B&Q announced B&Q Spaces on 15 October 2014, an online planning and design application for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. It was intended to let customers create a preliminary design, save it, revisit it from home and share it with family, friends or tradespeople—reducing reliance on long showroom appointments without removing the need for professional planning and technical checks.

The original launch was an early example of an omnichannel home-improvement journey: customers could begin online, obtain help in store and eventually move towards products, quotations and installation. B&Q’s current offering uses different terminology, but continues that general model through an online design tool, planning appointments, itemised quotations and installation services.

What B&Q Spaces was

B&Q Spaces was presented as a customer-facing web application for planning kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. It was more than an inspiration gallery: customers were expected to build a room design online, save it for later editing and use it in conversations with B&Q colleagues or their own tradespeople.

B&Q said the system was due to roll out in stores in the weeks following the October 2014 announcement. The retailer described it as a way to give customers greater control over the early design stage while allowing ordinary store colleagues to help with the tool, rather than requiring every colleague to be a specialist kitchen designer.

Computer Weekly’s contemporaneous report records the launch rationale and the features announced at the time.

Why B&Q wanted to change kitchen planning

Fitted-kitchen purchases are rarely linear. Customers research online, visit stores, consult family members, speak to tradespeople, change their minds and often take months before committing. The traditional showroom process could also involve specialist appointments lasting two hours or more.

B&Q said its digital workflow could reduce the need for scarce specialist-designer appointments and shorten some appointments to approximately 20 minutes. That figure was a 2014 B&Q expectation, not a measured or guaranteed duration for current appointments.

The more important change was organisational. B&Q was trying to align its website, stores and customer records so that online activity supported store sales rather than competing with them. A customer could start the design independently, ask for help in a store and continue refining the project later.

Features announced in 2014

  • Create designs for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms online.
  • Save a project and return to edit it later.
  • Share designs with friends and family.
  • Share through Pinterest, Facebook and email.
  • Invite a tradesperson into the discussion.
  • Use store colleagues for assistance with the digital planning process.

The available launch reporting supports sharing and collaboration around designs. It does not establish that B&Q Spaces offered real-time multiplayer editing, automatic building-regulation checks or professional CAD/BIM output.

What is available from B&Q now?

As of the August 2026 information available for this article, B&Q’s current pages refer to a B&Q design tool rather than clearly confirming that the original B&Q Spaces interface remains live. Legacy references may lead to old Spaces or 2020 Spaces pages, so readers should not assume that a historic Spaces link is the current service.

B&Q currently describes its online tool as free and capable of producing a colour 3D room design. Users can experiment with products, themes, positions, paint, lighting, flooring and wallcoverings, then save a project and use it as the basis for an appointment. B&Q’s help information indicates that an online account is needed to save designs, although login requirements and interface labels can change.

The retailer also advertises free online and in-store planning appointments. B&Q says its advisors can create a professional 3D design, provide a written itemised quote and discuss finance and installation options. The planning page refers to appointments through approximately 300 stores.

The current planning-to-installation journey

  1. Open the online design tool or book a planning appointment.
  2. Explore layouts, products, colours and finishes.
  3. Save the project to the customer account, if you want to revisit it.
  4. Book an online or in-store appointment when professional input is needed.
  5. Review the resulting 3D design and itemised quotation.
  6. Discuss finance and installation options where relevant.
  7. If proceeding with installation, allow the project to move through installer matching, a site survey and a final installation quote.

B&Q’s installation service describes a process involving approved installers, a survey and coordination. B&Q says installers are vetted and DBS checked and advertises a two-year guarantee subject to its terms and conditions. Installation is separate from the free design tool and free planning appointment.

What an online planner cannot guarantee

A visual design is a useful starting point, but it is not a substitute for a measured survey or technical validation. A room can look correct on screen while failing to account for:

  • actual wall and floor dimensions, uneven surfaces and plaster or skirting thickness;
  • doors, windows, radiators and structural obstructions;
  • pipes, waste outlets, gas points and electrical supplies;
  • ventilation and appliance clearances;
  • cabinet compatibility, fillers, service voids and worktop overhangs;
  • plumbing, electrical, gas, building or structural requirements.

Before ordering, customers should obtain a professional confirmation of the layout, a dated itemised quote and clarity about exclusions. Depending on the project, the quote may treat appliances, worktops, sinks, taps, delivery, removal of the old kitchen, flooring, decorating, preparation work, plumbing, electrical work and installation as separate items.

Stock, colours and product ranges can also change after a design is created. A saved plan should therefore be treated as a design record, not proof that every displayed product remains available at the same price.

Who the tool suits

  • Early-stage planners: people exploring styles and layouts before committing to a supplier.
  • B&Q customers: people who want to work with B&Q-compatible products and move naturally towards a B&Q quote.
  • Households planning together: family members who need to review ideas remotely.
  • Customers preparing for an appointment: users who want to arrive with a clearer brief and preferred finishes.

When another approach may be better

B&Q’s tool is less suitable for customers who need a retailer-neutral design to quote with several suppliers, advanced professional CAD output or detailed technical drawings for a contractor. Rooms involving major structural, gas, plumbing or electrical changes should be developed with the relevant qualified professionals.

Alternatives include retailer-specific planners from IKEA, Wickes, Wren Kitchens and Howdens, as well as independent room-planning software. Their current prices, account rules, export formats and installation models should be checked directly before relying on them for a project.

Practical safeguards

  • Record room measurements separately from the online project.
  • Save screenshots or a PDF record where possible; do not rely on one cloud design as the only copy.
  • Use the same email address when returning to a saved project.
  • Ask which products, services and preparation works are included in the quote.
  • Confirm availability and prices before ordering.
  • Do not treat a visual layout as confirmation that the room is ready for installation.

The 2014 announcement matters because it showed a major retailer moving kitchen design away from a store-first process and towards a customer-led digital workflow. In 2026, the underlying idea remains visible, but the safe interpretation is not that software replaces designers, surveyors or installers. It helps customers explore and communicate a project; professional planning and site validation still determine whether that project can be built.
