No—you generally do not need a subscription to use a compatible Google Nest camera. You can usually watch the live feed, receive basic alerts, and use two-way talk without Nest Aware or Google Home Premium. The main trade-off is recorded video: depending on the camera, you may get only snapshots, a short free preview window, or no meaningful history without a paid plan.
As of October 1, 2025, Google’s second-generation Nest Aware subscription purchased directly from Google is called Google Home Premium. The old Nest Aware name still applies to some legacy first-generation and partner-billed subscriptions.
What Nest Aware actually does
Nest Aware is Google’s cloud service for Nest cameras and doorbells. It adds retained video history and, depending on the camera, plan, country, and account, intelligent alerts such as familiar-face, package, sound, and garage-door detection.

There are four products or situations that people commonly lump together under “Nest Aware”:

- Google Home Premium Standard: The current direct-Google replacement for the ordinary second-generation Nest Aware plan.
- Google Home Premium Advanced: The current direct-Google successor to Nest Aware Plus, with longer event history and 24/7 history for eligible devices.
- Legacy or partner-billed Nest Aware: First-generation plans and subscriptions purchased through security partners can have different names, prices, billing rules, and features.

What works without a subscription?
A Nest camera still needs power, Wi-Fi, an internet connection, a Google Account, and the appropriate Google Home or Nest app. But a paid plan is not the same as camera activation or a required license.
Depending on the model, you can generally use these features without paying:
- Live video streaming.
- Motion and basic activity alerts.
- Person alerts on supported cameras.
- Two-way talk.
- Activity Zones where supported.
- Camera settings, household sharing, and access controls.
- Limited event previews, snapshots, or short event history on some newer cameras.
Google confirms that live video remains available without a subscription, but its feature comparison varies by device. Check the current model-specific support information before assuming a feature is included.
How much free video history does your camera get?
There is no single free-storage rule for every Nest camera. Google uses terms including “event video history,” “event video previews,” and “snapshots,” and the allowance depends heavily on the camera generation.

These allowances can change as Google updates its product documentation. The safest approach is to identify the exact camera model in the Google Home or Nest app and compare it with Google’s free-history guidance and newer wired-camera information.
Google Home Premium Standard vs. Advanced
For U.S. customers, Google’s direct-billed plans were listed as follows in August 2026. Prices are before applicable taxes and can change.

Event-based history
Event-based history stores clips when the camera detects activity such as a person, animal, vehicle, motion, or sound. For example, if someone approaches your front door, the camera saves an event clip around that activity.
It does not preserve every second between events. Gaps in the timeline are therefore normal. A 30-day or 60-day allowance refers to how long event clips can remain available—not to 30 or 60 days of continuous video.

24/7 history
24/7 history continuously streams and stores footage for the applicable retention period. It is available only on eligible devices and requires Google Home Premium Advanced.

- A Nest Cam (battery) must be connected to wired power to use 24/7 history.
- A Nest Doorbell (battery) does not support 24/7 history, even if you install it with wired power.
- A battery camera does not become a continuous recorder simply because you purchase Advanced.
- After the 10-day 24/7 window, footage without detected activity may be removed, so gaps can still appear.
Check eligibility before upgrading using Google’s 24/7 history guidance.
What paid intelligent features add
Paid features vary by device, country, plan, and software rollout. Depending on those conditions, a subscription may add:
- Familiar face detection: Alerts that distinguish recognized people from unfamiliar visitors. The feature uses a shared familiar-face library for cameras in the same home.
- Sound detection: Smoke-alarm and carbon-monoxide-alarm detection, and in some locations other sound-related alerts.
- Package and garage-door detection: Availability is device- and region-dependent; Google identifies some of these features as U.S.-specific.
- More descriptive notifications: Alerts can provide more detail than a basic motion notification.
- Advanced AI tools: Searchable camera history, daily summaries, detailed event descriptions, and other Gemini for Home camera features may be available with Advanced.
These are software features, not permanent hardware capabilities. They may roll out gradually and can depend on your device, region, account eligibility, and plan. Familiar-face detection also has privacy and legal requirements; Google currently identifies it as unavailable for cameras and doorbells in Illinois. Read Google’s familiar-face documentation before enabling it, and obtain consent where local law requires it.
One subscription can cover the home—but check legacy plans
Current Google Home Premium is designed as a whole-home subscription for compatible Google Nest devices. That can make it more attractive if you have several cameras or doorbells.

If you own only one camera and mainly use live view, the recurring cost is harder to justify. First-generation Nest Aware, by contrast, was structured differently and may be billed per camera. Do not compare an old per-camera bill with current whole-home pricing until you identify the subscription generation and billing source.
Which plan is right for you?
Choose no subscription if:
- You mainly want live viewing.
- You do not need to investigate footage after an event.
- Your newer camera’s free preview allowance is sufficient.
- You have one camera and rarely need recordings.
- You prefer to avoid recurring cloud costs or retain less footage online.
Choose Standard if:
- You want to review incidents after receiving an alert.
- Thirty days of event history is enough.
- You have multiple compatible cameras.
- You want the lowest-cost paid option.
- You do not need continuous recording.
Choose Advanced if:
- You specifically need 24/7 history and own an eligible wired camera.
- You need up to 60 days of event history.
- You want searchable history, daily summaries, or more detailed AI descriptions.
- You have enough compatible cameras to make the whole-home price worthwhile.
Do not choose Advanced solely because you own a battery camera or battery doorbell. It will not overcome those devices’ hardware limitations.

Canceling should not normally remove the camera itself. Live viewing and the model’s free features should continue, but paid video-history access and retention become limited.
Google specifically warns that moving from Advanced to Standard removes event history older than 30 days and converts the last 10 days of 24/7 history into event-based history. Other cancellation consequences depend on the subscription and device. Download anything important before changing plans, and do not assume that paid recordings will remain available indefinitely after cancellation.

How to check or purchase a plan
For a subscription billed directly by Google:
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Open Home settings.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select Google Home Premium.
- Choose Standard or Advanced and complete payment.
You can also manage the plan through the Google Store subscription page. iPhone and iPad users may be redirected to the Google Store rather than completing the purchase inside the iOS app.
If you cannot find your recordings, check the app your camera uses. Newer cameras are generally set up in Google Home. Older cameras may continue to use the Nest app, and compatible history may also be available through Google Home for web or home.nest.com.
Why your existing Nest Aware plan may look different
Before changing an old subscription, check:
- Whether it is first-generation or second-generation Nest Aware.
- Whether Google or a security partner bills you.
- Whether the camera still uses the Nest app.
- Whether the plan is per camera or covers the home.
- Which country and region apply to the account.
Google’s October 1, 2025 name change applies to second-generation subscriptions purchased directly from Google. Partner-provided subscriptions can retain the Nest Aware name, and first-generation Nest Aware remains a separate legacy category. Do not cancel an old plan until you know which type you have.

You can keep using a compatible Nest camera without subscribing, provided its free features meet your needs. If you require long-term recordings without a cloud plan, you may prefer a different camera ecosystem built around local storage, such as some Reolink, Eufy, or UniFi Protect systems.
That is not a feature-for-feature replacement. Local-storage systems can require storage hardware, more setup, network maintenance, and different remote-access arrangements. They may reduce recurring fees while introducing other costs and responsibilities.
Verdict
You do not need Nest Aware or Google Home Premium to view a compatible Nest camera live. For many newer cameras, you also receive a limited amount of free event video or previews.
Pay for Standard if you mainly want dependable access to event clips. Choose Advanced only when you need 60-day history, searchable AI features, or 24/7 history on an eligible wired camera. If you use the camera as a live monitor and do not need recordings, keeping the subscription-free option is a sensible choice.
