Capacitor reforming can sometimes bring an old aluminum electrolytic capacitor back into service, but it is not a cure-all. It may rebuild the oxide dielectric after long, voltage-free storage. It will not reliably repair dried electrolyte, corrosion, a damaged seal, high ESR, or an internal short.
For vintage radios, tube amplifiers, test equipment, and other high-voltage electronics, the safest approach is to disconnect the capacitor, apply DC through a properly rated current-limiting resistor, raise the voltage gradually, and monitor leakage current and temperature. A Variac or dim-bulb tester can help with cautious equipment startup, but neither is a complete capacitor-reforming instrument.
What capacitor reforming actually does
An aluminum electrolytic capacitor uses a thin aluminum-oxide layer as its dielectric. When the capacitor remains unenergized for years, that oxide layer can deteriorate. Applying its rated voltage immediately may produce excessive leakage current, which turns into heat and can damage the capacitor or surrounding equipment.

- Testing evaluates leakage, capacitance, ESR, insulation resistance, and sometimes ripple performance.
Reforming is therefore a controlled diagnostic and recovery attempt—not a guarantee of reliability or remaining service life.
Which capacitors can be reformed?
The procedure generally applies to aluminum electrolytic capacitors, especially the wet, high-voltage types found in older power supplies and tube equipment. Multi-section can capacitors may also be tested, but each section should be isolated and evaluated separately where the construction permits.
Reforming is normally not the appropriate procedure for:
- Film capacitors
- Ceramic capacitors
- Mica capacitors
- Paper capacitors
- Most tantalum capacitors
- Any capacitor with a failed seal or visible physical damage
An old capacitor is not automatically a reformable capacitor.
Reform, replace, or stop?
| Condition | Recommended action |
|---|---|
| New, correctly stored modern electrolytic | Follow the manufacturer’s storage and preconditioning instructions. |
| Unused capacitor with an intact seal and no visible damage | Reform cautiously before high-voltage service. |
| Original vintage capacitor with unknown history | Use reforming only as a controlled test; replacement is often the prudent restoration choice. |
| Bulging, leaking, cracked, corroded, split, or vented capacitor | Replace it. Do not attempt to reform it. |
| Leakage steadily declines to the manufacturer’s limit | It may be usable, subject to capacitance, ESR, ripple, and equipment testing. |
| Leakage remains high or rises | Stop and replace the capacitor. |
| Capacitor becomes hot, hisses, bubbles, or vents | Disconnect immediately and dispose of it safely. |
Reforming cannot restore a failed seal, dried electrolyte, corroded foil, poor ESR, reduced mechanical integrity, or a capacitor that has developed an internal short. Storage and shelf-life guidance also varies with the capacitor series, storage conditions, and manufacturer instructions. There is no universal rule that every capacitor stored beyond a particular number of years must be reformed.
Why direct power-up can damage vintage equipment
Applying mains power to an untouched vintage chassis can turn a bad capacitor into a much larger repair. The equipment may contain:
- A shorted or very leaky filter capacitor
- A damaged rectifier
- A power transformer vulnerable to overload
- A failed bleeder resistor
- Brittle wiring or deteriorated insulation
- Incorrect assumptions about the original line voltage
- A chassis connected directly to the mains
- Several electrolytic sections sharing one circuit
A slowly raised input voltage may reduce some inrush stress, but it does not make the chassis safe, identify capacitor leakage, or protect every component from a fault.

Variac, dim-bulb tester, and DC reformer are different tools
Variac
A Variac is a variable autotransformer. It changes AC voltage but does not provide galvanic isolation. The DC voltage across a filter capacitor depends on the rectifier, load, and circuit design, so it may not track the Variac setting linearly.
A Variac is not an adequate reforming instrument by itself because it does not directly measure the capacitor’s leakage current. The Harvard electrolytic-capacitor notes and repair guidance on Variac use both illustrate why gradual voltage application must not be confused with current-monitored capacitor testing.
Dim-bulb tester
A dim-bulb tester puts an incandescent lamp in series with the AC supply. Its changing brightness gives a useful indication of excessive current, and the lamp provides a degree of current limiting during first power-up. It is valuable for fault protection, but it is not a precision reformer and cannot establish whether an individual capacitor meets a leakage-current specification.
Dedicated DC reformer
A dedicated reformer, or a properly designed variable DC supply with current limiting, applies DC directly across an individual capacitor. It lets you measure the actual capacitor voltage and leakage current, which makes it the most direct approach for a serious reforming test.
Safety comes before the procedure
- Work on a dry, uncluttered bench.
- Use an enclosed supply, appropriately rated fuse, insulated leads, and meters rated for the voltage and category.
- Do not use a solderless breadboard for hundreds of volts.
- Use one hand where practical when probing an energized circuit, keeping the other away from the work.
- Confirm polarity before applying power.
- Provide a properly rated discharge resistor; never rely on a screwdriver short.
- After switching off, discharge the capacitor and verify the voltage with a meter before touching it.
- Never leave an energized reforming setup unattended.
- Use eye protection and keep appropriate fire protection available.
A Variac alone does not isolate a mains-connected chassis. An isolation transformer may be required for equipment work, but it does not remove the need for current limiting, fusing, safe measurement, and discharge.
A conservative individual-capacitor reforming procedure
1. Identify the capacitor
Record its capacitance, rated working voltage, polarity, temperature rating, number of sections, date code if available, and manufacturer or series. If the voltage rating is unknown, do not guess.

- 【Large LCD】Digital multimeter has a LCD display with backlight, easy to read, convenient and fast.
- 【Capacitance】Capacitors below 1000V are automatically discharged, do not burn the meter, and are used safely.
- 【Feature】The circuit of multimeter provides high reliability and durability and is very practical.
2. Inspect it unpowered
Reject the capacitor if you see a domed vent, electrolyte residue, a cracked or dried seal, corrosion, a split case, loose terminals, overheating, or other mechanical damage. These are replacement conditions, not reforming challenges.
3. Remove or isolate it
Disconnect at least one terminal so parallel components cannot distort the leakage reading. For a multi-section can, test each section separately when possible, paying close attention to the can’s grounding arrangement.
4. Build a current-limited DC circuit
DC supply positive ── current-limiting resistor ── capacitor positive
DC supply negative ─────────────────────────────── capacitor negative
Ammeter: in series with the capacitor
Voltmeter: directly across the capacitor
The supply, resistor, meter, leads, clips, enclosure, and discharge path must all be rated for the capacitor’s maximum voltage.
For a simple resistor, estimate the worst-case current and dissipation as follows:
Imax = V / R
P = V² / R
At 450 V, a resistor must withstand substantial voltage and heat. Use suitable voltage-rated resistors, provide a safety margin, and expect the resistor to become warm. A component adequate at 50 V may be unsafe at 450 V.

6. Raise voltage gradually
The following is a conservative example, not a universal manufacturer-approved schedule:

| Stage | Approximate voltage | Proceed when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 10% of rated voltage | Leakage begins declining and remains stable. |
| 2 | 25% | Leakage stabilizes. |
| 3 | 50% | Leakage is clearly lower and temperature remains normal. |
| 4 | 75% | Leakage approaches the expected range. |
| 5 | 90% | Leakage remains stable. |
| 6 | 100% | Final leakage test passes, or the capacitor is rejected. |
For a 450 V capacitor, those stages are approximately 45, 113, 225, 338, 405, and 450 V. Hold times may range from tens of minutes to an hour or more at each stage; a capacitor stored for many years may require several hours. The deciding factor is stable, declining leakage—not an arbitrary timer.
7. Record the important readings
At each stage, record capacitor voltage, leakage current, elapsed time, capacitor temperature, resistor temperature, and any odor, noise, bubbling, or venting.
Initial current may be relatively high. During successful reforming, leakage generally declines, the capacitor voltage rises as less voltage is lost across the series resistor, and the capacitor remains near ambient or only mildly warm.
8. Stop immediately when symptoms worsen
- Leakage rises instead of falling.
- Current remains abnormally high without improvement.
- The capacitor becomes hot.
- The case bulges, hisses, bubbles, leaks, or vents.
- The supply cannot control the current.
- Voltage across the capacitor fails to rise as expected.
- A resistor, lead, or connection overheats.
Switch off, allow the discharge path to work, and verify the capacitor voltage before investigating.
9. Discharge and perform final tests
After stable operation at the intended voltage, switch off the supply and leave the capacitor connected to its rated discharge path. Verify with a meter that the voltage has fallen to a safe level. Then measure capacitance and ESR where meaningful, and compare leakage with the original manufacturer’s specification. Recheck behavior after the capacitor has rested, because leakage can change after power is removed.
How to interpret leakage-current limits
The original datasheet is the authority. Modern aluminum-electrolytic datasheets often specify leakage with a capacitance-and-voltage-dependent expression, but the coefficient, temperature, test voltage, and test time vary by manufacturer and series.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA commonly encountered illustrative form is:
Ileakage = 0.01 × C × V
Here, C is capacitance in microfarads and V is rated voltage; the result is in microamps under the applicable test conditions. For a 47 µF, 450 V capacitor, this expression gives approximately 212 µA. That number is not a universal pass/fail limit for every vintage capacitor. Do not apply a modern series specification blindly to an irreplaceable old component.

Capacitance, ESR, and leakage test different things
- Capacitance: Can reveal a grossly open, shorted, or severely degraded part, but does not prove safe operation at rated voltage.
- ESR: Can reveal excessive internal resistance, but an ESR meter normally uses a low-voltage AC signal. It cannot substitute for a high-voltage leakage test.
- Leakage: Must be measured at an appropriate DC voltage through a current-limited source. It is the central measurement for reforming.
In-circuit ESR measurements can be distorted by parallel capacitors, transformers, inductors, semiconductor junctions, resistors, and other circuit paths. Always discharge the equipment first.
Reforming a capacitor while it is installed
Installed-capacitor reforming is less controlled because the rectifier, transformer, load, bleeder resistors, and other electrolytic sections affect the readings. For a valuable or irreplaceable unit, testing or replacing the electrolytics separately is usually the better approach.
If an experienced technician performs a cautious first power-up, the sequence may include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Inspecting and repairing obvious faults before energizing.
- Disconnecting or removing the rectifier where appropriate.
- Using suitable isolation and current limiting.
- Monitoring line current and the relevant DC rail.
- Raising voltage only while continuously observing the equipment.
- Stopping immediately if current, temperature, odor, or voltage behavior is abnormal.
A tube rectifier may not conduct until a relatively high input voltage is reached, so a low Variac setting does not necessarily mean the capacitor is receiving a proportionally low DC voltage. An installed capacitor that appears to survive a dim-bulb or Variac startup still has not passed an individual leakage test.
When replacement is the better protection
Replacement is normally the correct answer when the capacitor is physically damaged, persistently high-leakage, internally shorted, hot, or located in a high-stress power-supply, mains-filter, high-temperature, or high-ripple position. It is also often the sensible choice for an original electrolytic with unknown history when reliability matters more than preserving the part.
A modern replacement can be installed directly where appropriate. If historical appearance matters, restorers sometimes restuff the original can with modern components while retaining the original exterior. That is a restoration preference, not evidence that the old electrical element remains trustworthy.
Choosing test equipment without overspending
Minimum viable setup
For lower-voltage capacitors, a properly isolated, current-limited DC bench supply, suitable high-voltage resistor, rated meter, insulated leads, and discharge resistor may be sufficient. Many ordinary 30–60 V hobby supplies cannot test 250–500 V tube-era filter capacitors.

Useful additions
An ESR meter can help find bad capacitors after discharge, but it is not a reformer. For example, the B&K Precision Model 881 is an in-circuit ESR tester using a low-voltage test signal; its manufacturer-listed price signal was $293 as observed July 29, 2026. The Capacitor Wizard CAP1B is another in-circuit ESR option, listed at $239.95 as observed August 16, 2026. Prices and availability change.
A properly built dim-bulb tester is useful for first power-up; one listing observed August 16, 2026 showed $74.99. Treat it as a current limiter and fault indicator, not as a precision leakage tester.
Professional equipment
For repeated high-voltage work, a purpose-built leakage/reforming instrument can provide controlled DC, current measurement, timing, discharge, and pass/fail functions. The Chroma 11200 Capacitor Leakage Current/IR Meter is specified in 650 V and 800 V versions, with leakage measurement down to approximately 0.001 µA and up to 20 mA. The manufacturer page does not publish a retail price; a third-party listing observed $2,585, which should not be treated as an official manufacturer price.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting readings and symptoms
| Symptom | Likely interpretation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate high current | Shorted capacitor, reversed polarity, wrong wiring, or insufficient resistance | Switch off; verify polarity and wiring. Do not simply increase the resistor without recalculating ratings. |
| Current falls slowly | Possible reforming behavior | Hold at that voltage and continue monitoring. |
| Current stops falling | Permanent degradation or an unsuitable test voltage | Stop or hold only under controlled conditions; compare with the datasheet. |
| Current rises | Dielectric failure, heating, or breakdown | Disconnect and reject. |
| Capacitor gets hot | Excessive internal power dissipation | Disconnect immediately. |
| Capacitor voltage stays low | Leakage is consuming the supply voltage or the supply is current-limiting | Measure voltage across both the capacitor and series resistor. |
| Normal capacitance but high leakage | Dielectric or seal problem | Replace. |
| Low ESR but high leakage | The ESR test did not evaluate the failure mode | Perform a proper leakage test or replace. |
| Voltage remains after shutdown | Missing or defective bleeder/discharge path | Discharge through a rated resistor and verify with a meter. |
