The Hisense PX3-Pro is the best single-projector choice for replacing an OLED when the goal is a 100- to 150-inch living-room image. Its triple-laser DLP engine, specified 3,000-lumen brightness, Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support, Google TV, HDMI 2.1 connectivity and 1080p/240Hz gaming mode make it unusually complete for an ultra-short-throw projector.
But it does not replace an OLED in every respect. OLED still delivers deeper blacks, better dark-room contrast, simpler installation, stronger daylight performance and easier everyday use. Buy the PX3-Pro for scale and immersion—not because it produces a better picture below roughly 85 inches.

“Worth buying instead of an OLED” depends on what “better” means. OLED wins on picture quality and convenience. A projector wins on image size. Once the screen reaches 100 inches or more, the PX3-Pro can create an experience no sensibly priced OLED can match.
That is the important qualification: the PX3-Pro is a projector-plus-screen-plus-room-lighting purchase. It is not a television that can simply be placed on a stand and judged by its projector price alone.

Why the Hisense PX3-Pro is the leading answer
The PX3-Pro combines the features that matter most when a projector is being asked to behave like a living-room television.
- Specified brightness: 3,000 lumens, useful for sports, animation and moderately lit rooms, although it still performs best when the room is dim or dark.
- Triple-laser DLP: The three-laser light engine provides strong colour volume and a wide-gamut image without a traditional lamp.
- Large image range: It is designed for images from 80 to 150 inches, giving buyers flexibility to choose a 100-, 120- or larger installation.
- Broad HDR compatibility: It supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. That is useful for modern streaming services and discs, but format support does not make projector HDR identical to OLED HDR.
- Smart television features: Google TV and Netflix support reduce the need for an external streaming box.

TechRadar’s PX3-Pro review praised its bright, colourful image, HDR flexibility, gaming performance and general versatility. Those strengths matter because many projectors are excellent for films but awkward as everyday displays. The PX3-Pro is closer to a television replacement—provided the room and screen are suitable.

The cited launch review listed a US launch price of $3,499 in September 2024 and confirmed that a screen was not included in that configuration. That is historical launch information, not a current 2026 street-price quote. Check the current Hisense listing and authorised retailer before buying.

What the projector does not beat
A projector cannot produce a blacker image than the room and screen allow. An OLED’s pixels can switch off individually, creating genuinely black areas. A projected black area is still affected by reflected light from the projector, the screen and the room.
That difference is obvious in dark films. Space scenes, night photography and shadow detail will generally look more convincing on an OLED in a controlled room. Even with the PX3-Pro’s excellent colour and brightness, its blacks may appear dark grey when ambient light reaches the screen.
OLED also remains better for:
- Picture quality below about 85 inches: The OLED has superior contrast, uniformity and fine image control.
- Bright-room viewing: Daylight and room lighting wash out projected blacks. A bright OLED or mini-LED television is usually more dependable.
- Simple installation: An OLED needs a wall mount or stand. A UST setup requires careful positioning, a suitable screen and a stable cabinet.
- Everyday television: News, short videos and casual streaming are more convenient on a conventional TV.
- Competitive gaming: The PX3-Pro’s 1080p/240Hz mode is useful, but it is not 4K/240Hz and does not make the projector a universal substitute for a high-refresh OLED.
- Image uniformity and geometry: A flat emissive panel has no screen waves, wall irregularities or UST alignment issues.
Tom’s Guide explains the broader trade-off in its laser-TV guide: a laser TV is generally a UST projector with television-style software, often paired with an ambient-light-rejecting screen. It is not a self-emissive television and should not be judged as though it were one.

The screen is part of the projector
The PX3-Pro is not a complete large-screen system without a screen. A white wall can be useful for an initial test, but it will not show what the finished installation can do.

These screens are designed to reflect light arriving from below while rejecting some light from other directions. That can improve perceived contrast and daytime viewing compared with a generic white screen.
A screen affects:
- Perceived brightness and contrast
- Black-level performance
- Colour neutrality
- Viewing-angle behaviour
- Hotspotting and sparkle
- Alignment tolerance
- How much ambient light reaches the viewing surface
Do not assume that any ALR screen will work equally well. UST screens have a specialised optical structure, and the projector’s steep upward light path must match the screen material. A conventional long-throw screen can produce disappointing results with a UST projector.
Installation checks
Before permanently mounting a screen or buying furniture, confirm all of the following:
- The wall is flat, level and strong enough for the screen hardware.
- The cabinet is low, rigid and stable enough to keep the projector from moving.
- The screen can be installed perfectly square to the projector.
- The screen size fits the wall without doors, windows or trim interfering.
- The projected image is aligned before drilling or fixing anything permanently.
- The screen surface is genuinely designed for ultra-short-throw projection.
UST projectors magnify small errors. A cabinet that is slightly uneven, a screen that is not perfectly flat or a wall that is out of level can lead to focus variation, bands, waves or geometry problems.

A good match
- You want an image of at least 100 inches.
- You can dim the room for films.
- You have a flat, unobstructed wall.
- You can accommodate a low projector cabinet and screen.
- Movies, sports and immersive games are important uses.
- You accept that the system needs more planning than a television.
A poor match
- The room is bright throughout the day and cannot be controlled.
- You want an image smaller than about 85 inches.
- You mainly watch news, daytime television and short casual content.
- You expect OLED-level black levels.
- You dislike installation work or visible screen hardware.
- You are highly sensitive to DLP rainbow artifacts.
- Competitive gaming performance is more important than screen size.
Some viewers see brief red, green or blue flashes in high-contrast scenes from single-chip DLP projectors. This rainbow effect is highly individual. If possible, view the PX3-Pro in person, or buy from a retailer with a clear return policy.

UST versus a conventional home-theater projector
The PX3-Pro is an ultra-short-throw model because it is intended to sit close to the wall, usually on a TV-style cabinet. That makes it much easier to integrate into a living room than a ceiling-mounted projector.

UST is not automatically the best projection technology. It is the best category for someone who wants a very large image without giving up the basic layout of a living-room television.
PX3-Pro versus OLED by use case

Alternatives worth considering
Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS800
The Epson LS800 is the brightness-first alternative. Its specified 4,000-lumen output and three-chip 3LCD design make it attractive for daytime sports and for viewers who prefer to avoid the rainbow artifacts associated with single-chip DLP.

Hisense L9Q
The L9Q is the more ambitious premium laser-TV system. Hisense specifies 5,000 lumens, and TechRadar reported Hisense’s claim of up to 1,500 nits peak brightness when paired with its ALR screen. The cited coverage also describes 100- to 150-inch configurations and a 5,000:1 static-contrast claim.
Those figures should be treated as manufacturer claims or show-floor observations, not as universal independent laboratory results. Read the TechRadar L9Q coverage in that context. The L9Q makes sense when a premium, purpose-matched screen system is more important than the PX3-Pro’s value. It is less compelling for buyers who are comfortable sourcing a screen separately.

A large mini-LED television
A large mini-LED TV is the sensible alternative for a bright living room or a household that wants television convenience. It will not reach the PX3-Pro’s largest image sizes, but it generally offers stronger peak brightness, better black-level control than projection and no separate screen installation.
A conventional long-throw projector
For a dedicated, dark cinema room, a conventional projector may offer better placement options and a more specialised home-theater design. It is not usually the practical choice for someone replacing a living-room OLED because it needs more throw distance and installation planning.

The PX3-Pro’s 1080p/240Hz mode is a real advantage for fast gaming, but it must not be confused with 4K/240Hz. Buyers should decide whether they value:
- 4K presentation for films and console games;
- 1080p/240Hz for fast PC gaming;
- measured input lag rather than a headline refresh-rate figure;
- the capabilities of their console, graphics card, AV receiver and HDMI cables.
The projector accepts modern HDR formats, but Dolby Vision or HDR10+ compatibility is not a guarantee of OLED-like highlights. The final image depends on screen material, image size, room light, laser power and tone mapping. Projector HDR is a system result, not merely a logo on the specification sheet.
Audio and everyday usability
The PX3-Pro’s built-in speakers are convenient and loud enough for casual use, but a 120-inch image deserves audio with comparable scale. TechRadar found the built-in sound less impressive than the picture and limited in its Atmos effect.

A soundbar connected through HDMI eARC can be a sensible improvement. A receiver and surround-speaker system will create a more convincing cinema presentation, but it adds cost, wiring and installation. Do not treat external audio as mandatory; treat it as part of the total system if immersive sound matters.

Also consider how often the system will be used. A projector may be used less than planned if every viewing session requires darkening the room, switching inputs or lowering a screen. OLED is often the better choice for a household that wants a display available instantly for every kind of content.
Calculate the complete purchase
Do not compare the historical $3,499 PX3-Pro launch price directly with a television without adding the rest of the installation:
- UST ALR or CLR screen
- Low, stable cabinet or mounting solution
- Installation hardware or professional installation
- Soundbar, receiver or speakers if required
- Blackout curtains or other light-control measures
- External streaming hardware only if the built-in platform is unsuitable
- Delivery, warranty and return-shipping considerations
Potential screen suppliers include Akia Screens, Elite Screens, Vividstorm and Formovie. Confirm the exact screen material, size, UST compatibility, warranty and current availability before ordering. A generic projector screen is not an adequate substitute simply because it costs less.
Buying checklist
- Set the target size first. If the planned image is under about 85 inches, start with OLED.
- Measure the wall and furniture. Include screen borders, cabinet height and viewing distance.
- Choose the screen with the projector. Confirm that it is designed for UST projection.
- Control the room light. Curtains and darker viewing conditions matter more than simply increasing projector brightness.
- Confirm gaming requirements. Decide whether 4K presentation or 1080p/240Hz matters more.
- Plan the audio. Check HDMI eARC compatibility and cable routing.
- Test for rainbow artifacts. Use an in-person demonstration or a retailer with a suitable return policy.
- Price the complete system. Include the screen and installation, not just the projector.
- Check current availability and warranty. Model variants, included accessories and software support can differ by market.
Final verdict
The Hisense PX3-Pro is the projector to buy instead of an OLED when the priority is a genuinely huge, living-room-friendly image. Its combination of triple-laser colour, 3,000-lumen specified brightness, broad HDR support, Google TV, HDMI 2.1 and high-refresh gaming makes it the strongest all-round UST recommendation in this specific category.
Buy it only if the screen will be at least 100 inches and you are prepared to control the room light. If you want the best picture below roughly 85 inches, the easiest setup, the strongest daylight performance or OLED-level blacks, choose an OLED instead. For a bright room, consider the Epson LS800 or a large mini-LED TV; for a premium fixed-screen system, consider the Hisense L9Q.
