At CES in January 2020, an iPad sent a small security drone to inspect a house several miles away. The demonstration was genuinely live: an employee at the property switched on backyard lights, and the change appeared through the drone’s video feed. Six years later, Sunflower Labs’ idea has become a commercial drone-in-a-box system—but it is still a specialist security installation, not a replacement for cameras, alarms, or guards.
The CES demonstration was real—but carefully prepared
Engadget’s Nick Summers tested Sunflower Labs’ original Home Awareness System at CES 2020. Using an iPad Pro, he selected a preset inspection location at a suburban Airbnb several miles from the show floor. A Bee drone at the property lifted off from its Hive docking station and sent live video back to the tablet.
The site had been configured in advance with a mapped perimeter, inspection points, a Hive and approximately six Sunflower sensors. That distinction matters: the demonstration showed live remote supervision at a prepared property, not unrestricted “fly anywhere from anywhere” operation.

The lights changed shortly afterward. Summers could also pan the Bee’s camera left and right from the tablet. Engadget’s report supports the conclusion that this particular demonstration involved live communication and remote camera control. It does not independently establish long-term reliability, response times, or performance in severe weather.

How the original system was supposed to work
The concept had three main parts:
- Sunflowers: Outdoor motion and vibration sensors designed to resemble garden lights.
- Bee: A compact quadcopter equipped with a camera.
- Hive: A fixed docking, charging and control station.
The Sunflowers formed the first layer of detection. The 2020 report said each had an approximately 20-foot detection radius and could distinguish among people, cars and animals. When an event required investigation, the Bee could launch, navigate using GPS and ultrasonic collision avoidance, and stream video to a homeowner’s phone or tablet.
That workflow was more useful than simply mounting another camera: a fixed camera can watch only its installed sightline, while a drone can be dispatched to a pool, driveway, side yard or other location that may not be visible from the main security system.
The original $9,950 price is historical
Sunflower Labs advertised the system at a starting price of $9,950 during the CES 2020 launch period, with a $990 preorder payment. That figure should not be treated as the current price.

Its current FAQ gives a general operating-cost guideline of $4 to $7 per hour after installation, while directing prospective customers to request a customized estimate through the company’s design tool.
What the product became
The current system is called Beehive. Sunflower Labs says it now serves residential, commercial and industrial properties, and that it has been shipping systems since 2022 to customers in North America, Europe, Japan, Australia and Argentina.
The company has also moved away from presenting the original standalone Sunflower sensors as the center of the system. Its FAQ says those motion-and-vibration sensors are no longer developed or sold as standalone products; the current platform focuses on the drone, the Hive and integrations with third-party sensors.

How the current Beehive workflow operates
- An event triggers an inspection. A motion sensor or camera can initiate a flight. Sunflower Labs also says the Bee can launch manually or on a randomized schedule.
- The Bee flies to a saved destination. The system is designed to navigate autonomously to configured locations and return to the Hive.
- An operator reviews the scene. Sunflower Labs says the system provides live HD video and allows an operator to take control remotely.
- Software identifies activity. The company says its AI can detect and track people, vehicles and animals.
- The Bee returns to charge. After landing at the Hive, it recharges for its next mission.
“Autonomous” therefore needs careful interpretation. Autonomous navigation does not necessarily mean unattended operation. Sunflower Labs says that in most countries a pilot-in-command must remain connected to the system while the Bee is flying. That person may be the property owner, a security company or a remote-piloting service. The pilot generally supervises the operation and intervenes in an emergency rather than manually flying every routine mission.

According to Sunflower Labs’ specifications page, last updated June 25, 2025, the current Bee is listed as follows:

The Hive is listed at 35 kg and measures 86 × 80 × 80 cm when closed. It uses Ethernet connectivity, with optional LTE, and has approximately one hour of backup-battery runtime. The site requires power, internet access and a suitable outdoor installation position with clear sky access and approximately 2 m (6 ft) of clearance. Sunflower Labs lists Ethernet connectivity requiring approximately 6 Mbps up and down, with optional 5G or Starlink connectivity.
These numbers rule out the idea of continuous aerial surveillance. A typical mission may last only a few minutes, and the company says charging takes approximately two minutes for every minute of flight. A five-minute flight therefore takes about ten minutes to recharge; a fully depleted battery takes around 30 minutes.
The listed 600 m radius is not a guaranteed 600-metre circle of practical coverage. Buildings, trees, terrain, geofencing, battery reserves, weather and the required response time all affect the usable area. Larger sites may require multiple Beehives.

Sunflower Labs says the Bee has low-light cameras and can optionally be equipped with thermal imaging. Those are current company claims and should not be assumed to describe the 2020 CES prototype.

The Bee can observe, record and alert operators, but it is not an airborne intercom. Sunflower Labs’ FAQ says it has no speaker or microphone. It also says the system detects people, vehicles and animals but does not use facial recognition.
That makes the drone an inspection and verification tool rather than a physical-security device. It cannot restrain an intruder, block a vehicle or replace a response team.
Weather, obstacles and infrastructure are practical constraints
The current specifications list resistance to 20-mph winds and 32-mph gusts. Those are engineering limits, not a promise of equally stable flight or clear video in every condition. Heavy rain, snow, smoke, ice, dust and rapidly changing weather may still affect whether a mission should launch.

A six-metre obstacle-avoidance range is useful, but obstacle avoidance is not perfect perception. Thin wires, branches, reflective surfaces, birds and newly placed objects can create risks that a specification cannot eliminate.
The system also depends on the property’s infrastructure. A backup battery can keep the Hive operating for a limited period, but the drone still needs a suitable launch site, power, communications and a functioning control service. A network failure, prolonged outage or damaged Hive can create a coverage gap even when the Bee itself is operational.

Sunflower Labs says Beehive uses geofencing intended to keep flights within the customer’s property and optimizes flights around that property. The company also claims that footage beyond the property line is automatically blurred in live and recorded video, that customers own their footage, and that they can export or delete data and configure storage location and retention. It says performance logs are anonymized.

Those are manufacturer-described safeguards, not a blanket guarantee of legal compliance. A drone may still capture a neighboring home, road, visitor or bystander. Buyers should review the company’s current privacy policy and data-processing terms, then check local surveillance and data-protection law.
Sunflower Labs says Beehive is cleared to operate across the United States under an FAA Part 107 waiver and throughout Europe under EASA SORA authorization, with approvals elsewhere handled case by case. That does not mean every homeowner can install the system and fly it without additional obligations. Before signing a contract, establish who the pilot-in-command is, what authorization covers the specific site and flight profile, and whether flights over people, roads or neighboring property are permitted.
Who is it for?
Beehive makes the most sense where the property is large enough that fixed cameras leave meaningful blind spots and where an existing security operation can monitor and respond to alerts. Potentially suitable sites include:
- Large private estates and farms.
- Gated communities and campuses.
- Industrial yards and storage facilities.
- Airports, rail facilities and other expansive sites.
- Properties already using a professional monitoring center.
For an ordinary suburban house, the installation, compliance, connectivity and maintenance burden is likely disproportionate to the problem. A fixed outdoor camera, monitored alarm, improved lighting or a professional patrol may provide more useful protection at lower complexity. Aerial video can also be less valuable than a fixed camera for continuously documenting a doorway or gate.
Questions to ask before buying
- What is the complete installed cost for this property?
- Is the arrangement a purchase, lease or service contract?
- Are remote piloting or monitoring fees required?
- What exactly is included in the $4–$7-per-hour operating guideline?
- How many missions can be flown in a day before charging becomes a limitation?
- What happens during an internet, power or control-service outage?
- How does the system behave in high wind, heavy rain, snow and darkness?
- What are the battery, airframe and repair-replacement schedules?
- Who responds after the system confirms an intrusion?
- Which security integrations are supported at the monitoring center?
- Where is video stored, for how long and under whose legal control?
- Which aviation approvals are needed for the exact property?
- Is thermal imaging included or an additional option?
- Can the Hive be removed or relocated?
The construction and property-planning angle
For a new estate, campus or industrial site, the Hive should be treated as infrastructure rather than an appliance. The design must account for a clear launch and landing area, electrical service, network connectivity, service access, drainage and the drone’s configured routes. Landscaping, mature trees, temporary scaffolding, cranes and later building work can all change flight safety and sightlines.

Security planning should also decide what the drone is meant to accomplish. If the goal is identifying a person at a remote boundary, an aerial inspection may add value. If the goal is documenting every visitor at a gate, a fixed camera may be better. If the goal is stopping an intruder, neither camera nor drone replaces physical barriers, access control or a trained response team.
Verdict
The $10,000 security drone was not vaporware: the CES demonstration was live, and the concept developed into Sunflower Labs’ commercially available Beehive system. But the modern product is best understood as a specialized autonomous inspection layer. Its short flight duration, weather limits, infrastructure requirements, human-oversight obligations and site-specific pricing make it a plausible tool for large estates and commercial or industrial properties—not a universal replacement for ordinary home security.
Sunflower Labs says it currently ships internationally, but availability, installation and regulatory eligibility remain location-dependent. The appropriate buying path is a site assessment and customized quote, not the old CES preorder price.
