which test is most useful.

| Built-in TV apps work but external HDMI sources fail | Check source-device output, passthrough, CEC, and the TV’s handling of external inputs. |
| Audio fails only when changing inputs, waking a console, or switching content | Look for a CEC conflict or audio-format renegotiation. |
| Volume control fails but audio continues | This is more likely a CEC control problem than a complete eARC audio failure. |
eARC is designed to return audio from TV apps, broadcast, cable, satellite, and devices connected to the TV to a soundbar or AV receiver. It supports high-bitrate formats such as Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X, and uncompressed multichannel audio. 1. Confirm the correct eARC ports
The basic connection should look like this:
TV HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC

└── HDMI cable ──► Soundbar/AVR HDMI OUT labeled ARC/eARC or TV ARC/eARC- Connect the TV end to the one HDMI input specifically labeled ARC or eARC. Most TVs do not support return audio on every HDMI input.
- Connect the other end to the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI OUT labeled ARC/eARC or TV. An ordinary HDMI input on the soundbar is not normally a return-audio port.
- Check whether the soundbar’s port is labeled “HDMI OUT (TV-ARC)” or similar; that can still be the correct connection.
- Remove HDMI switches, splitters, extenders, adapters, wall plates, and couplers while testing.
- Reseat both connectors firmly. Look for a loose port, bent connector shell, cable strain, or a plug that falls out under its own weight.
Sony’s troubleshooting procedure and Samsung’s eARC guidance both emphasize the designated ARC/eARC ports and a known-good cable.
2. Replace the cable with a certified, short cable
Do not assume that a product advertised as “HDMI 2.1,” “8K,” or “eARC” is automatically suitable. HDMI recommends using official cable names and certification labels because marketplace terminology can be misleading.
- For a normal short TV-to-soundbar run, use a short, passive, certified cable from a reputable manufacturer.
- For a system carrying 4K/120, 8K, VRR, or similar high-bandwidth video, choose a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable.
- For lower-bandwidth video systems, a certified Premium High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet may be adequate.
- Look for the official certification label or QR-verification mechanism.
- Avoid making an unusually long, active, optical, or expensive cable your first diagnostic replacement.
HDMI identifies Ultra High Speed cables as certified for eARC and up to 48 Gbps; Premium High Speed cables are certified for up to 18 Gbps. Check the Ultra High Speed requirements and Premium High Speed certification information.

A cable is a high-value isolation test, but it is not proof that the cable is the root cause. If the dropout occurs only when a console wakes or content changes format, another device or a compatibility issue may be triggering the failure.
3. Perform a complete eARC power reset
A normal remote-control restart may leave HDMI circuitry partially powered. Use this full reset:

- Turn off the TV and soundbar or AV receiver.
- Unplug both devices from AC power.
- Disconnect the HDMI cable from both ends.
- Disconnect every other HDMI device from the TV.
- Wait at least two minutes.
- Reconnect the HDMI cable to the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the audio device’s ARC/eARC output.
- Reconnect AC power.
- Turn on the TV first.
- Turn on the soundbar or receiver second.
- Check whether the TV recognizes the external audio system.
This follows Sony’s documented two-minute reset procedure. Test built-in TV apps before reconnecting any source device.
4. Check eARC, CEC, speaker, and passthrough settings
Manufacturers use different names and menu layouts, but look for these generic controls:
- eARC mode: Set it to Auto or On.
- HDMI-CEC: Enable it on the TV and audio device while testing discovery and control.
- Speaker output: Select Audio System, Receiver, or Soundbar rather than TV Speakers.
- Digital audio output: Start with Auto or Pass Through.
- Audio format: Test stereo PCM first, then the preferred Dolby, DTS, or multichannel setting.
- Soundbar input: Select TV, ARC, eARC, or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
On supported newer Sony TVs, the relevant path may be Settings → Display & Sound → Audio output → eARC mode → Auto, followed by Speakers → Audio system. Menus vary by model and software version; Sony documents this example in its eARC setup guide.
Some accessibility or special audio settings can affect which eARC options are available on particular TVs. If an expected option is missing, check the model’s manual rather than assuming the port is defective.
5. Check HDMI-CEC for control conflicts
CEC handles device discovery, power coordination, automatic input switching, and volume control on many systems. It has different names:

Enable CEC on both the TV and audio device. Samsung says Anynet+ must be active before eARC can work on supported Samsung combinations. Sony recommends enabling Control for HDMI and checking whether the audio system appears in the TV’s device list.
If the connection remains unstable, disable CEC temporarily on other HDMI sources—not necessarily on the TV and soundbar—and test the two-device setup. A console, streaming box, Blu-ray player, or switch may wake up and issue a command that causes renegotiation. Disabling CEC can stop automatic power, volume, and input switching, so treat it as a diagnostic or targeted workaround rather than a universal permanent fix.
6. Disconnect every other HDMI device
Reduce the system to:
TV ⇄ soundbar or AV receiverTest in this order:
- Built-in TV apps.
- One external source.
- Additional sources, one at a time.
- HDMI switches, receiver pass-through, and other intermediaries last.
If one device brings the problem back, disable its CEC feature, try another HDMI input, and—if video compatibility permits—connect it directly to the soundbar or receiver. A CEC-less HDMI cable or adapter can be tested as a targeted workaround in some systems, but it adds another variable and should not be the first step.
7. Test audio formats methodically
Set the TV’s digital audio output to PCM temporarily. If PCM remains stable but bitstream, Atmos, or DTS drops, the physical connection may be working and the problem may involve format support, passthrough, processing, or firmware.

“Atmos” is not one single transport path. Streaming services may use Dolby Digital Plus Atmos, while disc playback can use Dolby TrueHD Atmos; a source may also output multichannel PCM. Confirm which format is being tested before concluding that Atmos support is broken.

For Apple TV, use Settings → Video and Audio → Audio Format → Change Format and select a different format temporarily. Apple documents this as a missing-sound diagnostic in its HDMI and audio troubleshooting guidance. PCM is a test fallback, not a full solution for a system purchased for lossless Atmos or DTS:X.

Check updates for the TV, soundbar, AV receiver, streaming box, game console, Blu-ray player, and any HDMI switch or matrix that remains in the system. Firmware can affect HDMI compatibility, CEC behavior, audio-format handling, and device discovery.
Record each model number and firmware version first. If the trouble began immediately after an update, record that timing and check the exact manufacturer’s support page or release notes. Do not assume an update fixes every eARC problem, and do not factory-reset the TV as an early step.
Sony and Samsung both include firmware updates in their eARC troubleshooting procedures.

- Ordinary ARC: Turn eARC off and test ARC if both devices support it. If ARC is stable but eARC is not, investigate eARC-format handling, firmware, or interoperability. ARC may not carry the high-bitrate formats your system is intended to use.
- Optical: Use it as a diagnostic fallback. It can establish whether the TV and soundbar can produce stable audio, but it is not generally equivalent to eARC for lossless multichannel formats.
- Direct source connection: Connect sources to the receiver or soundbar and send video separately to the TV, provided the audio device supports the required video resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and gaming features.
- TV speakers: Use them temporarily to establish whether the TV’s own audio is stable.
- Bluetooth: Useful for convenience, but not an equivalent replacement for lossless multichannel eARC.
HDMI explains the format advantage of eARC in its eARC specification overview; Sony provides separate ARC, eARC, and optical connection guidance. eARC is not defined as automatically backward-compatible with ARC, so actual behavior depends on both manufacturers’ implementations.
10. Find the defective component
Use controlled substitutions instead of changing several variables at once:
- Keep the same TV and audio device, but use a different short certified HDMI cable.
- Keep the cable and TV, but test another soundbar or receiver if available.
- Keep the soundbar or receiver, but test another TV if available.
- Test the original pair with all other HDMI devices removed.
- Compare PCM with the preferred high-bitrate format.
- Compare eARC with ordinary ARC.
Interpret the result this way:
- If the failure follows the cable, replace it.
- If it follows the soundbar or receiver, contact that manufacturer.
- If it stays with the TV, investigate its port, firmware, or hardware.
- If only one external source triggers it, investigate that source’s audio output and CEC settings.
- If only lossless formats fail, investigate format support and passthrough rather than immediately replacing hardware.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Service or replacement testing is reasonable when the problem persists with only the TV and audio device connected, a short certified cable, current firmware, PCM audio, and no adapters, switches, or extenders. At that point, a defective HDMI port, firmware defect, or hardware fault is more likely than a hidden setting.

Give support:
- TV and soundbar/AVR model numbers
- HDMI cable type and length
- Firmware versions
- All connected source devices
- Whether PCM works
- Whether ARC works
- Whether built-in apps behave differently from external sources
- Exactly when the dropout occurs—for example, startup, input switching, console wake, or a codec change
Do not replace a soundbar or receiver solely because a generic cable or settings checklist failed. A replacement audio device is justified when the fault follows that device to another TV and it also fails with a certified cable, current firmware, PCM, and ordinary ARC.
